The Azure Phoenix vs. Julius Benedict

FIGHT!

Time limit extended to two weeks
PostPosted: Sun Dec 24, 2006 12:34 am

From the stadium seating at the northern end of the arena a single man steps forth, moving to sit on the arena wall. Ashen grey locks cascade down to obscure his violet eyes, doing little to hide the two pristine balls of feathers and fluff that protrude from his skull. Wings of violet wreathed in azure flame span behind him to a total wingspan variable between five feet and what could possibly be infinity.

The depiction of a phoenix in tears is mirrored both upon the back of his loose fitting grey shirt and upon the tatoo on his back, the flames thereof almost moving as the tears seem to actually flow. Within his cargo pants a series of magical components he no longer truly needs are on hand, along with a few special pieces of equipment he saw fit to bring along, notably two travel sized grenades from his Aegis days.

Several components about his body seemed rather...unique. Floating about his head a series of planes of magical force deflect light and energy, almost as if they are intended to block not only physical assault, but mental assault as well. The strand of azure orbs floating about his neck glow with an unearthly power, a powerful aura of arcane magic hanging about them. A similar aura hangs about the chain wrapping about his arm and hand, the azure tint following the same line as the end of the chain flicks about his upturned palm, a metallic feather with jagged edges. The last two components that seem out of place are the orb of crimson light with flecks of green that surges about him at a constant speed and the cerulean glow about his boots that seems to bounce about out of sync with his own boots.

It was time for the sorcerer to prove his worth in the arena. Two wins by default did not get him warmed up as much as he would have liked to (or at all in general), but now this was not something that he could take care of. He had to go in with the capabilities that he had and hope for the best.

He would proceed to make his entrance from the southern end, opposite of his worthy opponent. Cloaked in pure black, he would not be visible until he reached near the center of the arena itself, where the sun would rid space of the shadow, leaving only the tall man in the black cloak still shrouded. As he slowly trudged towards the arena, he would keep his head facing towards the arena floor, appearing as a druid from an old church. His hands would be folded in his front until he stepped 30 feet inside, at which point they would go to his sides.

Lifting up his head, yet still keeping it wrapped under his cloak, he’d spy grey-shirted man, taking particular interest to all of the colors surrounding him that gave a deep contrast to his clothing. What could they be for? Julius would have to figure that out on his own, in the middle of the heat of battle. Guessing now could only bring consequences for later. For now, he would take his left hand, covered in titanium, and would reach inside his cloak, pulling out a medium-sized deck of what appeared to be guardian cards. Yet, they were a tad different, but not by much. The deck would soon float out of his hands and spread out around him, each glowing a different colored aura. The cards would have different characters printed on them, save one, which would be blank. The cards would then reform into a deck and would float back into Julius’ hand, which would then pocket them back in the cloak. However, at the distance between the two, his opponent probably would not be able to read the characters. Even so, they’d more than likely would be of a language foreign to him. They would probably appear nothing more than glowing auras that would soon disappear.

The chain began to unravel about Torment's hand and extend out before him as arcane might was infused with the almighty strength of incarnum. A simple glance toward his opponent gave him a slight smirk, the natural sense of magic flowing about both of the combatants bringing a sense of irony to the archmage eternal. Upon each of the third bones in from the tip of his fingers and the second of his thumb a small ridge began to appear. Each stretched the skin and gave it a tranluscent appearance as mystical energies began to burn within. This was the first step of summoning the Fist of Forgotten Sins, a powerful magical artifact forged by his hand specialized in a variety of magical applications. The favored application had been employed in his last traditional mage duel; a counterspelling artifact which gave him free reign to tear arcane matricies asunder and dominate with his own breed of incarnate arcanum.

The confident mage did not move an inch from his seat upon the far arena wall, simply watching the other man from afar. He could not help but wonder what tricks the man might have up his sleeve. The idea of his own defeat was preposterous, especially with the magical energies already coursing through him. This pondering having been done the whole of his body seems to flare with light as incarnum floats about his being. He is quickly hiden from sight, the same effect extending to his chain and wings, a null of his ability to be perceived. [Essentia Point Used] [Essentia Point Used] As yet this basic effect seemed to only act as a mere invisibility spell, but the aura about it was different, as if it wasn't done in its creation. Soon he would make no sounds nor disturb the air and eventually his aura and pull on the magic in the area would be hidden.

Upon the loss of sight of his opponent, Julius was a tad perplexed. Attacks were useless if he couldn’t see them, so naturally his first and primary objective was to establish sight of his opponent…but, how should he go about doing that? When invisible, a person’s body does not absorb any light, so simply observing shadows cast from the sun would not work, as light would theoretically pass right through his body and not cast any shadows. A life detection spell, which would allow the sorcerer to see organic matter, would work well…had the chain not have been a problem. Therefore, he decided that the best way of going about this problem was heat vision.

A nifty thing about his “guardian” cards was that the majority of them could be combined together to form limitless combination spells. So, take for example, the heat sensing. Based off of deposed gods he would take out the deck, causing two separate parchments cards to float before him. The characters on these cards, both in Ancient Greek, would read “Sun” and “Fire” respectively. The “Sun” card was also responsible for the gift of sight. Alone, as a personal effect, the card would allow night vision, or perhaps more acute vision. However, neither of those effects would help him. Therefore, he brought out the “Fire” card. Fire was something often associated with heat, which would give him the effect he desired. Though literally being fire vision, it would not translate over in that sense. While Julius swiftly closed his eyes, the two cards would glow a bright yellow and orange respectively. When he would open them, the majority of his field of view would be a blue color as his cards would float back inside his deck. However, in the distance, he would be able to see a yellow, orange, and red figure. It was his opponent giving off heat, which he would be able to distinguish for the duration spell. After a few turns, the effect would simply vanish, causing him to recast. However, this would not happen yet, and would give him some time to open up the battle. His current mode of sight would allow him to see a full outline of the body rather than a small aura generated from the center, which would give him some guessing ability about what his opponent would do next. As a measure of precaution, he’d be able to snap his fingers and return his normal vision. The spell would still last the same amount of turns, even if he went a whole one without using it. However, this would only provide basic sense. For the rest, he would have to listen, and listen well. It was easy to sense that this battle would test his ability to hear and pre-meditate what his opponent was doing, lest it would cost him.

What Julius had now hoped for was that the physical limitations of invisibility would take effect. With no light passing through his body, his opponent would theoretically remain blind without his eyes absorbing photons. That’s not to say that he couldn’t have already come up with a stopgap solution for this. Magic IS magic, after all. Briefly glaring at the huge amount of heat coming from his right hand, he’d instantaneously look back at his opponent, waiting for his next move. He was now prepared to eye where he was going, but what he would be doing would still be an unknown variable, and he’d just have to hope for the best. Julius wouldn’t attack either. If he attacked, it could potentially give away that he could spy what happened to his opponent. The element of surprise was ever so important. He’d keep his heat vision on until his opponent would begin to move oddly, where he would be forced to defend from an attack. But, for now, he’d remain motionless save for the deck of cards still in his hands, incase the need for some basic spells came up.

((XD Wow, this is going to seem bad when you read it, but I literally just copy, pasted, and editted these first three posts from Torment v Bubba. So the second step of the Perception Null is going to seem cleo-ish. >.<))

Julius would still see Torment, aye, but he'd be within a huge cloud of unassociated heat that seemed to surge from his frame and elegant flaming wings. Knowing precise motions would be difficult. As useless as it may seem at first, Torment began to fade away from the ability to be perceived by sense of smell. This extended not only to his smell, but to most of his skin and the various effect that are put out. Normal stuff like sweat, blood, tears, heat, and whatever the hell else came from that. This, however, did not extend to his wings, allowing him to still be "seen" by the heat rising from the flames. This would mean that Julius would know Torment's location, but beyond that he would be hard pressed to know what the mage was up to.

With a yawn he stood and began walking as his chain began to extend in the opposite direction. Torment's normal focus was devoted to the upkeep of the spell he was pushing beyond its normal limits, but the focus about his his neck and his chain flared with an aura of soulstuff, unseen as yet. The incarnum was fueling another spell that was building, causing black flames to flicker at Julius's feet. Should he move the ethereal flames would follow, as if they were a precursor to something bigger, or maybe an aiming reticule.

On a side note, Torment still had the ability to see, quite clearly at that. His inability to be perceived by sight was not about having light pass through him, just a general deception placed upon the world. Think it an illusionary mask extended to his form as a whole.

Upon noticing the "blob" of heat surrounding Torment, Julius would begin pondering what was causing that. Considering that his opponent went invisible, and fast, he would not have had proper time to notice anything causing the flames. But, nevertheless, it was blocking his view, and that was all that matters. He would have to think of a way to get that cloud of heat to die down, if even possible. However, his opponents next move would change his focus from a clear view of everything his opponent did to self-preservation.

He would notice an on and off sensation developing around his legs, amplified due to the fact he was wearing a black robe, notorious for keeping people hotter in desert conditions. He would look down and spy blobs of heat, signified in his vision by the color red, appearing and disappearing constantly at his feet. He'd make a quick snap of his fingers in order to see exactly what. Upon spying the black flames, he would try to move around to simply get away, but to no avail. Judging by this, he'd figure it had to stop at one point, so he'd carefully move around, waiting for the moment which, IF, the flames stopped so he could get out of the way. It wouldn't be much, just a few feet left and right strafing, but enough to tell what was going on.

This time, he would pull out another two cards, and use them one at a time. The first card would once again be the sun card, causing a small, very bright ball of light to float above his head. The holy light had the power to potentially "purify" some attacks, usually those relating to poisoning. It would also provide defense to any attack from above and those related to shadow and darkness. More importantly, the light would have the power to temporarily blind opponents if they stared into it. Because of where it was with in proportion to Julius, it would be hard not to, and could give him a chance later to launch an attack. Perhaps it would cause his opponent to lose concentration, but no one could be sure at the moment. The other card, simply translating into "sky", would dissapear without a trace. What it would do, or what it did, would be currently unknown. With the sun card back in the deck, he'd snap his fingers again to see if he could distinguish anything his opponent would do until his supposed attack came.

The flames merely followed Julius but the spell that was in effect seemed to grind to a halt as a more important procedure was enacted. Torment's own focus pushed the Perception Null to a point where his form no longer registered as taking up space within the air or any other medium he was to enter. This meant that vibrations in the air or ground would cease emmanating from his body, the greatest of these being sonic vibrations or sound. As Torment began lazily floating towards his opponent Julius would notice one thing more before the Perception Null was completed. A surge of azure light around the man completed the effect as the chain's constant supply of focus and energy caused Torment's aura to fade from view. His soul melds would be, by and large, ignored by the world. This simple fact meant that the huge flaming wings sprouting from his back would no longer be generating a flame of any effect. In short, Julius's heat vision would fail him entirely now.

The Fist of Forgotten Sins began to generate an inner luminiscence that would go unseen by anyone and anything not directly connected to the Perception Null effect. Within each of the five pyramidal gems an azure brilliance was growing and would soon be ready for the work of counterspelling and dispelling. Torment, meanwhile, hadn't a care in the world as he floated towards Julius in an indirect flightpath. His chain was slowly extending out from his body to lazily crisscross in front of him, but he didn't seem hostile.

Hell, he didn't seem interested at all.
