"One tree, two tree, three tree!" It was a pretty terrible song, with an equally awful singer. Selly's voice was off-key and lacked any rhythm, as if she was just speaking quickly and stumbling in doing so.

Either careless or unaware of this, the patchwork puppy continued her merry chant, bounding along down the path with an occasional hop, every time she reached 'ten tree'.

"Six tree, seven tree, eight tree--"

Where she was, she couldn't tell you. Daddy was a bad babysitter and it was easy to get away from him and her brothers and go exploring. Not that she was particularly adventurous, she just didn't like being around those boring old wolves and her stupid brothers for two long.

When the raindrop hit her between the eyes, Selly gazed upward, then whined, long and loud, upon the realization many more were about to follow. The happy jog became a desperate run, and just as shower shifted into a downpour, she located a cave and clumsily stumbled inside it.

"Yay! Selly wins!"

Rain. They were strange things, those water drops falling from the sky. It intrigued the little brown puppy, so much so that she continuously fell over backwards because she leaned her head too far to get a good look at where ever it was that they were magically appearing from. But it didn't bother her. At least not until it began pouring. Then she started whimpering and crying, because the water drops were hurting her.

"Ow! Ow!" she cried, wiggling uncontrollably. "I didn't do it! No! Eli! Bad, bad girl!" she scolded herself, figuring that this 'punishment' was nothing but her own fault.

Wiggle, stop, wiggle, stop.

"Let's go!" Sprinting forward, she scrambled through the dirt, which was by now almost mud. It was amazing that she didn't slip and tumble like she normally did. Nonetheless, she continued on, her tail going about in random circles, as if the tail itself was what was propelling her forward.

Coincidentally, all of this crazy flurry of a run got her into the same cave that another pup had only recently began occupying. Flopping on her belly, she giggled then rolled over on the cold cave floor.

"No more hurt!"

Oh no! She'd just staked her claim and already there was an invasion! Well, they'd never take her alive! Or her cave as long as she was alive! And... Yeah!

"Hey! This is Selly's cave!" the dominantly blue pup squawked, fur bristling and toes wiggling as if she'd pounce at any given moment. It was true this wasn't her home, but it was for now! And it was being invaded! Somebody wanted to steal it! "You--"

She hesitated, blinked, stared, and perked her ears as if someone had just dropped a dead crow at her feet. --She really, really loved crow. It tasted better than anything else.

"You're a girl puppy," she concluded, amazed.

Eli's ears perked slightly, the sound of another voice making her wonder. Lifting her head, she blinked straight into the face of another puppy, and from the looks of it, the puppy wasn't happy with her presence. Groaning, she sat herself up, her puppy belly all wet from the run she had just collapsed from.

"Selly's cave?" she echoed, tilting her head slightly. Who was Selly? Her skull was quite dense, and so she didn't realize that the one talking to her was in fact Selly.

"You!" she echoed, finding this amusing. What a fun game she had just discovered! "You're a girl--"

"Well of course! Eli, Eli, Eli. Girl puppy Eli. Yes!" she cried, narrowing her eyes suspiciously at the other. What else had she been expecting? "Eli!" she snorted, shaking out her fur, attempting to get the moisture out of it. It was rather uncomfortable, and it made her feel like rolling over and squirming like a maniac.

"Is you a girl puppy?" she asked, nose twitching. "Yes!" she cried, almost triumphantly.

What a spaz, Selly thought. "Hey! Don't shake like that, you'll get water on me!" Often she switched back and forth from third person. It was a terrible habbit she'd developed by force.

Sally was Mama, and people called Selly Sally so much, she had to keep saying her name so they would remember the difference!

"Selly should take you hostage for invading the cave I took," she said seriously, but not really. It was that odd sort of foolish puppy serious. "But I'll keep you as Selly's beta wolf. My brother told me girl puppies don't leave their mommy except me. He's such a liar!"

Not only had she moved in to this cave, but apparently she had already declared herself an alpha and was gathering followers. "Eli sounds too much like Selly. I'll call you Rabbit instead."

Eli frowned at the other puppy. She didn't like her attitude! Having a bad attitude like that was just the thing her mother had always tried to keep her from getting. It seemed to work, for the most part. It was only when she was tired when she got grumpy.

"Yous grumpy, yesyes," she mumbled, plopping back down onto her belly after she felt that the water had been successfully evicted from her fur. "Momma always said I shouldn't let people boss me, no. Yous no different." She nodded firmly, wiggling her tail.

"But what is hostage?" she asked, stumbling over the new word she had just heard. It was strange. Was it something good? It sounded sharp, and she didn't like it. Sharp things cut and bite. She shivered.

"Cold Eli."

As her name seemed to be changed from one thing to another, she bared her teeth in a funny expression, not meant as a silent snarl or anything of the sort. It was her strange way of saying silently that something was weird.

"I eat Rabbit. You eat Rabbit? Must, must. I don't like Rabbit. Change it!"

Selly stuck her nose up. This was the worst beta she'd ever had! How completely obnoxious! "Don't talk to me like that! Selly is the alpha! And of course I'm grumpy, Selly has to be grumpy because she's the ALPHA!" Any time she said the 'A' word, she had to stress it in some way, either by saying it louder or longer.

"Your Mommy's not here, so it doesn't matter what she told you." Alpha's were grumpy! She knew they were. After all, she'd watched Raja, the best alpha ever according to Mommy and Daddy, and she was always grumpy. More grumpy than Selly could be if she tried.

"It's Rabbit if you're staying in Selly's home," she said stubbornly. "Eat rabbit? No. Gross! I don't like eating rabbits. They're gross. Besides, you look like one! You're all brown and jumpy."

Eli flinched backwards, her paws coming up underneath her body as the other puppy seemed to yell at her almost. Alpha? What the..

"I never chose you!" she cried, wiggling her tail furiously. "Selly is a bad alpha," she frowned, shaking her head. Of course, it wasn't like she could do any better, but possibly better than this one here. Weren't alphas supposed to look after their members and be nice to them and feed them and everything like that? That's how she had been taught, anyways.

"Mommy isn't here, but close by," she nodded, wiggling again. "And it does matter! Don't you have a mommy. Eli has. You must have one! Everyone has one," she babbled, her bright green eyes never leaving the form of Alpha Selly.

At the remark that her name would have to remain Rabbit if she wanted to stay in the cave, she frowned and seemed to throw a fit. "No like Rabbit!" she grumbled, shaking her head. "You're mean. You'll get punished, you know. Everyone that's mean gets punished. Mean and bad, bad. Eli was bad. Punished..." she trailed off, seemingly forgetting what on earth she was talking about.

"Not a rabbit!" she cried, rising to her paws defiantly. "Rabbits aren't brown, they're all white!" Or at least the ones she had seen were white.

Shaking her fur again, she settled down on her haunches. "Not Rabbit."

"You're seeing sick rabbits!" Selly shot back defensively. Rabbits were definately brown, not white, and if she'd seen white ones, they must have been sick. "And Selly is too a good alpha! The best alpha!"

And since Raja wasn't around and wasn't going to eat her for saying that, she declared it loud and proudly. Daddy had told her Raja didn't eat wolves, that was only the scare blue one who had fell down and died, but she was still wary of the big red alpha with no eyes and a vicious temper.

But Raja hadn't renamed any of her pack members, now that she thought about it...

"Eli is too much like it," insisted Selly. "Pick another name." Even though Rabbit was a good name.

Eli shook her head, not understanding why this pup thought that white rabbits were sick rabbits. Obviously she'd never seen a real rabbit before. Maybe she'd seen a dead one, covered in dirt. She snickered.

"You're wrong," she declared, shaking herself again. "Eli, Eli... rabbits are white!" At the announcement that Selly was the best alpha there was, she frowned and narrowed her eyes. This female was narrow-minded, wasn't she? She'd surely get zapped for that. Punishment.. yes, she'd get punished. It was always good to be open-minded. Mama said so.

Wandering forward slightly, she lifted her left paw and tried to poke the other's nose with it. That was until the subject of her name came up. She frowned again. Eli liked her name very much! Mama had given it to her, and she saw no reason to change it for this 'alpha' here.

"Eryi, then," she mumbled. Her brother's name. It sounded a lot like hers. She liked the way hers sounded. With Selly, her name was Eyri.

"I like Rabbit more," said Selly in defiance, and, when she went home today and told her mother about it she would tell her about a puppy she met named Rabbit who wasn't a very good beta at all and didn't listen to a word she said!

Why couldn't she find good beta like the beta Raja had? She had lots of them, too!

All this talk about Raja and Sally had her a bit homesick, though it had only been an hour at most she'd wondered away. "I'm going home, Selly wants to go home. Bye now."

The game was over, it seemed, because the puppy hurried back out of the cave into the now light drizzle. Back to the Black Forest, and back to Raja. She had some questions to ask the current best alpha ever.
