Yahoo News: Che Guevara CD case pulled from shelves

Quote:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Target Corp said on Friday it had pulled a CD carrying case bearing Ernesto "Che" Guevara's image after an outcry by critics who label the Marxist revolutionary a murderer and totalitarian symbol.

Target had touted a music disc carrying case for Che admirers emblazoned with the Argentine-born guerrilla's iconic 1960 portrait by Alberto Diaz, or "Korda." A set of small earphones was superimposed on the image, suggesting he was tuned in to an iPod or other music player.

"It is never our intent to offend any of our guests through the merchandise we carry," Target said in a statement. "We have made the decision to remove this item from our shelves and we sincerely apologize for any discomfort this situation may have caused our guests."

Some business columnists had decried the product, sold under Target's brand, saying the trendy discount chain was giving in to a misguided fashion craze while ignoring Guevara's role in bringing
Fidel Castro's Communist rule to Cuba.

"What next? Hitler backpacks? Pol Pot cookware? Pinochet pantyhose?" wrote Investor's Business Daily in an editorial earlier this month, citing the Guevara case as a model of "tyrant-chic."

Good riddance.

Anything that has Che Guevara on it I'd like to see it gotten rid of, in particular the t-shirts. I wonder how many people actually know who he is/was, and what he stood for, let alone what he did.

Che Guevara seems to be more iconic than anything else. What is fashionably appropriate? Not conforming. What does Che Guevara represent to these people? None conforming. So why not slap it on a few items and sell it? I think Target didn't see it as slapping on just a tyrant on the cd case, but saw it more as a trend that has been seen on so many pictures, posters, shirts, etc, of his infamous picture taken by Alberto Korda. I'm glad people didn't stand for it.

This just shows the irony (I think it's irony) that a man who supposedly stood for anti-capitolism is now the biggest commercial symbol since the mc donalds golden arches... hehe a fitting end i think. Makes me want to edit a picture of him and slap a few more logos/icons in it. Mwahahaha!

That's Ironic...
Rap upsets me, and thousands of other people. Will they pull that from the shelf as well?

One of the only reasonable ways to have Che on your shirt, and I should know, as I own that very shirt.
