Traditionally, the sun is basically seen as the ego or conscious self, and the ascendant as how you appear to other people, right?

I was reading an astrology book the other day (Parkers') and there was something interesting in it - the authors suggested that, because there is a general awareness of sun signs and so people have a vague idea at least of what they're supposed to be like, the sun is more what we come across as (due to subconsciously 'acting the part?') and the ascendant is more of what we really are - so the roles are kind of reversed.

What do people think about this? I understand where they're coming from, but if astrology is something real, it doesn't seem right to just swap around the roles of different features of a chart that way. At most, it seems to me that awareness of one's sun sign could weaken the role of the ascendant - but I could be wrong.

Opinions?

personally I prefer to keep my sun sign as a bit more influential than my rising. My rising sign seems more fitting as the way people see me rather than my ego or conscience self.

My sun is pisces and my ascendant is virgo (Polar opposites, w00t).

While I do carry some virgoan traits, I am a pisces all the way.
I don't really know if people see me in a virgo-colored light. It seems like they do, though.

There are probably many aspects of a chart that will push the rising sign into seeming more dominant than the sun, but I think if the sun sign and the ascendant were to go into a one-on-one combat over who had the most influence, the sun would pwn.
That doesn't happen, though... the sun and the ascendant, along with all the other aspects, are there working together to create a whole personality (along with life experiences and all that). Teamwork- yey.

While awareness of one's sign may influence the way they see themself, it wouldn't really affect the way they act or their emotional reactions.

Some people know the name of their own sign, or maybe some traits here and there, but it doesn't mean they really know any valuable pieces of information.
A lot of people totally act the part of their sign, then say "I think I'm a :sign:, but I have no idea what that means."
I find it hysterical.

So basically, it is my opinion that the author's suggestion isn't a bad one, but I agree with you.
