Ashki lay spread out on his belly at the bottom of Pride Rock. It had been a while now since he and his mate had joined this pride, and everything in their life had been absolutely perfect. He hadn't thought that it could be possible when he had been younger, but now him and Kit were mates! He loved her so much and every day he could just feel the affection flowing between the two. It was simply amazing; it was his life, the very reason blood flowed through his veins. Kit made his life worth living.
Sighing happily, the fluffy male rested his great head upon his paws, the warmth of the sun relaxing him and making him tired. He smiled to himself, thinking that nothing could make their life any better...
Or, so he thought. Since he had grown to adulthood and he had watched his lovely mate grow into it as well, he couldn't help but notice that he had a certain lust for her. He didn't quite understand it, but it was obviously something important or else it wouldn't have bothered him so much. He often lost sleep over it; he would just lay there watching his mate breathe. It puzzled him, and he wondered if Kit was feeling the same thing.
Figuring there was only one way to stop it from bothering him, he rose to his paws with a low grunt. He shook the dirt from his fur and then turned about. He would find Kit and talk to her about this. Maybe she would know what was wrong.
Walking quickly, he approached their den. Yet as he grew closer, he slowed down. The purple male was having his doubts about this. Maybe he shouldn't speak to her about this. But, he was already here and he figured he might as well give it a shot. What was the worst that could happen.
"Kit?" he called quietly, not sure if she was awake yet or not. It was still fairly early in the morning. "Kit, darling," he purred, hoping he wouldn't wake her up from a nice dream or some such thing.

The only thing better than a dream about her mate was her mate himself, and so as Kit's eyes fluttered open, a smile traced across her lips. "Hey there, Ash," she murmured lovingly, grunting as she pulled herself to her paws. After her lips parted in a mighty yawn, she shook herself off and smiled again, rubbing her cheek against his own. "How're you?"
She, too, had felt the odd urges that Ashki was struggling with, but unlike him, she had an inkling of what it was about. Whenever the sensation came, all that she could think of were cubs. Cubs! What a joyous thought, and yet a terrifying one as well. Was she ready? Was he ready? Were they ready? Life felt so perfect... was it a good idea to bring cubs in as well? She had been planning on asking Ash about it, but never seemed to get around to it. Besides, would it make him comfortable? Did he even want cubs?
A slight shudder ran down her spine. What if he didn't want cubs? Kit was terrified of the thought. At this point, she couldn't imagine life with Ash... he was her one and only love, the truest. But she had always wanted a family...
Shaking the thought off, her eyes sparkled as she tilted her head, smiling at him.

Ashki purred as his mate stirred and woke up. Just seeing her look at him with those beautiful eyes and feeling her body against his, it simply made his heart soar. It also made him forgot all of his worries, which allowed him to momentarily forget why he had come looking for Kit specifically at this moment. Yet when she asked how he was, he suddenly remembered.
"Hey, love," he mumbled deeply, giving her an affectionate kiss on the cheek. "I'm better now that you are here," he said sweetly, his tail flicking. He absolutely loved Kit!
"But, Kit.." he hesitated, wondering if he should bring this up now when the moment was so perfect. But, he had already opened his mouth and so he had no choice but to get on with it. Otherwise, he'd have his mate asking him what was the matter. And he didn't want to worry her like that.
"I've been having these feelings. I-I think they are good," he added in quickly, so as not to make her think that he wasn't happy with her in some way. "I don't know quite what it is, though, love. It confuses me and I can't sleep at night sometimes." When that happened, he dreamt of her. It always seemed to get everything else off of his mind and usually allowed him to rest, if only for a little while.
"It's a feeling that I have.. towards you. I've never felt it before." He let himself trail off there. Perhaps she would know what it was? He was too nervous to continue on in that moment.

"Like... you want to start a family?"
Had Kit been human, she would've flinched and clasped a hand over her mouth, surprised by the lack of forethought in her response. As she was a lion, though, her ears folded back and she smiled sheepishly, completely and utterly embarassed. Inwardly she scolded herself. Not the best way to broach the subject, Kit!
"I've... been feeling the same way," she said softly. "And I think.. maybe... it's my maternal clock, so to speak." With a gentle smile, she added, "Every time I look at you, I feel it, and something in my mind says wouldn't he be a great father?." Kit sighed softly, almost longingly. "But I've been kind of afraid to ask you about it, because... well, it's silly, I guess. I just didn't want to act too suddenly or anything."
There was relief in her face, though. She had been worried that the strange feelings were exclusive to her and that there was, perhaps, something wrong with her. Knowing that Ash had the same problem made her feel even more bonded to him.

Ash's eyes widened in slight surprise. He hadn't expected his mate to come up with something so quickly, and he hadn't realized that she might have been feeling the same thing. It almost made him relieved. He had heard about females getting pressured into things by their mates, and he didn't want that to happen to her. He didn't want to make her do something she wasn't ready for or she didn't want to do.
"Y-yes, I think that might be it," he said, sounding a bit flustered. He was a bit embarassed about this. He wasn't so naive, he knew how cubs came about. Or at least the gist of how they came into existance.
As she began speaking of her 'maternal clock', he smiled softly and moved closer to her, nuzzling her under the chin. "You really think I'd make a good dad?" he asked, flicking his tail curiously. He hadn't really thought about raising cubs before. Would he be any good at it? He loved cubs, yes, but could he raise them properly?
As he looked into her eyes, he felt the urge again. He could see it in her eyes that they were ready. They were both feeling the need for a family, and the both wanted one. It took all of his self-control to not act upon his urge so quickly. He had to wait until she was completely ready, and not rush into things. He needed to avoid rushing everything, it would probably only make things turn sour.
"I think you would make the best mother," he purred, his soft voice meaning to relax her. "And the cubs... they would look at you and smile, and they'd say 'What a mother I have, she's the best of them all'."

With a purr of delight at his response, she said brightly, "And they'd look at you and think And my father is great too! He's kind and loving and handsome to boot!... oh, wait, maybe that last part is more me than our potential children." She smiled mischeviously, placing her paw on his. "Really, Ash, I think you'd be a terrific father. You're kind, caring, gentle, intelligent..." she let out another happy sigh. "Why else would I love you so much? I would've never fallen for someone that I didn't think would be a good father..."
She pressed her nose to his throat, nuzzling it lovingly. "Oh, I've been so nervous about asking you about this... I was afraid you wouldn't want cubs. Silly, maybe, but... I dunno, it's always been a desire of mine."

Ash smiled down at his mate, her words making his fur prickle with excitement and anticipation. Was this really happening? Were they really contemplating parenthood? Oh, it seemed like so long ago when they were but young lions who were looking for nothing more than a loving pride to become a part of. Now.. they had come so far.
As she mentioned their cubs talking about how handsome he was, he couldn't help but chuckle at her. "You are so silly, Kit my dear. It is you they will be talking about when they say they got their good looks from their parents. You, my love. You are the most beautiful of them all." He purred and nuzzled her, bringing his body closer to hers, so much so that they were nearly touching.
He chuckled again when she mentioned having been so nervous about talking to him about this. "I felt the same way. I was afraid you weren't feeling the same thing I was.."
"But Kit," he purred, licking her cheek affectionately. "You shouldn't have worried. Anything that makes you happy, makes me happy." He nodded firmly, nipping at her ears in a playful manner. It was true. Seeing Kit happy made him feel like the luckiest male on the planet, like he wasn't a total failure like he had been brought up to think he was.
"How many do you think there'd be?" he asked, tilting his head slightly. One? Two? More?

Kit smiled sheepishly as he sang her praises. Though she didn't feel it was true, she said nothing, knowing that he probably felt as strongly about it as she did about his wonderful qualities.
With bright eyes at his question, she said, "I don't know how many there might be... my parents were younger than us, and they had three cubs. I figure we could have up to four, maybe five.." She blinked. "Wow, five cubs! That'd be a pawful!"
She fell silent for a moment, thinking about what she had just mentioned - her parents. Kit had a vague memory of mentioning meeting her father to Ash long ago, and he had seemed terrified at the prospect. Of course, that was before his confidence had been strengthened... but would she be willing to have cubs with a male that had never even met her father? She was such a daddy's girl, after all!
"My parents... Ash, have you thought any more about meeting my father sometime?" Her voice was gentle and she tilted her head. "We wouldn't have to stay long, but I know he'd like to meet his daughter's mate!" Tentatively, she offered a smile. "Oh, I know he'd like you, and I think you'd like him, too.."

Ash's eyes widened again as Kit began wondering about just how many cubs they might have. As the numbers she mentioned grew and grew, he felt his heart pound. Five?! He gulped slightly, imagining him running around in the middle of the night, chasing after his cubs to get them to go to sleep. A pawful... she was right. But then again, wouldn't any amount of cubs be a pawful? He didn't remember what it was like to be a cub, but he knew that some could be quite energetic and rambunctious. Especially nowadays.
But he wouldn't worry himself with that. He was almost certain that he and his wonderful mate would be able to handle anything their cubs would dish out. After all, they'd just be little versions of themselves, right? Oh, he hoped so. Then they would be so easy to understand and deal with.
He chuckled, though it was a bit nervous. His first time being a father.. it was exciting and frightening all at the same time. "I bet they'll be the best cubs ever, Kit. All because you are their mother." He purred, nuzzling her affectionately. He simply couldn't stop complimenting her. He just loved her that much and he wanted to show it to her all the time.
When the subject of her parents came up, his ears fell back and he became even more nervous than before. Would he be able to keep up his confidence in the presence of her father? What if he didn't like Ashki, contrary to what his mate had said? He couldn't stand disappointing his love's father. That would just be the ultimate worst rejection in the entire world. And he couldn't stand letting her down like that!
But, he supposed, the best he could do was to stick his chin up and to do the best that he could. After all, he couldn't be that bad of a mate for Kit?
"Oh... well, if it will make you happy, love, then I'll meet him any day," he said, smiling sweetly.

Kit narrowed her eyes thoughtfully, watching Ash. He still seemed apprehensive, no matter the face he put on, but she decided not to acknowledge it this time. There was no way Ausha could reject Ashki... Ashki the most sweet-hearted lion she had ever met, and her father only wanted what was best for her! Wasn't Ash what was best for her? There was no doubt in her mind.
"Great!" she replied happily, nibbling at the tuft of fur on his cheek. "You two will get on fabulously." Fabulously? She even sounded like Ausha!
"Whenever you want to go is fine with me. After all, the graveyard isn't too far from the Pridelands, and Daddy is there all the time. I'm in no rush!"

Ashki was glad that his mate had decided not to say anything. He knew that she could see straight through the best of his shields, and so he had been worried that she would have asked him if something was wrong. Nothing was really wrong, it was just that he was nervous. But he wanted her to know that he would try his best for her and that he wouldn't let her down.
Chuckling again, he pawed gently at her face. She was so beautiful. "Fabulously, eh?" he laughed, a smirk on his face. He realized that that wasn't something she normally said, and so he thought it rather strange, yet funny. Nonetheless, he didn't pry too much. Perhaps she was just happy about today and the decision they had both come to about their futures.
"Well anytime is good for me, love. I'll go whenever you want me to," he replied, nuzzling into her as if he were a tiny cub. "But first, could we get some rest? I woke up too early and didn't get much sleep last night.."

She returned the nuzzle, adding in an affectionate n** or two. "A bit more rest sounds fine to me, love. Especially if it means a bit of snuggle time with you." She winked and loped back to the warmest niche of the cave, sprawling out luxuriously. A familiar purr rumbled in her throat as she gazed at him through dark green eyes.
"Well?" she said teasingly, batting at the air with a paw.

Ash blushed immensely beneath his fur. Was this really happening?
Smiling dreamily, he wandered forward, trailing after her. As she lay down in the warmest part of the cave, he lay down directly next to her, curling close so that they could share their body heat and be completely warm.
"Well, I'm completely in love with you," he purred, resting his head upon his paws as his baby blue eyes glanced up at her. Then, as much as he wanted to stay awake and simply watch her, all of his restless nights caught up with him. He couldn't help but let his eyelids fall and his mind wander off into dreamland.
There, he would dream of their family.
