Yes, a lot of preteens want to sit in the front seat of the car. But how do you determine when they're ready? Different parents have different rules, but the appropriate age that a child has to be to sit up front is 12. But, the average weight for a twelve year old these days is anywhere from 50 to 110 pounds. Now that's a big difference! So, if a 12 year old kid who weighs 50 pounds sits up front and there's a car accident, how are they to be safe? I think that it more depends on weight. Your parents are in charge, of course, but what if there was a car accident? That string bean of a twelve year old would probably die. But, if they weighed at least 80, 90, or 100 pounds, it would be easy to say they're probably safe.
Discuss: -Does age or weight matter more when determining when you can sit up front? -What would a good weight/age be? -How safe are cars for kids?

I've never heard of an age limit here... I think it should just be up to the parents where the child sits. I know I dat in the front of the car when I was five or six, and I didn't die... sweatdrop

I think more important than weight is heigth. Most cars have a passenger side airbag. The problem with shorter children is that they may suffocate when the air bag goes off. I don't know what the required height requirement is (made by car manufacturers) but I would think 5 feet should be okay. Discuss!

I think it depends more on weight and height than age.

It is mostly dependable on weight AND height. Being 12, well that makes them mature enough to sit in the front seat, but they should at least weigh 90 lbs. Also height comes into play, as you know for children, you have to put them in a car seat until they are 4 feet 9 inches, or a certain weight limit. So I think, age, height, and weight all come into play when you are talking about the front seat. It all just depends on the parents' comfort zone.

Ok, well, my brother just turned 12 and he weighs 166 just because of how tall he is! I'm 14 and I weigh 128 and I'm 5'9. I'm not for sure how tall he is, but he is a good bit taller than me! So, I think it should depend on weight...
