Due to the fact that sig lengths have been shortened, the information on the swamp rabbit is long gone from my signature. The picture still promises information, though, and I'm not going to slack off!

Back in 1979, few people knew about the amphibious rabbits of Louisiana. The people who lived on the bayou may have seen them often, but the people who lived outside of the state had no idea that such a creature even existed. Tales had floated around in nearby states about the little guy, but it was largely written off as a big joke.

Enter former president Jimmy Carter--he was minding his own business fishing in a small pond on his property when the attack occurred. An angry-seeming rabbit swam at full speed through the reedy water towards the President's boat. The little bunny had full intent to board the boat and Carter reacted by frantically splashing at him in hopes of getting the rabbit to turn tail.

This is a photo of the event--you can't see the rabbit, but you can definitely see Carter splashing at him with an oar! The swamp rabbit was successfully frightened off and fled never to harass another president...yet, anyway.

Cute, isn't he? The little guy feeds on reeds and other aquatic plants, making nests out of them when it's time to give birth to the next generation. They're incredibly fast, clocking in at over 40 MPH! They're also skilled swimmers and capable of crossing any body of water in its environment. When in danger they hide in shallow waters with their noses above the water, much like an alligator.

I hope you enjoyed this information installment!

That's an awesome litle rabbit, very different to our European Bunnies! They don't like to get wet and at the first sign of rain they hot-foot it back into their warrens.
Are they a communal species or solitary?

American bunnies are way different in general from European ones, the desert ones where I grew up were half the size of Europeans. Pets are bred from Euros and I know mine much bigger than the wild desert ones, and they were mini breeds!

I think the swamp rabbit is solitary, that's just a guess though. I can't find any information on it one way or another. I'm guessing swamp ground isn't conducive to warren-building.

My, what an amazing and adorable little bunny. I had never heard of an "amphibious" rabbit before this thread! Thanks for the information on another fascinating creature, Auf!

This is so amazing!! So what parts of the world can you find these rabbits wild?

I've heard that they're incredibly common in Louisiana, but they're probably in other southern states too. I'm guessing the Florida Everglades and the area around Savannah, Georgia. I know for a fact it's in Louisiana but I'm not sure about the others.

You know, I haven't been able to find the exact location. I'm pretty sure that anywhere there's a bayou there'll be swamp rabbits. They're fairly secretive little animals, though.
