I also don't remember, but you might try reading the book. It's a little gross sometimes...they go way further into detail than they need to at times, but it's a good book, and it's easier to catch everything.

私立聖ルドルフ
There are a lot of different dances with fans in that movie; the only one I can really remember, that my Japanese friend told me about, was the Season Dance. But there's apparently some inaccuracies with the film, so if you wanted to learn the dances you should probably learn them from someone who knows about that kind of thing.

OK~!! You just happened to stumble upon me, well I used to study Geisha culture!!! (^_-)V.
Well it depends on the dance, there are many different dances and each have a name. You can't just call it a "Hand Dance" or a "Fan Dance". Like if you go to Gion Kobu, the Geisha and Maiko are famous for the "Gion Kouta" dance which also involves fans. Sei was right though, they did do a season dance but I can't seem to tell which one, since there are different season dances. The only one I can remember right now is Miyako Odori, the cherry dance.
Though there are different types of dances, and it does not depend wether they use fans. The style of dance Geisha usually dance to is called Nihon-Buyo, and their style of singing is usually Kouta or Enka.

That book is one of my favorites, I have read it a dozen times and I never grow tire of it. Each time I read it I learn something new.

It's awesome. I have on mind buying this biography of a geisha's life. I work in Barnes & Noble so whenever I pass it, I just sigh. I must have that book!

Well....in Bon Odori (Obon dancing) they have this type of dance called "sensudori" (weird way I've heard it said) but I think its supposed to be "sensu-odori." literally "folding fan dance". Which is a type, but as for actual specifics, the dances used in the movie could have specific names which I don't know (I haven't seen the movie).
Matsuo: I think Sakura Odori is Cherry blossom dance; Miyako means 'capital.' Which is why Kyoto is also known as Miyako, as it used to be a capital. Moreover, chinese reading of Miyako is the 'to' in Kyoto. 京都

Apart from the subject, you guys probably already noticed how Tokyo is the backwards word of Kyoto? It's funny.

memoirs of a geisha is really one of the last books people should read to learn anything, there's been plenty of books written by actual geisha.
