Character information, background, etc.
Character Name: Amato Yanez
Height: 5'4"
Weight: 135lbs
Character Appearance (Human): Amato is a member of a tribe of Venezuelan indigenous people known as the Warao. Like the rest of his people, he has thick black hair, dark eyes, and very brown skin. He is a teenager of seventeen, but all the time he is used to spending outdoors has aready begun to give him a slightly weathered complexion. Between a sufficient-but-not-excessive diet, and the the manual work he is used to doing, Amato is muscular but still fairly slender; his biggest muscles in his shoulders and upper back developed from all the paddling Amato does in canoes to get around.
Clothing-wise, he is not exactly in loincloths and animal hides, but Amato also does not have access to the cutting edge of trends. He wears a pair of dark indigo blue jeans, which are well-worn and muddy around the bottoms, but miraculously lack holes. Amato also has a loose short-sleeved shirt that he almost always wears open in the front. It is blue and patterned with tropical flowers, like a hand-me-down tourist shirt, but the once-bright colors have faded somewhat.
Character Personality: Having been brought up in a very small community in a rural environment, Amato is a somewhat laid-back sort of person when it comes to leisure time. He is still playful even though he is nearly an adult, and would have no qualms at all with splashing around with children much younger than himself in the rivers at home. To him, play is all part of being a child, and as he is still a child, he is practically expected to do so.
Still, he is growing up, and therefore feels a decent amount of responsibility. Or, he is supposed to, anyway. Amato is respectful of his elders, and generally dutiful, but he enjoys exploring even more, and is therefore prone to occasionally neglect chores and jobs after getting distracted by something interesting and far-off. His world is small, but the modernized world is all around it, and promises to be huge - while Amato's parents may be content to keep their worldview as small and managable as possible, Amato himself grows more and more curious about the wider picture around himself and his people.
Amato also feels a need to be sure of his place in the world. Taunts and the like generally do not fluster him unless they are directed specifically at his abilities. He will never back down from a challange, and tends to get quite heated when his talents and skills are insulted. He takes pride in his independence in particular - offering to help him rarely goes over well if he is determined to do things on his own.
Socially, Amato is used to a small, close-knit network of people. If thrust onto the island, he would definitely be intimidated by the large numbers of strangers, but would almost definitely start working on building up close relationships with those he felt he would be able to blend with. He is not shy so much as largely unused to being with people he does not know.
Interests: Amato is a wanderer at heart, and natually curious. His is not a scientific curiousity, though - he has no desire to pick the world apart and analyze it because he is not used to this way of thinking. He takes in the big picture, and looks at how each part fits into the whole.
Fears: He may come across as fearless at first, especially in the environment of the island, because Amato is extremely confident in his abilities to survive the wilderness. Washing up on an unfamiliar shore is not something that would drive him to panic. The presence of extremly modern aspects would give him pause, however. Though he is interested in finding out about modern conveniences, he also carries a slight mistrust of them as well, stemming from his peoples' recent conflicts with oil drilling companies. Though Amato himself was not directly involved in the debates and the efforts to protect Warao land, some other members of his community were, and news spreads quickly among his closely-knit tribe.
Unfamiliar animals on the island will likely frighten Amato. He is used to a certain set of animals, and while he is not completely ignorant of more famous animals of other continents such as lions and tigers, actually seeing one would be an experience.
Character Background: Amato grew up in relatively normal conditions for his people. He spent the vast majority of his time in the out-of-doors and on the water. Sticking with the general consensus that people of his tribe learn to paddle canoes before they learn to walk, Amato enjoyed exploring the channels and rivers around his home in the Orinoco River Delta.
His tribe is, of course, not completely separated from the modernized world, however. He has seen oil surveying boats come to his people's land with more and more frequency, and his father is an activist against the idea of drilling in the area. Amato has also had some experience with the modern medical system. His younger sister Elena, like many people in his tribe, developed tuberculosis, and was fortunate enough to be taken to the local hospital, a few hours up-river by canoe, for treatment. She is just a toddler of five years old, however, and was not in the best of condition when Amato disappeared. But before Amato left on the journey that found him on Moreau's island, he visited her regularly with his family.
Elena's worsening condition has been leaving Amato and his parents with less and less faith in modern medicine, and so they themselves rely on their tribe's medicine man for treatment of their own minor ills. Amato himself has latent tuberculosis, but it has not manifested symptoms of any kind in him yet. There is always the chance that it will develop into the full infection in him, but since it has not yet, he is unaware of it.
Though he has had fairly little formal schooling, Amato has learned a lot from his parents and the other members of his tribe about living where and how they do. He has the skills to survive on his own in the woods for at least a little while, and he also has some knowledge of basketweaving, the handicraft for which his people are known. The Warao also make fine dugout canoes, but Amato is relatively new to this craft. It should be noted that, while Amato can communicate in Spanish, he knows very little, if any, English.
Amato's parents grant him a good amount of freedom, knowing that it is near impossible to keep the boy close to home considering his wanderlust and the ease of transportation in the delta. He is an obedient enough son, helping with chores when his parents require it of him, provided he is not distracted by a potential adventure; as soon as his tasks are done, he is allowed to roam off on his own. It is not unusual for him to spend nights out by himself, but he is never gone for more than a day....
How does your Character get to/why was your character chosen for the Island?: One of Amato's many ventures took him out onto the ocean. It was not the first time he had been there, but it was the first time he had gone so far. They sky had looked calm, save for some clouds, so Amato packed some food and fresh water and set out, planning to be gone for no more than a day and a night.
It was a long way to Bermuda from the coat of Venezuela, but some storms are just fast like that. Though Amato would not recall much, if any, of the unplanned portion of his journey, he would likely have not made it all the way to the island on his own before being spotted by the techs and fetched from the ocean by helicopter.

The CritterI really honestly have no preference of creature for Amato, but I have been questing with some sort of hummingbird in mind. If Amato ends up washing up on the beach randomly, Doctor Moreau would have no way of knowing exactly where he comes from, and would not be able to pick something native to Amato's homeland, necessarily. I have been planning on a bird for Amato, because birds in general are sacred to the Warao, as they figure into their creation story. A divine hunter was walking through the clouds, shooting down birds as his prey. As they fell, the birds broke through the clouds, allowing the hunter to see down to the then-uninhabited and pristine land below. Surprised by the land's beauty, the hunter moved down to the earth, and began a new life there. The Long-billed Starthroat - Heliomaster longirostrisThe original bird in my first entry for Amato. This bird is native to Venezuela, as well as Central America, northeastern South America, and the island of Trinidad. They inhabit forests, and sometimes venture into gardens. The birds are about 10cm long, and, like other hummingbirds, feed on nectar and the occasional insect. Rufous-tailed Hummingbird - Amazilia tzacatlHummingbird from my Valentine's Day contest entry. This hummingbird lives in Mexico and the rest of Central America, and northern South America, in Ecuador, Colombia, and parts of Venezuela. It also lives in forests, but can also be found in open areas, scrubland, and coffee plantations. Though it is slightly larger than the starthroat, it eats a similar diet of nectar and insects. The males are also known to be extremely territorial, driving hummingbirds of all species, and sometimes even other larger birds, and insects, away from choice flower patches. An interesting tidbit: I found a website a while back that had conversions that would allow you to figure out how many Calories would be required for someone of human weight with the metabolism of a hummingbird (( I will link this when I find it again >>; )). A hummingbird of Amato's weight would need to eat nearly 200,000 Calories a day. Of course, his bones would hollow out as he changed, making him lighter, but the amount he would need to consume would still be immense. Maybe Moreau could use him to test some kind of new energy drink? =P Original images saved from http://www.avesphoto.com/

The WaraoThe Warao are an indigenous people who live in eastern Venezuela in the Orinoco River Delta. Their name translates to "the boat people", because of their primary mode of transportation. In fact, it is said that Warao children learn to paddle a boat before they learn to walk. Not long after Christopher Colombus discovered the Orinoco, the Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda ventured upstream and first encountered the Warao people. Upon seeing their huts built on stilts, and their many boats for navigating between them, he named the land Venezuela, meaning "Little Venice", as the sight reminded him of the Italian city. Currently, the Warao still live in the Orinoco Delta. While they still hold to many of their traditional beliefs, and still travel around their lands by boat, the modern world is encroaching more and more on their lifestyle. For example, Britian and the United States have taken recent interest in drilling for oil in the Delta and just offshore, which has prompted many Warao to petition against it in order to protect their homeland. On the other hand, tourist agencies also offer boating tours through the Orinoco, and the opportunity to spend time with the Warao and to learn about their customs and traditions. The tribe is particularly well-known for its durable woven baskets and bowls. http://www.gasandoil.com/goc/news/ntl71601.htmhttp://www.venezuelanalysis.com/articles.php?artno=1297http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warao

A Little Info on TuberculosisTuberculosis is unfortunately common among the Warao people right now. Lack of easy access to health care makes this disease a problem for the people infected with it, but there are some humanitarian efforts to help treat and prevent the disease in the Orinoco delta. Amato's sister has active tuberculosis, and Amato himself is infected, but his is currently latent, meaning he is not contagious, nor does he express any symptoms. If he gets to the island, it will definitely not be with the intent of curing his disease. It is accurate for him to have it, and I think it could be useful as a plot point somehow eventually, but it is not the central basis of his character or his means of getting on the island. Still, here is some more information. The World Health Organization currently estimates that about one third of the entire world's population is infected with tuberculosis. Not all of these people display symptoms, however. The bacteria that causes TB is capable of lying dormant for long periods of time, so that it can remain a threat even in people who have immune systems capable of keeping the bacteria at bay. It can become active at any time, generally in situations where the infected person's immune system becomes compromised. TB usually affects the lungs, causing tiredness, fever, coughing, and chest pain. Coughing often produces blood. Tuberculosis can also cause paling of the skin and weight loss, which is why it is sometimes called the wasting disease. It is very contagious, and can spread easily through the air by way of coughs and sneezes. Amato does not know for sure that he is infected, but Moreau's medical technology would be more than enough to test with certainty. The boy's own knowledge is a bit more limited in terms of the precise medical terms, but he cares a lot for his sister, and knows first-hand what tuberculosis has done to her outwardly. http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs104/en/index.htmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuberculosis

What Animal Serum do you want?: Regular morphic; long-billed starthroat (( Heliomaster longirostris ))
Describe your ideal 100% appearance: Amato's hair would remain black, but would now bear an iridescent sheen in green with small bits of purple mixed in. His nose and mouth would trasnform into the long pointed beak of the starthroat, making it much more difficult, but not fully impossible, for him to speak. He would have white spots behind his dark eyes, and stripes of white feathers running down his cheeks and neck down to cover his chest. The feathers on his throat would be a deep shimering purple. Though Amato would be closer to the size of a human toddler than the hummingbird itself, his legs would be far too short to be effective for walking in any capacity; instead, his arms would have become wings large enough to carry him about the island. To aid him in flight, Amato would also have the starthroat's tail, deep emerald green like his wings, and tipped with white.
Why this animal/plant for your character?: The creation myth of the Warao people involves birds and their presence in the heavens. In addition, the long-billed starthroat is native to Amato's homeland. Moreau might consider it the only way to get through to the largely-traditional tribesboy, using an animal he knows; Amato would likely consider it nothing short of a blessing or miracle.
What do you think really makes this concept? Why you?: Amato comes from a very different background; while he is a fairly normal teenager personality-wise, just trying to see the world and find his place in it, the notions he grew up with that set him apart from other islanders. His beliefs are built upon the traditions of his people, far moreso than science. His people are neither completely isolated nor primitive, but as a whole, their tradition is not something they are willing to surrender without a fight to modernization and more modern thinking. He may or may not choose to learn or to believe in what happens to him on the island from the scientific standpoint. Amato's own beliefs would likely be a much more comforting answer anyway - he will likely be able to enjoy it.
PROMPT: ((This RP prompt does NOT need to fit into your canon backstory, this is a sample of your RP)) A
Everything felt like a dream. Like one of those those dreams that was not being dremt correctly, when things are supposed to feel like something, but you know they are not, and that everything around you is all made of dream. Amato thought the sun, the sand beneath his feet, the water that occasionally lapped around his ankles, all of it felt like dream.
This place looked nothing like the delta where he had grown up, nor the city where he went from time to time to visit his sister Elena in the hospital.
Come to think of it, the building in the far off distance looked kind of like the hospital. Perhaps he should head there? Amato knew for a fact that it was not the hospital he had seen before, but it was a landmark, and that was always a start. Already, the boy could feel his curiousity starting to kick in over the numb feeling of confusion. What was over there?
He took several more steps along the beach, and was suddenly assaulted by two scents that jolted him to alertness. One of them was obvious - there was something dead nearby. Dead, and recently so, because it did not smell like it was in the stages of decay yet. And mixed in with it, there was the faintest hint of alcohol.
Looking around, Amato's eyes fell on the carcass of a boar, and instantly he felt like a fish in the shadow of a heron. It was dead and something had killed it. Unable to stop himself, he walked towards it slowly, but glanced around wildly, at the trees to the side in particular, for any sign of what might have slain the animal. Was the predator watching him? Amato fumbled for his switchblade, thankful he had not lost it in washing ashore.
It would not open. It was jammed with sand. Amato reversed direction, and noticed a small structure nearby. He bolted for that, shaking the closed switchblade in a vain effort to unjam the blade. He would have felt so much safer with something sharp in his hands right now.
Once in the relative safety of the structure, Amato glanced back outside at the dead animal. His chest still heaving from the feeling of panic before, his stomach was now starting to take over. There was a dead animal and he realized he was starving.
Fuego! Haz un fuego y cocinalo. Necesitas comer. his stomach was trying to tell him. It was quite convincing, too. He promised it he would consider as soon as he had his blade ready. His belly grumbled a reply, and Amato knocked the switchblade against the floor of the structure to try to help get the damp sand out of it.
He kept no track of how much time it took him to get the blade out, but it seemed long enough to assume that, if whatever had killed the boar was planning on eating it, it would have already come. Reassured but still a bit shakey, Amato stood slowly.
He was just placing his hand on the weathered wooden counter behind him when his elbow bumped something. The cool smoothness of whatever he had knocked surprised him, and in whirling around to see what was there, he inadvertantly tipped the brown glass bottle onto the floor, where it shattered, leaving its contents all over the floor and Amato's feet and pant leg.
Cerveza? Por que? Amato was familiar enough with the liquid now all over his leg, since there were a fair number of people in his tribe who drank beer. The boy himself had never tried it, but, upon examining the areas around the counter, there were a few more bottles of the stuff that looked unopened.
Amato took one on the logic that having a bottle would be more useful than not having one.
He turned his attention again to the dead boar, switchblade still brandished. It looked fresh enough, but there were flies just starting to find it. He would have to go into the forest to get some wood, and then hope he could start a fire quickly. If he took too long, the meat would be no good, and to get sick out here all by himself with no obvious way home would mean death. Amato knew he would have to work fast. Quote: Entrants: Shiaree and Asahi Kumoru Character Names: Serafina Luis and Amato Yanez Relation: Best friends/Spiritually connected Serum(s): The Rufous-tailed hummingbird (( Amazilia tzacatl )) (Amato) and the Platypus ((Ornithorhynchus anatinus)) (Sera) Brief Backstories
Amato is a member of a tribe of Venezuelan indigenous people known as the Warao. He grew up in relatively normal conditions for his people, meaning he spent the vast majority of his time in the out-of-doors and on the water. Sticking with the general consensus that people of his tribe learn to paddle canoes before they learn to walk, Amato enjoyed exploring the channels and rivers around his home in the Orinoco River Delta. He is seventeen years old, and has begun to take more adult responsibilities within his tribe, but for the present, he is still granted time to play like a child. His community is close-knit and traditional, but they are not completely ignorant of the modern world - Amato's young sister Elena was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment, and Amato makes frequent visits to the city to see her. His trips are often a day or longer, just because he possesses a certain wanderlust and curiousity that generally take him all over before finally reaching his destination.
Serafina is a member of a rather different tribe of Venezuelan indigenous people. Hers are called the Piaroa. Her people are strong believers in both peaceful attitudes and individual autonomy. They are often described as one of few truly successful peaceful and anarchist societies. Children are not punished with violence, but are taught from a young age that violence and anger are bad. People are encouraged through learning and the lack of violent examples of behaviour to continue their peaceful way of life. They are also allowed the freedom to do pretty much anything they please within those boundaries. Because of this, Sera herself is allowed to run about as much as she pleases-- and she does please. She has a very active imagination and enjoys wandering about the forests acting out different scenarios.
Fate (or the spirits, as they believe) brought the two of them together by chance because of their shared love of wandering. It worked out for the best, though in the beginning their friendship was rocky due to language barriers. Eventually they both learned Spanish and were able to communicate better. They gave each other something both desperately needed-- she gave him a sense of fun, and he gave her a hint of responsibility. They became quite quickly the best of friends and madcap hijinks were to be had by all for many moons.
One day Amato and Sera decided to head off on their own to visit with Elena in their canoe. Unfortunately, the waters are dangerous and there was an incident as they reached the point where they would have to disembark and walk to the city. Amato was attacked by a Orinoco Caiman. He was injured enough that when Serafina got him to the city, it was decided he would require a blood transfusion. As luck (and the spirits, according to both) would have it, Serfina herself was a match, and the transfusion took place as soon as they'd sorted out all the important details.
From then on, the two felt that they were spiritually connected by the blood they shared, as well as the fact that the spirits had led them together. Amato's parents were concerned, however, about the incident, and put a lot more restrictions on how often he was allowed to go see Sera. With nothing to do in the times when he wasn't allowed out, the girl focused on becoming a nurse at the hospital so that she might possibly help Elena without having to do as much work as it'd take to become a full-out doctor.
What is it about these people that would make Feral Labs want to bring them on together?
The reason why he might bring them at all gives a bit of insight to this, so I'm going to go into that a bit.
Moreau had some platypus DNA lying around, and he had been wondering what exactly he could do with it. Platypi are, after all, God's joke; there had to be some interesting experiment he could carry out with it.
Then he got to wondering how a pair of people might react if one of them turned into a very familiar animal, and the other into something completely alien. Intrigued, the doctor went through his files - perhaps there was someone in some remote corner of the world who had never seen a platypus before. After some searching, Moreau came across the fairly recent files of two young Venezuelan natives who seemed likely candidates. They were from different tribes, though, so he was not sure if they could be brought together, but really, living on the outskirts of civilization as they were, Moreau figured it not too difficult to pick up two people who had never heard of the strange Australian mammal.
While his lackeys went to search for Amato, or Serafina, or both, Moreau set about looking for a good second serum for the other of the pair. Something familiar, and that would not be likely to eat his other subject before he could gather enough data in the event their relationship deteriorated faster than expected....
