I've been thinking.
We have a pretty spiffy guild here, a lot of great attitudes, friendly people, and decent conversation. What if we could bring a little piece of that to the rest of Gaia?
I see a lot of flaming going on, especially in the avatar arena and selected forums. While we can't stop flaming, maybe we could put our heads together and find ways to actively combat some of it?
i.e. maybe dropping a few encouraging comments to people who get flamed. Maybe finding delicate ways to approach some of the reasons they get flamed (in other words nice ways to point out massive spelling errors, etc).
Maybe some of us could reach out and be internet mentors, become a source of sensible advice (As many of us know the Advice forum is full of a lot of horribly bad advice!)
What do you think? Ideas, suggestions?

That is such a great idea!! (and I agree, I'm not around as much as I'd like to be, but this guild is AWESOME!!)

Call me a cynic, but I don't see any of those getting flamed taking criticism (even if it's constructive) well. I know when I suggest using spellchecker or cutting back on the leetspeak, they take it the same as any flame. Pretty much the best way to deal with flames is ignore them. although firefox now has the spellchecker which I love.
Although I agree combating stupid and dangerous advice is extremely helpful.

I agree that there is a lot of needless flaming that go on, and that we need to look out for our fellow gaians, but I think that we need to be careful with that idea. For example, if we reached out to other members like us in th 21+ crowd, that'd be pretty cool. I felt akward when I got on gaia for the first time and felt that I would be older than everyone else, and this guild helped me out a lot with talking to new people the same age as me.
However, I don't think we should reach out to anyone too young. Not because they're bad kids or anything, but a bunch of 21+ people like us suddenly deciding to reach out to kids looks kinda creepy in theory and I'm sure would send up red flags throughout the admins' computers.
I like the reaching out idea, but let's try to help the older members the most because many of them may not know that groups like ours exist.

I like the idea. I was helped by some very friendly people when I first joined, and I like to return the favour when possible. However, my patience runs thin when posts such as this regularly appear: "need two flame swords please don8 to me". Generally reluctant to post a gentle admonishment in the thread so as to avoid bumping it back to the top, I usually PM the offender, and with gentle language (definately no flaming) ask them to use the GD or preferably CB for threads of that type. So far it seems to be working, although I have had a few nasty replies.
The mentor idea is a great one. If it helps reduce the overall number of recalcitrant n00bs (as distinct from newbs) that has to be a good thing.
EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to mention that the offending threads appear in the ED, my usual haunt.

Hm, well I guess the main question should be: what are our target groups. What's the plan of action. And how do we implement said plan.
So the next step is do we want to mainly focus on the 21+ crowds like Dafthank suggested, or try to reach out to a wider age range?

Anything that embraces a friendly atmosphere is good in my book.

Sounds like a plan. I should branch out in the forums I GO to really. Some times it just gets sort of depressing between people being so TOTALLY disrespectful of one another and ...people who type, using mostly single letters and numerals.

Perhaps we could start up a couple of threads offering help and advice to newcomers and post links to them here in the guild?
