Aleu smirked as the flick of a wrist caused yet another woman to grant him not one, but two glances. Ah, life was good for the mercenary for hire. Work was booming with people wanting inheritances or rare gifts given over the holidays. Or perhaps it was simply that people used the gift money all at once to get who they needed out of the way. To the onyx haired mage it ment little more than a steady income. A nice fat purse too.
Adrule purred happily against his keeper. The bombay had earlier been situated in the man's arms to avoid letting the delicate pads face frostbite. Certainly the spoiled feline was not to be left with such a horrid task to complete as walking in the chill. Nay, Aleu had refused to leave the house without the cat, and so had carried him along. Soon the onyx creature would have to spend a moment on the ground though. They were almost there afterall... A meeting between two 'crooks' as his client called them. Two no good crooks who needed to die.
Well Aleu was an exterminator, an expensive one, but a good one.
Little did he know that somewhere, a spirit watched him. She was thin and pale with flowing white blonde hair and eyes of purest crystal or so they seemed. She stared into the pool before her, the image of the mercinary having appeared when a leaf had fallen fom the magic tree beside her. The tree's magic was to show her the guardians of her home's reborn gods when they became ready to take on the child. Well not ready necessarily as they would have no inklination as to what was about to befall them but more the time was right for them to take this charge.
Waving a hand the oracle summoned some of her waning power. Each person she "killed" to bring into contact with the world of the dead gods would cost her more of her eternal life energy. But the former goddess had faith that once Tisons gods had been reborn she wouldn't be needed any longer. Gently she took a hold of what was the reality for this young man-and altered it, causing a twist of fate that would kill him.
Golden eyes that glowed almost as eerily as the feline's watched the world around him in the hesitant way they alwasy did. Careful of each odd shadow. Anything could be the death of you if you weren't wary. Though his trick was a bit above that... Two sets of eye's were better than one. The feline too listened carefully as it watched the area. The pair seeming as almost a casual set moving toward a home in the late of night. A pet and it's owner. Simple enough.
Even in the back alley's it wasn't too odd. Unless you caught sight of the masked object onhis back. Illusions were wrapped tightly to make the thing seem invisable, though careful watch would show the slight odd appearance the area had. It just didn't move quite right. Which was what the twist decided to toy with. For Aleu knew not that the magic ripped apart the barriers upon the object, nor of the fact with it so had the barrier he kept up for self defense. A simple thing that might deflect a rare ambush of an arrow. One which could prove deadly.
The mage had utter confidence in his crafted shield from earlier, thus even as spotted the sniper above he decided to give them a smirk rather than send heaven's wrath down upon them right away. They'd fry in a momen- the thought never finished as two bullets range out ripping through where the barrier should have been as if it was nothing. For that was what it was. One catching and burrying itself deeply in the man's heart. The second ripping open the feline's skull. What a bloody mess this was.
But bloody as it may have been there was no pain involved. The only feeling the mage and his pet experienced instead of the bullets or the fall to the ground, was the feeling of lying flat on one's back and floating. Not that he'd been in water when he'd been shot. If he'd have felt anything it'd be a sidewalk. And the cat...was now on his stomach. Which would probably confuse the cat just as much.
However the oddest would come when they opened their eyes. For as soon as they did the sound and feeling would solidify. The sound of heavy traffic driving by would be heard-honking horns, the tires on the road, the metal parts of the cars and trucks, all sorts of things. And the feelings would be there too. Vibrations from the moving vehicles going away from them and coming towards them and going past them both ways. The feeling of the road would be there too. Hard it was, the weight of their bodies, the texture. It was as if the moment they opened their eyes they'd stop being in the strange limbo they were currently floating it. They'd have become real once again.
Well ********. That was what crossed Aleu's mind as he watched the bullet rip through the air that should have repelled it. Then nothing. A moment later a loud humm reached his ear. One sun hued eye opened to watch a semi-thunder past. "HOLY SH-" The man started to slink back a step only to feel wind rush past it as another car thundered past on that side. Slowly he turned his head to stare at the area in dismay. Then inched more towards the center ********, ********, ******** ********. One more ******** for good measure.
Then realization hit and he searched the road for something that hopefully wouldn't be roadkill. Ah there he was. Looking like he'd be drugged up with enough morphine to kill im, but alive. "Adrule..." The cat turned it's head up at the sound of it's name almost seeming like a trained showcat as it quickly pranced over to it's owner. Though he wasn't happy. His tail drug and ears lay flat back against his head. This place sucked. "Yea, I know buddy. We'll nuke them, get out of here, and figure out what the hell is going on."
"I don't believe you can nuke something that's not really there." came the voice of a woman from the center of the road, just ahead of them. Her voice was calm, unwavering and didn't even show a trace of interest that she was in fact, in the middle of a BUSY HIGHWAY!
And she didn't look it either, when one turned to see her. A young woman with long cherry red hair done in a rather odd style-it might have even been called a mullethawk- was sitting at behind a coffee table as if nothing were wrong in the world. Her face showed no obvious expression and her actions were calm and precise. She was sitting on a small cushion-one could deduce that as there was a matching cushion on the nearer side-and pouring what looked like coffee but smelled like warm tea, from a small porciline pot. On the table before her was a plate of what looked like brownies...or chocolate chocolate mini muffins. Though they had a cream filled center-there was one open on her plate which made that visible. What the hell was going on?
Rather than admitting his fault the mage simply smirked. "Watch me, magic has more uses than you'd imagine." Though he didn't actually go through it it. Instead the man simply knelt down and plucked up the feline who's eyes would not leave the woman. Both held a momentary cool stare at her before giving up on it. "And if it is not truly there, what would keep me from walking out of here?" The problem was solved anyway.
If anything it meant the road no longer frightened the man. Why be afraid of something that obviously could cause you no harm.
And for the record. That woman needed some serious hair help. Her sense of style seriously grated against him. Aside from that she wasn't too hard on the eyes, but the style. He wasn't even going to touch it. It was probably for the better. Getting involved with psycho ghost chicks couldn't be good for him.
"You're correct. Magic has more uses then you'd imagine as well. That's what's keeping you here. A man cannot deny the will of a goddess when his magic is not as strong as her's. And it is a goddess much stronger then you that has brought you here and you shall have to listen to me should you want to leave." the woman said, tone not changing once. The hand not on the pot gestured to the cushion before her. "It'd suit your interests. After all, were you to leave here, you'd be dead and trapped rather far from where you are used to. And I highly doubt that you would like that now would you, Aleu?" For a split second large blue eyes met his. They had something mysterious about them-something not quite there. "You and Adrule will have better lucky listening to me then trying to leave anyway."
...oh yea. He hated her. She was a b***h. Why? He had to listen to her. Simple reason.
Aleu hated not being the boss. Adrule was the same. Two men who liked being the center of everything. Thus when this woman decided to say they HAD to listen to get out of here, a grimace crosse the man's face. The feline's eyes simply narrowed in turn as the man slumped onto the cushion, frowning at the creature before him. "Alright miss know it all." The tone wasn't amused anymore. He had a feeling this goddess, because he knew god's had sick senses of humor or thought it anyway, probably had something to do with fouling his own magic earlier. "Speak up while I'm listening then. Cause I don't want to sit here forever."
"Good. I won't tell you everything as you're an a** and wouldn't listen to it all anyway. I will tell you what you need to know and you may go on as you please." she said calmly. He did not know that she was not the goddess, nor did he have to. "And that is that there is another universe, apart from your own, that is in peril. It's gods were destroyed-most of them anyway- and it they need to be reborn to save it. People from your world were destined to care for, raise and protect these reborn gods. The goddess nor the guardians nor the reborn gods have a choice in this matter. It was predetermined and it shall be whether they like it or not. I believe your half brain has enough wit left in it to fathom what you have to do with all of this." the woman's tone didn't change, not even for her snide remarks but she was calm.
"Eat." she added. He did not know that this was part of the magic that was keeping him here nor how it would effect his escape. All he knew was that this woman he believed to be a goddess was telling him to do it.
Fingers dug their way into the silky black fur of the animal as he lightly raked them over his back. She was talking. Annoying and talking. This was a combination he hated. Why on earth must he be here? Oh, to be a guardian? Hell no. Kids were a total pain, especially god ones. Not to mention she'd had the nerve to suggest he was stupid. The genious mercinary of magic an idiot. He'd pulled more stunts that proved he was brilliant than could be counted. Gods were total pain in the a** egotistic morons. Why would anyone want to care for one. "I'd answer, but I don't think it matters much you you." He quickly replied as a hand snuck out and snagged a piece of the custard filled thing with disdain.
"I hate sugary s**t." He added holding poking the thing and squeezing it a bit to offer up some of the custard to the cat before popping it in his mouth and grimacing.
"Good for you. You're not supposed to like it. Just eat it." her tone was getting more annoying. Too dead and monotonous. "And I also don't care if you want kids. You shall have one. You have been assigned to be guardian to the reborn deity of Fate. You will recieve a relic that you will not be able to get rid of. And when the time comes you shall meet the goddess and you will get the child. You have no choice in this matter."
She should give him a few more moments to react before she let him leave. The goddess had robbed her of her obvious emotions-her personality-during the assignments but she still could feel and act in ways because of her emotions-whether she could make it obvious or not-and being as she thought this young man was a complete a*****e she didn't feel like being very nice to him. Her daughter would deal better with him. She'd take no lip. And that was a good thing.
He rolled his eyes. "You said I didn't have a choice. Never said I couldn't complain." He replied still stroking the cats form. Fate huh? Sounded useful, and useless at the same time. Fingers kneading into the fur as he listened to the seemingly endless droning. Couldn't get rid of it. Well he'd see about that, but best not to rile up the she-whench. She was done right?
One casual glance in the woman's direction before he glanced down at the feline in his lap. Ah, Adrule was far better company than the gods.
But Oracle was one to love interfering. She did not want to prolong this encounter between the woman and the guardian. He would see plenty of Kendra on the ship. So it was time to let him meet his...fate as it were.
Kendra's face suddenly went from monotonous to dark. "It is time you woke up. Until we meet again." and those words had barely left her mouth when the truck-it had been veering the whole time but yet it was impossible to see before- flew through the now intagible woman and table to hit the mage and his cat. Yet again no pain was felt. But instead the man was in a bed and suddenly sat bolt upright, the cat on his lap waking as well. And before them stood a young woman-taller and wider looking then the redhead but with similar facial features- standing there, hands in the pockets of her black trench coat and short blonde haired head tilted-a bored look on her features.
"took you long enough to wake up." she said dryly.
The man had only been paying slight attention until she spoke up. Until we meet again? Wait he had to put up with her sometime in the future? HELL NO! Though as he opened his mouth to protest it he was stopped by the sight of death ramming him head on again. Wow it was a bad day to be him. Still, no happy splatter again. As if the entire thing was a dream the man jerked upright in bed a sharp breath dragging into his lungs.
A few seconds later the pain that was running through his leg register and he kicked it up slightly dislodging the feline who looked more than a bit miffed at his rude treatment. Well Adrule was a prince of cats after all. At least in the pair's minds. Then the voice.
One thought ran through the man's mind. ********, another pain in the a**. He let his gaze slowly slide over to look at the woman, obvious annoyance on his face as the effects of an adrenaline rush started to wear off. "Do you know what trouble not finishing my job is going to cause me?" She was likely affiliated with this goddess if she was talking like that.
"What job?" the woman asked, this time looking rather like he was babbling. She had those same blue eyes too..but she was more expressive at least. "You appeared in the middle of my ship one minute and suddenly expect me to know who the bloody hell you are. The doctor just mentioned you were starting to wake up so I came in here to ask you who the ******** you are. So I will. Who the bloody ******** are you and what are you doing on my ship?" she asked.
No affiliated with she-bith then. Alright, he'd put up with her for now. Fingers drummed a moment upon his joaw as if debating the situation before his reply came. "Aleu Westrue." Best for real names. she's said a ship, it might be trouble to get out of her. "As to what I'm doing here. Ask the god's. They're the ones screwing up my life right now." He quickly stated eyes falling to the feline who was eyeing the woman inbetween washing a paw off. "Adrule, you in one piece." A casual flick of the ear seemed the answer for the man.
Golden eye's turned back to the woman. "Right. 'Drule and I are good. So if you want us gone we'll leave. Just where are we anyway?" Like he was going to be polite.
"I am Rouge Remika. And you are on my space ship. We're currently heading towards Gaia, if I am correct that's where you're from because you're definatly not Tison." the woman seemed amicable enough. She was doing her job-which was run her ship. He was a random person who ended up on it and she was doing her job of finding out who he was and what he was doing.
Then she blinked when he mentioned the gods. "The...gods? But they're dead. There are only two living gods. Jujike-curse that ******** name-and Oracle and I don't know of any reason they'd mess with a gaian's life. Oracle's a recluse who no one has seen in 3000 years-otherwise she'd be dead too-and Jujike's too obsessed with his own power over Tison to care about places lightyears away."
"It was a she. So I'm guessing it was your oracle woman." He shrugged momentarily before eyeing the Rouge woman. "And yes. I'm from Gaia, we're not Tison or whatever." He added, snapping his fingers in the direction of the feline and it pranced over to lounge in his lap. Only for a moment though. Then a paw reached up and knocked something that shouldn't have been there into a swaying motion.
Something that drew Aleu's eyes. "That stupid..." The voiced went quiet he he reached up both hands. On lifting the object away from his body. The other creating a quiet symbol in the air before lighting the object ablaze. The term on his mind was 'burn baby.' Sadly, the relic didn't seem to be complying. Bloody hell.
"That won't work I can tell you that much. It's lunican silver from what I can see. Which is odd for a gaian to be wearing but anyway. Lunican silver absorbs magic and then uses the magic to protect itself. Pretty much the stronger your fire, the stronger it's defenses."
Rouge was confused. "Did this woman speak to you? Cause if she did it's not Oracle. She took a vow of silence when she became the new oracle. She can't speak or she loses her powers and her immortality-which would kill her."
His hand twitched at the words. Larger form of bloody hell there. Then an annoyed glance in the woman's direction. "Riiiiight...." The world slowly slid off his tongue. "Fantastic. You can have it if you want it." He quickly said, starting to drag the thing off. Only to find that it must have slipped out of his hands. For it was back where it was. "So... she wasn't lying." EVEN BETTER! SHE b***h CURSED HIM!
A moment of silence please. Right. compusure. "She spoke alright, nonsense about reborn gods and stuff. Apparently this relic thing I can't get rid of means I'm stuck with a reborn deity of Fate." He stated. Really he just hoped she could make some sense of this. He didn't fancy taking care of kids. They'd get in the way... big time.
"Oh then I feel sorry for you. Fate was blind. That may crimp your style. Though I don't have a clue what's going on so I can't really help you." the woman said, stratching the back of her head. She hated it when she didn't understand what was going on. "But anyway, if you'll follow me I'll take you to the bridge and you can navigate us to where you were headed before then we can drop you off."
And with that the first guardian was reluctantly given his charge.
