I can hardly belief it. The man who was stalkinge me was none othre than Lt. Remiel Quillan! The same man who, notte so longe ago, held me in chains for nigh a monthe! I was surprissed that he came aftre me… I did notte expect that. I also didn’t expect his peaseful intenchins. We had a brief talke in one of the rooms. I think he sees thinges from my point of view. Maybe…
Aeron was hurt badly by the Black Beast. The cut in his shulder, it went thru one of the veins. I did my best with whiskey, magots, and bandages. He is notte happy with me right now.
I think I owe Rem a little gift… just becase he tries hard to be a goode man.

I don’t understand it. Mal and I have met several times now since the Shindig and, amazingly, the meetings have all been perfectly cordial. Well, mostly. He enjoys embarrassing me and making me blush, but he seems to harbor no ill-will towards me at all despite the war. I asked him about it and he merely shrugged, saying that the war was over and there was no use holding it against me. I keep reminding myself to ask him about his escape from prison---and subsequent survival in the cold winter----but every time we meet, he does something so unexpected that I forget about everything else.
This time… this time, he gave me a gift. He appeared in front of my house, Aeron in tow, with a box under one arm. As it turned out, the box contained one small silver gryphon chick. Mal refuses to say how he acquired the chick, and continually professes that it was through entirely legal means. Most importantly, though, the chick was for me. I named him Taliesin, a name I heard a few times during the war. Tali is, above all other things, very sweet and affectionate towards everyone. In truth, Laura is his main caretaker since she knows more about gryphon babies than I do, but he seems to like me just fine anyway. He follows me from room to room on occasion. The dogs seem to like him as well, although the cats are a tad leery of him, which is probably a good thing; he chases them, if given half a chance.
I just don’t understand why Mal got me this gift. Gryphons aren’t cheap, after all… still, we are from the same world.
Excerpt from Old War Journal Prison: Day Twenty-Nine It is a sad day, in a way. Although we finally got to leave the prison today, there was a blizzard for the past two days. There is no way that Malcolm Lansing could have survived, we believe. It’s sort of depressing, really. He had survived the war, survived being snowed in for several weeks with his men to look after, has survived prison… only to be brought down by a blizzard. Nature cannot be tamed. Neither could Lansing. I suppose what I’m trying to say is that it’s poignant that he would be defeated by the one thing that he admired most, freedom itself. If he had stayed here, within his cell, he would have survived. He wouldn’t have been freed of course, at least not until being reconstructed as a member of society, but at least he would be alive. He preferred to die at the icy hands and fingers of winter than live like that, live like a slave. Goodbye, Sergeant Malcolm Lansing. The world will never see your like again, and I’m still trying to decide if that is a good or bad thing.
