I had a long conversation/discussion earlier with one of my long time friends. It seems that whenever I do get ahold of him, I live in kansas and he moved to arizona, we get into some nerdy debate about something. Anywho, just though I would post the chat and discuss it further with anyone that would like to comment or debate it.
I'm Morbid Machinery and my friend is Plagues of Eden btw. I will warn that I was drinking before and during the conversation and watching a video. Im also a bad speller and not very good at grammer as well sweatdrop .
Plagues of Eden: brains!
Plagues of Eden: braaaaaaaaaiiiiins
Morbid Machinery: bored, aren
Morbid Machinery: bah, cant type today
Plagues of Eden: i'm watching some physics video about parallel universes
Morbid Machinery: oh? sounds neat. Im watching a Go instructional video with bad subs
Plagues of Eden: lol
Morbid Machinery: Im waiting for a number of a guy that does custome wood pieces to see if I cant get a piece of spruce the right size for a Goban
Morbid Machinery: and I found a place on ebay that sells cheap handforged swords to make the lines
Plagues of Eden: sweet
Plagues of Eden: any ideas for the stones?
Morbid Machinery: Im going to buy some yunzi stones online, they're really pretty
Morbid Machinery: some secret way of making them that gives the black stones a semi-opaque green look when you hold them up to the light.
Plagues of Eden: ah i've seen those
Morbid Machinery: yeah, alot of pros use them and they look nice
Plagues of Eden: how much?
Morbid Machinery: and american spruce is the closest to Kaya you can get anywhere out of japan
Morbid Machinery: depends on how thick I want them
Plagues of Eden: and i know you like them thick
Morbid Machinery: at most? just under $100 including shipping
Morbid Machinery: and how!
Morbid Machinery: It's just hard finding a set of them in Bi-convex style, too many online, especially ebay, are flat on one side, which doesn't seem right to me
Morbid Machinery: guess I've watched too much Hikaru No Go . . .
Morbid Machinery: brb
Morbid Machinery: ok, had to piss
Plagues of Eden: lol
Morbid Machinery: too much beer . . . hard as hell to get drunk off it unless I have some liquor, which i don't
Plagues of Eden: lol
Plagues of Eden: it takes 3 to get me going
Morbid Machinery: yeah, i get a good buzz off about 4, but can't get drunk off them without having to run to the bathroom every 20 minutes
Plagues of Eden: but i can generally hold more liquor than most
Morbid Machinery: that's always a good thing
Morbid Machinery: most people see it the other way around
Plagues of Eden: god damn mechwarrior 3 98% downloaded and now kb/s has dropped to 4
Morbid Machinery: that blows, I had the Please! teacher series at about that for a couple days before I was able to get the rest of the way done.
Plagues of Eden: please teacher series
Plagues of Eden: ?
Morbid Machinery: Its a short anime about a kid that finds out his teacher is a hot alien
Morbid Machinery: its kinda stupid, but really funny
Plagues of Eden: oh, i'll stick to my physics lessons thank you very much
Morbid Machinery: lol, if you wish . . . but at least Ill be prepared if a hot alien does show up. You and your physics? Pfft!
Plagues of Eden: i guess that depends if she wants to talk about anime or not
Morbid Machinery: She'll be an alien, earth physics would be stupid and mundane to her. An alien would like to learn about culture and things unique to earth
Morbid Machinery: every planet has physics
Plagues of Eden: true, but if she was a scientist she would want to know our views on the universe
Morbid Machinery: and most likely, if they had the technology to travel here, they would be able to figure them out relatively easy
Morbid Machinery: culture and diverse things that materialize from personal preferece and likes and dislikes (not facts) would be hard if not impossible to calculate
Plagues of Eden: but what if these aliens are difficult to converse with... they say math is the universal language
Morbid Machinery: but what would you say once you figured out how to talk to them? what would they want to know?
Morbid Machinery: again, math is the universal language because it's absolute, its the same in every language.
Plagues of Eden: everything we could teach them
Plagues of Eden: both science and culture
Plagues of Eden: and anything else you could think of
Morbid Machinery: I would hope that they would be beyond us in science if they were visiting us. Unless we somehow make it there first
Plagues of Eden: or, perhaps, we've solved a few puzzles they have not
Plagues of Eden: even if they are technologically superior
Plagues of Eden: kinda like star trek
Morbid Machinery: Unless they prefer the route of the teacher, and are willing to show us their ways, and science.
Plagues of Eden: i'm sure that would happen, but if they are true scientists they'd want to examine all the evidence first
Plagues of Eden: in essence, both parties would share knowledge
Plagues of Eden: and eventually work together
Plagues of Eden: in a perfect universe
Morbid Machinery: that would be the best, barring hostilities
Morbid Machinery: probably from us out of ignorance
Plagues of Eden: i'm sure there will be plenty of specism
Morbid Machinery: super-racism where they lynch us . . .
Morbid Machinery: and steal our womans
Plagues of Eden: or enslave us
Morbid Machinery: that would be useless, we suck to much to make good slaves
Plagues of Eden: unless they set up a Matrix
Morbid Machinery: better to use our land to engineer a new obediant race that could survive in either our world, or the harshness of theirs
Plagues of Eden: or they would just use machines
Morbid Machinery: machines can't show much loyalty, Unless they manage to develope intelligent life
Morbid Machinery: then it gets much to political for my taste
Plagues of Eden: they don't need loyalty if they can program obedience
Plagues of Eden: machines can survive in many more climates than any life we know of
Plagues of Eden: they can use them by remote control or like a suit
Morbid Machinery: But the idea of reason outside of trial and error is beyond what alot of robotic specialist believe can be acheived without actual intelligence. Giving intelligence gives way to giving the ability to make choices
Morbid Machinery: which is where god ******** up
Morbid Machinery: Even if something as solid as Aasimov's 3 laws were incorperated, defiance and even treason can be possible within the system
Plagues of Eden: they could still use machines to augment themselves or their slaves
Plagues of Eden: any one being could be specially suited to it's task
Plagues of Eden: and not to mention to gene therapy
Morbid Machinery: but seeing how close even we are to being able to specialize species with DNA tampering, In the end I think that the cost of maintenince and devolopement and supply of specialized equipment
Morbid Machinery: On a grand multi-generation scale, i believe investing into a system were problems and weaknesses could be bred out or forced out through manipulation would eventually prove to be easier to maintain and modernize over even assisting machines
Morbid Machinery: Of course that is if my hope of a species that can plan on such a scale exists, most people worry about their own self before the well being of the future in ours to be capible of such
Plagues of Eden: i still believe that machines could help enhance cognative speed, strength, tool usage, etc
Morbid Machinery: Yes, the basis of the definition could broaden that thought to anyting from a stick used to pry something apart, all the way to nano technology made up of calcium and carbon already found within our bodies to perform specific tasks when certain conditions are met
Plagues of Eden: all i'm saying is even with gene manipulation a species would have to use tools. our society is so dependent on tools it would be near impossible to live without them
Plagues of Eden: and adding machine augments would enhance an organism's ability to utilize t hose tools
Plagues of Eden: and if the machines were self-sustaining like the organism that controls them
Plagues of Eden: they would be much more durable
Plagues of Eden: and versatile
Plagues of Eden: think about having mechanical sensor readings downloaded directly to your brain, which is adapted to process and store the knowledge at an alarming rate
Plagues of Eden: then using this knowledge to target a weapons system that is controlled by your brain
Plagues of Eden: you would be able to calculate speed and trajectory of both the weapon and target
Plagues of Eden: and execute with this precision
Plagues of Eden: no need for a user interface
Morbid Machinery: Yes, but all that should come after first contact or the event of terra forming. Once, you have the Ideal base, any kind of attachment for specialization would only be for that and out of range of living components
Morbid Machinery: I'm not denying the need for machines and the coupling of living beings with machines to progress and trancend beyond regular evolution, Im just saying that I believe getting your base, your starting point, down first should be a top priority for a species that can think and successfully plan that far ahead
Plagues of Eden: true, but you need machines for that
Plagues of Eden: it's a process that will have to go hand and hand
Morbid Machinery: Believe me, when the chance comes to cyberize my body, Ill do it, I just think that relying too much on the machines is a mistake that has crippled mankind before, and will again if it has the chance
Morbid Machinery: brb, food'
Morbid Machinery: To me its like building a castle on top of bad soil, or swampland. No matter how great the thing is, its nothing without a proper starting point.
Morbid Machinery: or building a million dollar house under a highway, a bad starting place will ruin it all
Plagues of Eden: i don't doubt that selective reproduction wouldn't be nessessary,
Plagues of Eden: wait
Plagues of Eden: i don't doubt that selective reproduction WOULD be nessessary
Plagues of Eden: but i highly doubt it would go without mechanical augments
Morbid Machinery: but again, then you go into the realm of politics and if it would be socially acceptable for something as drastic as that from happening
Plagues of Eden: and gene therapy wouldn't
Plagues of Eden: ?
Morbid Machinery: Now?
Morbid Machinery: not to improve the human species in ways that would help us evolve and possibly branch out from earth
Morbid Machinery: but it is for some reason acceptible with the fight aginst disease and malformaty
Plagues of Eden: and it's ok to put staples in peoples stomaches, attach metal plates to bones, and replace limbs
Morbid Machinery: yes, but not to make us able to breathe water or something to that extent
Morbid Machinery: common belief, from what I've kept up on, mind you, doesn't tolerate those things
Morbid Machinery: They want to live forever, but not transcend from their human forms
Plagues of Eden: .
Morbid Machinery: its odd
Plagues of Eden: they'll have to pick one or the other
Morbid Machinery: yes, politics . . .
Morbid Machinery: doesn't matter if its right or wrong, only if its socially acceptable
Morbid Machinery: which is why I fear that I won't live to see the age of cyberized man
Morbid Machinery: not until the majority of the baby boomers die off
Morbid Machinery: but the very science Im waiting for to help me is keeping them alive longer to prolong the eventual fruition of the said science
Morbid Machinery: hopefully some other country will work it out before us and force us into a competition with them like the USSR did with the space race
Plagues of Eden: we'll see
Plagues of Eden: i use hope we have the maturity to use it wisely
Plagues of Eden: *just
Plagues of Eden: http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=655
Morbid Machinery: yes, full of hopes for the future. I'd be nice for everything to work out
Plagues of Eden: wouldn't it?
Plagues of Eden: it might make all this bullshit that's happening now worth it
Morbid Machinery: yeah, they say its gets worse before it gets better and you have to deal with all the problems of life before reaching the joys of nirvana. Maybe all the s**t we've have had, and will have, to go through will be paid back to the human race
