I'm currently living in Japan, where I was only planning to stay three months, but recently I've been able to extend my period of stay so that I can study for another semester. However I only brought three months worth of medicine, and my parents have no way to legally ship medicine over here because neither my doctor nor my pharmacist ship to Japan. How would I get prescriptions refilled in Japan? Is it even possible? Are the generic names the same? I especially need it for my allergy medicine, because even one day without it and I become an itchy, sniveling mess. Please help if you can.

Well, if you're on a student visa, you should have health insurance. Even if you don't, health care in Japan is pretty inexpensive and reliable. Try a hospital as opposed to a clinic, though, since they'll be more likely to understand English and will run more smoothly.

Anyway, first of all, I would speak to the director of your study program, if possible. He or she would know better than I would.

Second, they should understand the generic names, I'm pretty sure. Even if they're not the same, they may have heard of the American names, and some are similar anyway. The antibiotics I got had a similar-sounding name as some American antibiotics.

Third, you might not be able to get the medicine you need if it has pseudoepinephrine. (It's illegal in Japan.)

Lastly, I'm not sure if you can get your prescriptions refilled... but you can get a new prescription for sure. I'd probably just do that.
