I prefer beating a game without cheats first, then just for the fun of it I might, but usually only the really crazy ones, like bighead mode and stuff like that. Takes the fun out of the game for me if I use the other cheats.

A better way to build up the dog in harvest moon 64 is to bring him inside, whistle, wait for him to start running and then turn on the tv...he should run in place....
You know, feeding him fish and grown veggies works well too...

i usually tend to stay away from walktrhoughs and cheats but if i get stuck on something and ive done everything that i can think of, i'll turn to the walkthrough. once i see what i have to do i dont use the walkthrough again until im once again.. stuck. xp
