"Why does it have be soooo cold, Mumma bat?!" Anya whined as she dragged her feet on the sidewalk. She really didn't like this walking-thing, especially if it involded wearing a scratchy, smelly coat.
"Because..." Lizz replied, trying to think of if she should go with the right answer or the one Anya would accept.
" The Sun decides to take a holiday to Flordia for the winter where he sips margaritas and umm.... sleeps all day." She chose the later.
It was just hitting noon when Lizz had decided to take Anya out for some well needed shopping. They had just made it to the corner where the bend greeted the market street. The air seemed to be teasing then, Lizz thought. First snapping at their noses and then sending waves of aromas filled to the brim with iced cinnamon sugar cookies or french vanilla lattes.
The market street was bustled with people of all ages. Everyone seemed to have the same idea as Lizz. No matter, the pair continued to walk down the worn sidewalk.
"So what happens when Moona-Pop shows up?"
"They have tea party."
The afternoon seemed to drift on by sweetly until it was just about time to head back home.
"Just let me order a coffee and then we are home, I swear!"
Lizz said, as the two walked into the cafe. But Anya could see that the line was anything but short. And rather waiting for her mother to finish satisfying her coffee fix, she slipped out of the door and into the crowd. She had no doubt that she could find her way home, or at least something more exciting than waiting.

"And UP!" Jade had felt amazed at the rate Nikolai'd grown, and lifting the little boy up high in the air over her head as they went down the street. He still didn't speak yet, but she knew he cared about her by the bright smile on his face. Holding the boy in her arms, Jade didn't look like she was about to let him use his legs on the cold ground, even if he could walk now.
Wearing a parka of dark blue with white fluff around the hood, hem and sleeves, Nikolai was bundled up nice and warm for the cold weather. The parka had two holes in the back where his tiny wings poked out, only to be hidden inside plaid gloves. It looked very funny, but at least there was no part of Jade's little boy that faced the cold except his face. Hugging Jade around her neck, he smiled brightly as he held on tight.
"There's my boy..." Smiling fondly, she didn't notice the pair ahead of her. It seemed like her entire world revolved around the little boy in her care.

The crowd rushed forward around Anya, never thinking to look down at the zombie-angel child. She couldn't see above the towering adults, couldn't breathe while they buried her. The pressure was suffacating. She couldn't take the crowd all alone. Maybe it wasn't a good idea to leave Mama Bat back at the cafe.
Pushing through the legs of the shoppers she ran across the sidewalk and accidently rammed into a stranger.

Jade clung to Nikolai as she was bumped into, blinking down in surprise at the little girl. "Oh, hello..." For some reason, the little girl gave her a feeling of unease. She didn't know why, but something was definately... creepy about this child. "Are you lost?"
The little boy held snug in his guardian's arms waved a gloved hand at Anya. He said not a word, but still innocently smiled at her.

Anya's muddy blue eyes glanced up at the stranger and the smiling boy. She wasn't exactly sure how to handle them, as they were the first others that had spoke to her besides Mumma Bat. They were exceptionally taller than her, that's for sure.
"Are you a magical totem pole?" she asked innocently, though it may have came out as a sarcastic remark. She thought totem poles didn't talk, unless the one on Mumma Bat's key chain was a mute.
But either way, she decided there was something magical about the bunch, and she couldn't quite place it, until she spotted a pair of mittens poking out of the boy's back. She eyed them curiously as she wiggled her wings underneath the scratchy coat.
"I'm not lost, it's just those sky eatting buildings are in the way.." she muttered, her curls picking up in the wind.

That decided it; this kid was mental. "Totem poles? Sky eating buildings? Dear, where was your Mommy last?" Perhaps she should find a police officer who could help. Though, before she could do very much, Nikolai wiggled to be put down and Jade reluctantly obliged.
Once on the ground, Nikolai took his mother's hand and reached out to grasp Anya's. The smile never left his face, and tried to tug them both through the crowd towards the nearest shop. Something smelled good! That's all he needed to know.
Assuming that Nikolai was using some sort of Herald power, Jade followed after as they entered into the coffee shop. Completely unbeknownst to her that the child's actions were based on smelling the hot chocolate and warm cakes in the shop.

Anya stiffen as Nikolai gently tugged both her and his Totem Mama through the crowd. Her fear was sudden but it dispersed as quickly as it came once she emerged from the crowd with the two.
"Ahh! Mumma Bat is in here!" she said, pointing as the walked in. The cafe seemed to be just quieting down. She pointed to an empty spot next to the window to Nikolai. Sunlight poured through the glass, flooding onto the chairs. There was no doubt in her mind that they'd be warm.
It was then Lizz emerged from the line, coffee in hand.
"Oh! Anya it looks like you made friends."
She smiled as she walked over, never really realizing that Anya even left the shop.

"My... is this your little girl? She certainly has quite an imagination." Jade said with a sheepish smile, coming to walk over to Lizz with Nikolai in hand. Picking up the small child, she held him tight.
One of the gloves fell off as Jade picked him up, and Nikolai reached to the floor and opened and closed a hand in a child-like manner. Refusing to say a single word to anyone.

"Yeah," Lizz laughed, "Sometimes it's hard to understand what Anya understands."
"I'm not an big-head alien." Anya replied, sticking her tongue out at the two adults. She was only describing what she saw. It wasn't her fault that others couldn't comprehend her thoughts.
"You understand me, don't you?" she asked the tiny boy in the totem pole's arms. Noticing his glove landing on the cafe's tile, she picked it up. She held it high above her head for the boy to grab, but refused to make an attempt to stretch the extra inch.

"Yes, quite." The woman gave a small smile. "Oh! I'm terribly sorry... I'm Jade, and this is Nikolai. Nice to meet you." She shifted Nikolai into the crook of one arm, and held out her other hand to Lizz.
The little boy smiled and leaned out to get his wing-warmer. Holding onto Jade's jacket collar with one hand, the other managed to reach out far enough to catch hold of the mitten. He didn't say his thanks, but the bright smile on his face seemed to say it for him.

"Jade.. I'm Lizz, and this little demon is Anya."
Lizz shook Jade's hand, and then smiled at Nikolai. She reached out her hand for him to shake as well.
"Nikolai, I'm Lizz. Anya says Hii too."
"Did I?" Anya asked. It may of came out sarcastically, but she really couldn't remember if she had said hello or not. What if.. the hello just sneaked out?! Gasping, she covered her mouth. She'd have to watch for those escaping Hello's for now on.
"Hello Hello Jade and Nikolai!" she mumbled through closed fingers.

Giggling at the cuteness of the girl, Jade shook Lizz's hand before offering a hand to Anya. "Nice to meet you dear. Anya's such a pretty name."
Surprised at the offered hand, Nikolai placed his mitten in it with the assumption that she was going to help him get it back on his wing.
