Human beings have capacities for both good and evil deeds. Even in the most sordid person there is something that is pure and even in the most kindly person there are the occasional problems.

I agree with MOST of that... that everyone has both the ability for good and evil... However, I do not feel that everyone exercises that ability for both purposes... The most evil person does not necessarily have to be good, only to have the capacity to do so... However, just because one CAN do good, doesn't mean that they possess that characteristic... The reverse would also be true...
However, those are extremes, and most people, if not all, don't fall perfectly into either category. So, for the most part, in theory I must disagree with your statement, but in practicality, you're more than likely right...
Also, I would like to note that although one may have hope for redemption, doesn't mean that they will take it. Everyone that can be considered "evil" is so by their own choice, and most will never realize compassion... most...
And I think you meant that you were an "atheist"... right? o.O( )
