User ImageI have recently returned to Albion and escaped death...for now, at least. Mother suggested that I keep a journal while I "readjust."

The Court is exactly as I remember it. I wish I didn't have to. Then again, it isn't something I could have avoided for long, at the rate I was going. Sooner or later, someone would have come to collect me.

Though I do find him irritating at times, Dante bringing me back to my birth-country is better than some alternatives. And I do not just mean a noose around my neck...Better my brother have dragged me off than my former b*****d of a teacher.

I have given up thievery (as far as anyone here knows). For one, it was a fair exchange for keeping my life, and thus the things in it that have become near and close to me. On another note, I'm being watched too closely to actually try anything. Though, my dear brother may soon find himself missing a set of daggers.

Mother seems happy, both in her new position and to see me "back home." The King gave a royal welcome for my sake, but for now we remain distant. I am grateful to him, in the least, for not breaking to political pressures and granting Mother some form of happiness.

I forget the season here. It is always cold up north, where the royal court is, and weather shifts only from what sort of snow or rain we might have. It is always cloudy. I never imagined I'd miss the sun when I moved only at night for years. Staring at a gray sky is very suffocating, I suppose.

Speaking of gray, Kalei is molting, though he stays indoors mostly because of the chill. I was concerned for a while that he might not be able to adjust to the weather, but the adult feathers growing in seem to be keeping him warm enough. He is resilient enough, and a bit of a spectacle among the other nobles. Most have heard of griffins, but have never seen all of their like, before.

Watching Kalei reminds me of many things.

I miss her.

User ImageI wonder just what he's up to, that little brother of mine.

Being as irritating as ever, of course. It's been just over a month that he's been back in the country of our birth, and he's already making a fuss and acting very anti-social. Though, that's when he's in the best of moods. Not that I can really blame him, though - he has little to no reason to be very friendly to these people who treated him so poorly in his childhood, and are attempting to seek forgiveness now that he is a full-blood prince and his mother Queen.

Anyway, the way he's brooding is also very funny to watch. It's that love-struck brooding, which I never would have believed I'd get the chance to see in my lifetime. This woman he's fallen for must be something of a wonder, to make him act this way.

We return to the country of Deste's highest crimes in a month or so, to begin paying reprimands. Little b*****d...he's going to end up causing us a lot of money. Not very many people happy with that, I imagine.

His 'griffin' is a very interesting creature though. Bigger than the likes of any creature I've seen, though Kalei - I think that's how you spell his name - is more sleek than muscle. Probably makes him fast, though, which is probably what his owner likes. I might think about getting one...Norene is very infatuated.

They shed a lot, though. Still, that might be just molting for the bird's growth. It's actually come in handy for finding the brat when he wanders off; just follow the trail of feathers.

I close with a thought of the day: If Deste is now full-blood prince, does that make me the b*****d son? Hah, how very amusing to think about.

User ImageWe crossed the river about an hour ago, and are currently switching out horses for our carriage. I'm very excited - I write by sunlight!

It is not so much that I've never seen sunlight, but this type, these southern rays, feel different. Warming and friendly, I think.

Dante and Deste are at each other's nerves already. It makes me smile, remembering how they used to act when we were all children. There are times when I wish we could go back to those days, before we knew what terrible things Scandal, Infidelity, and Illegitimacy were. But alas, that is the world we were all born into - myself, my little sister, my beloved, his little brother. It is vicious, but there is hope, yet.

Deste is much changed - I have not gotten the chance to speak to him for many long years. Lenore and Grandmother have had the most recent contact with him...well, contact within the family, at least. My little sister met him by mistake, apparently when he was 'on a job' (I highly disapprove of what his former crimes entailed, though I believe there is more to his reasoning to his becoming a thief than by complete free choice). She says that he has become very quiet and brooding...though still retains his temper.

She is in every way right. And yet, though he is as sultry as his older brother, he seems also to be very...content of spirit. That is something very heartening to see. I believe it to be the work of who Dante and I are going to meet, Deste's very reason for wanting to return to this country to the south of our home. She must be a very special person, indeed.

I hear both negative and positive things from Lenore, who has apparently met this Iris Nefretiri. Apparently, the male sibling is very...unpleasant, to put it mildly, and the mother a bit air-headed. But, Lenore has made compliments to the father, and to Iris herself - temperamental, perceptive, intelligent. Perhaps a bit spoiled (Deste described her as being a favorite object of his to steal from...as strange as that sounds), but Lenore's highest compliment of "passionate" worked its way into her thoughts on Iris.

I do believe that my sister dislikes this woman, though, for what inadvertently happened to Deste when he got involved with her. I have heard many things regarding that....So I do not know what to make of this woman, yet. I hope to be able to receive her without any bias.

Hm...I wonder if I will be able to get one of these lovely griffins. They are so very charming! Kalei is an absolute darling - I think Deste dislikes my 'spoiling' of him, but I can't help it. Lenore has said that she herself has a creature, of a slightly different breed than Deste's brown and gray male. I look forward to seeing more - they are more common in the south, I have been told.

We are off again.

User ImageMany things have changed.

We are engaged to marry. I don't believe she realized what was going on until right before I asked her father. Silly girl...I do love her, though.

My brother insists I keep my hair the natural color. Considering that I will no longer be hunting at night, this shouldn't be a problem, merely irritating. The sudden change after years of habit takes adjustment. I must adjust to many things, in truth. Some of these I wish didn't happen, but everything has a price.

Kalei is large enough for me to ride, now. He seems almost happy that he can bear me in flight. Upon observation, I noticed that, in terms of sheer size and muscle, my bird is undersized. I do not know if he will keep growing or not, but he is fast - speed over brute force is a high advantage.

He comes with me everywhere now, the griffin does. We have many 'reprimands' to pay, and I think that if Kalei weren't there to keep me from acting on impulse, I might once again be put on trial for murder.

Iris has acquired a few new ones, besides Ma'at. There was the egg before I left, and when I returned, a black female was in its place. And then a red-striped creature, already full grown. Sekhmet and Elrok, she calls them. I believe Dante is looking to buy a griffin of similar coloration to Elrok.

All this occurred quite a few months ago, actually. At present, I have few 'official' duties to do, and tend to spend free time much in the same way as before - in solitude. There are some days where I stay with her for the afternoon into the evening, though.

And then, one night when I went down to the market district, I happened to run into Tri....Well, she's calling herself 'Shane' now. Odd, but it works. She...has changed drastically; I hardly recognized her, except for the insistence on yelling "princeling" in my direction before dashing over. I can't say whether or not it is a good thing that she is here - in all honesty, I'd rather not deal with her irritating ways - but it is good to know that she escaped him.

Shane is working at a bar on the south side of the city, and looks to be doing well. She has acquired a griffin - how, I will not ask - and he is a rather large creature, black with blue-tinged wings. She calls him Zephan.

Surprisingly, I find myself trailing to the bar where Shane works frequently. It is not so much that I drink - God forbid I get drunk and then have her do to me whatever her insane mind comes up with - but that, even if she is annoying, Shane understands what I mean when I say I lost that which was most precious to me.

Something seems wrong, even in all this peace. Iris awoke from a nightmare a few nights ago. She was shaking and breaking out in sweat - at first I thought she might be sick, but when she suddenly screamed my name....It reminds me of a warning Shane gave to me, that my public fiasco left my tracks very easy to follow.

I do not know if the nightmare is related to any of it. Magic does not seem to run in Iris' family any longer, but she comes from a line of priests. But even so, I tend not to put much faith into those kinds of visions.

She stayed very close to me for the rest of the night, though I could tell that she did not sleep again.

I will have to assure her that Shane would not betray me.

-Deste

P.S. An acquaintance of Iris' seems to be connected to the House of Roses. I wonder how this will play out...

User ImageDoes infidelity really plague my immediate family?

Well, in any case, it is established fact that my father had his share of sexual affairs, the end product being that favorite little brother of mine - and I don't lie when I say I'm fond of Deste. Some believe that I would hold a grudge against him, but really...what can a four-year-old understand about infidelity? When I was young, I was ecstatic to have a sibling to play with.

Anyway, back to the topic the original sentence of this entry; I may soon be acquiring a future in-law. A male who may soon be the heir to the Rosaylen House. I have few details as of yet, however. So, I will talk about an old journal I found lying in the back shelves of Norene's grandmother's library. The owner is listed as a one "Darius Esterylen."

Let's see what father has to say in the days of his youth.

I do not know how it happened. Perhaps, I do not wish to, in order to escape the blame.

Anniea is often very ill (though Dante is a very strong and healthy child, thank goodness), and her dear friend, Kestra of House Rosaylen, stays with her and nurses her often.

The two women are exceptional, each in their own right. I question my character, when they are involved. It is not that I do not like Anniea...I just hope that I will not have to force my son, any of my children, into an arranged marriage.

Hm....haha, father, you've taken away some of my character now. I'm the product of political stability and not love, now?

My little brother seems to be more and more the legitimate one these days. But at least I can pride myself on being rather more liked.

[The top portion of the page looks, literally, as though someone has been stabbing the page with a pen and then scribbling on it repeatedly. As such, it is an illegible mess of...well, ink. A few inches below, however, an entry begins...]

F~~~~~~~!

Hellspawn fire brimstone 'n all s**t! Sem here!

[More illegible scribbles and ink blots...]

Princeling got cut up. Not as bad as I seen 'im but bad 'nuff. Got Iris out tho, good since 'Sem has somethin' planned.

Zeph got all bit up too guess by this hellbeast (not Sem) griffin? He'll be fine, tho, just needs lotsa rest, like Princeling.

Fun night before Hell in a Nutshell (new drink name!) came round. Cept most people got no guts to order any mixes. SOMEONE ORDERED WATER AT A FANCY ALCOHOL BAR THING UGH!

[And yet again, more scrawls and stabs...]

Cutting off business for a while need to set up new prospects. Might continue collecting/trading/selling when building done.

Think I'll call it somethin' with a Penguin. Most dunno what a penguin is! Could be fun!

Needa take Princeling his meds now.

User ImageWe have just acquired some interesting news...

I appear to have a brother, a year younger than I, and one older than Lenore.

Grandmother is strained. King Darius' rule has long been blackened by the scandal of adultery, and another case of it, especially one within a House on his Council, may very well further the political unrest in Albion. Paralene's shadowy watch over our small country has also grown - the good relations with them have been strained since the late Queen Anniea's passing, and Darius' remarriage to Deste's mother, Kestra.

Dante, son as he is to Anniea and thus half Paralenian nobility, has been working to save what ties of good favor Albion has with the Empire, and I believe some good will come from his efforts. He is well-liked, my prince.

But I deviate from the original point of interest....I am returning to Nemoren and Xuan city, with Dante, to meet my new sibling.

Lenore sounded furious. Her letter exclaimed that much. Deste, however, suspects unlawful conduct...considering it is he who says it, perhaps this issue will not be as difficult as it now seems.

I do not think Grandmother would allow heirship to our House to pass along to just anyone, particularly not a man who has suddenly appeared with claims of being of the Rose. But we shall see...it is the Law of Albion that royal houses cannot be passed on to women, so long as a male line survives. But I believe that, despite misgivings, Lenore has earned every right to become the head of our household, in due time.

It may just be sisterly affection talking...I must hold my reservations for my new brother. Malcolm is his name.
