I use an existing background and put it under the drawings and then trace

What kind of backgrounds? If it's buildings or rooms or something, you should probably learn about perspective.. if the perspective is off, it won't look right. :3 I think we have a tutorial or two on that subject, or else there'll be a ton of informative sites about it that you can find on Google. Also, learning to draw a lot of different materials/objects would help a ton. Like fabric, wood, metal, plants, etc... because that's what's in the world.
If it's something like.. forests and clouds and outdoor scenery and stuff, then I guess the best thing to do would be to go outside and draw those things, or at least look at a lot of photos. Anime BGs aren't really different from real life ones, even though you may outline them in black, or stylize them to look nicer than they usually would or something.
