Does anyone actually learn chords and intervals in class? I know our conductor has the idea of trying to teach us intervals by ear, but none of my other teachers ever have. Probably why most students did not like those sessions...
This also varies by which insturment you play I suppose. For example, if you play piano you have to know chords, but it is easier to play chords on a piano.
Anyways, discuss.

I find that my new teacher also has suddenly felt the need to teach us chords also. half of us in the class already know chords but she still fills the need

Well it's not a class, but in my school's Jazz band, he sometimes stops to teach us about 7th chords and different modes and such.

none of our teachers thought us that. *we've been through 3 teachers in band.* last year, our director only played bass Guitar, and did'nt even know what i ment by "Trombone" stare he was an idiot, and did'nt know how to conduct. (grrr) haha. though, at one of the "band partys" we TPed his car. that was fun. haha.
i digress..
our current conductor plays piano, and has thought me some stuff, but not as a class thing. my old section leader, lovingly known as "Freshman", tough me alot last time he was at my house. ^_^ *i heart the Circle of Fifths!*

i took music theory last year (junior year in high school last year, senior now) and we did a bunch of stuff with chords...listening, writing, so on and so forth. I love theory work. I too love the circle of fifths. And If I could marry any musical technique...it would be the a harmonic minor scale biggrin
