Odd yawned as he came quietly into HQ, looking around. Bags hung beneath a pair of tired eyes under his skull. Each step was careful and slow, as though if he were too casual he would fall. His fur was matted where it shouldn't have been, and his body was slightly thinner. He constantly felt exhausted, but he had come to accept that he had put himself in this prediciment. Odd slumped over at the foot of a chair, too tired to make the effort to climb up. He sighed and looked around: no one was there. He decided he'd wait for some company, and in the meantime, think. He didn't mind isolation too much any more.

He didn't feel...himself. How could a bouncy youth such as his produced something so...? He stood and put his paws up on the window sill, and with some effort pulled his head up to look at his reflection. Something so dreadful, he thought glumly, and crawled back to his spot. He rested his head on his paws, shutting his eyes.

Odd wondered how Essence was...He raised his head and cracked open his eyes, looking around. He hadn't seen her since...their little incident. She had said she had loved him, and he could have sworn that in the deepest part of his heart he loved her back...He rolled onto his back and thought hard. How did he feel now? Did he still love her, and did she still love him...? After finding the note in blood, he had gone off for a while...

Scared mum half to death... he thought with a soft laugh. It soon faded though, for he was weak and it was hard to produce much sound. He cleared his throat and continued thinking. Could she still love him, after what he had done to her? He wasn't sure...He didn't expect to see her around. What could he do, then?

...Wait. He would wait for her, there at HQ. He didn't feel hungry, so there was no need to eat. He was tired, but he could by all means sleep there on the floor. Yes, wait, that's what he'd do. Wait for her to come back. He'd wait forever, if he had to...Was that love? He groaned and covered his face with his paws. He didn't know.

Odd raised his head, cracking open his eyes. He blinked up at her for a moment, distantly and almost unknowingly. The faint trace of a smile hovered about his lips. "You," he said, getting to his feet. He glanced down at himself for a moment, with a feeling of, Oh. He realized for the second time that he was not in the best of appearances. Nevertheless, he kept wearing the same slight smile.

"Hey, Essence," he said. It was sounded very unfamiliar to his mouth, his tongue shaping around the old words. How casually he had said it in the past, and yet how...odd it felt to say it now. How strange. How very strange.

He looked her up and down, noticing the changes...Changes not for the better. Ah well. He couldn't exactly win a pageant himself. "You look...lovely," he said, with a tired smile. He wasn't going to lie to her. Besides, after all this time, there was bound to be formality. Sure, formality.

Then again, she might actually look beautiful to him, after all this time...

((Not the longest, snazziest post, but deal. xp ))

He raised a brow slightly at the sour tone to her voice. "I do not patronize you. However, you're right, and I don't deserve to defend myself. I deserve every word," he said, supporting her argument. He sighed, and swallowed, and with some difficulty.

"I wasn't there for you when I said I would be. I promised I would be, and I wasn't, and there's not much that I can say to you, Essence. The only thing that I can say is that I'm sorry...Truly, I am," he said, and his lowered tone gave evidence to his sincerity. He had gone away, he had been selfish, and he had suffered himself and those around him...

"I regret what I did, and if I was able to turn back time, I would set things right. However, this is not possible. The only thing I can offer you is my apology, and I can assure you it comes straight from my heart." His eyes had lost their youthful glint, and he did indeed look to be in a sorry state. He paused, glancing to the side and taking a breath.

"I...I assume that you hate me...And you have every right to do so..." His voice was shakier now, less rehearsed, and more from Odd. "But...I have to confess...Every day that I was away from home, I thought about you. When I wandered the forest foraging, I thought of you...When I needed extra strength to get myself to shelter, I thought of you...And when I was alone at night, contemplating my own cowardice...I...I thought of you. Essence...I am sorry. I see now what you saw all along...I love you. I've loved you every day since I met you, and I should have believed it. But I have lost my chance. Say what you will to me. I deserve every word." He bowed his head with his final word, his eyes shining. Tears...? No, he had none left. He had cried them all out. All he had now was sorrow and regret.

Odd raised an eyebrow. "Before you, no, I didn't know of love. However, I do know of pain, and from what I hear, it sounds like there's been a lot of that in your life," he said. He sat down in front of her, keeping the gaze without falter. "I told you I would accept these blows, and I will, but I do have one question..."

He paused, for what seemed an age. She said she did not love him, that what he had done had driven her insane. Was she still that way...? She was not the Essence he had known. Then again, he was not that Odd that she knew. Both had lost their spirit. But there was a question that still lingered on his mind.

"If you do hate me, if you do blame me for everything that happened, and rightfully so...why are you here?" he said. Why was she? He would have waited until he withered and faded away, not expecting her to come, and yet she came? What was he to do but ask? Why had she come, why did she still talk to him...? If it hurt so much, then why did she do it?

Odd watched the scene with utter horror. This is what he had reduced her to...? And she still said that she loved him...? He shut his eyes momentarily, and when she collapsed, he moved forward. "Essence..." he said quietly, turning around and laying down next to her. He moved his paw over to hers, blood smearing under his paw. He smiled slightly, sadly, and gazed towards her unmasked eyes.

"Essence...I love you too...and I'm sorry..." he whispered, and sighed. Odd swallowed hard; she still loved him. She had said to him herself that she would rather die than love him again, and yet she had said it to him...She shared his feeling. He should have been overjoyed that she might give him anoither chance, should have told her how happy it made him...But seeing how much pain it put her through to say those four words hurt him. He looked back up, smiling as best he could.

"I wasn't lying when I said you looked beautiful," he said. It was the only thing he could think of to say to her. What else could he say? There were no words for the amount of pain and anguish he had put her through. What could he say? To him, she was always beautiful...always had, always would...
