The moon and stars fought to shine down upon the forests that evening as the greyish masses of cloud overhead passed through the inky black sky. A wind whistled lightly through the trees, adding to the potential eeriness of the forested setting, perhaps making it a bit spooky for anyone who might have happened to be wandering about after dark. And someone was. The young wolf shuddered lightly as he drifted through the familiar territory, though the familiarity still didn't keep him from feeling a bit nervous. He didn't like it so much when the forest didn't have the extra light from the moon, even though his canine senses did fine to guide him through the dark.

Rory hadn't always been prone to late evenings walks after the sun had set, but lately things had been turning increasingly...unusual, for the adolescent canine. It wasn't something he could put his paw on exactly, and he hadn't really told anyone yet. He'd become jumpy, more anxious in the recently past weeks...it felt often to him as if he were being watched, both when he was very clearly alone, and when he was with others. Not to mention the little noises he'd hear every once in a while, ones that no one else seemed to notice or pick up. He sighed heavily, and continued along, rather glad when the sound of running water reached his ears. A good cool drink might be nice, and he was too troubled to go back and try to sleep. He had left that familiar territory, he noticed all at once, but he wasn't overly worried. He wasn't hurting anyone, afterall, and would return soon enough. He slunk along on his path through the brush, heading for the sound of water source his pointed ears had picked up.

Rio was on a midnight wander... the pups and his mate for once were all asleep at the same time, and he'd felt the urge to get out and take a walk.

The "maned" wolf watched his breath curl into white tendrils of fog as the chill of the air bit at the skin under his pelt, but his winter-coat kept most of the cold from his bones. A black strip of fabric hung and tied securely from his forehead, doing little, but much at the same time to hold back the blonde wisps of fur in his eyes. Everything about Rio was odd, some days even the way he walked, skipping or hopping about with a perk to his step. Tonight he crept along silently, however.

He was looking for someone.

The brook urged him on in her usual excited manner, and Rio continued his path up the stream and further into the East. He knew from Phib and the tell-tale signs themselves that another pack resided on the other side of the creek and forest, but he'd never been into those lands. Now it seemed he was destined to meet someone from there, or so the water insisted.

One comes this way...

The lake had whispered into his dreams, and now, as he traveled along the shore of the stream?

He draws near, one like yourself! Hurry, Rio, hurry! Hasten your step!

"Si si... Oi, I doubt that he's going to take off running if he came all this way at this time of night..." Rio reassured in his hushed accented tone, with his "funny words".

The scent of the salt-water left the wolves residing here with a stronger sense of smell, having to learn to smell over the scent of the ocean. He knew Rory was coming long before he saw him, and most likely it was the other way around as well.

Rory took a deep breath, relishing the refreshing scent of the stream nearby, then hesitating a bit as he picked up a new smell. It reminded him vaguely of the stream, or lake, but it was a good deal saltier, and he knew at once that another wolf was nearby. It made him all the more apprehensive, but he pushed on, thinking perhaps that he'd be left alone.

Pressing his way through the brush, he finally came to the stream, and looked about nervously, his ears perked up. He could hear movement, but was unable to see anyone yet, and he hoped no one would be cross at him for trespassing.

The young wolf was about to bend his head down when he heard a short myriad of harsh whispers that caused him to freeze, the fur along his spine rising stiffly. "Who...who's there!?" he asked quickly, in a loud whisper, glaring into the dark. His heart was pounding, and he swallowed hard.

He knew he would receive no answer, at least, not from whatever he'd heard. It was both frightening and frustrating to the young wolf, and he leaned down finally to drink, his ears perked, trying to keep watch for the wolf he'd heard a few moments before.
