I have a question that may seem a bit odd in the asking, but its been a long debate with my mother.

I have what I believe to be a memory.

She says its a dream.

Issue #1
It goes a bit like this. Years ago I had a great-great-grandmother who was a blackfoot indian. Before she died I paid her a visit, sat with her and spoke with her at length. When the visit was over she gave us a blanket she had made.

My mother says that it didnt happen, that although the description of the woman was exact and the blanket has been in our family for some years now, that I dreamed it...she was shocked that I had ever met my father's ancestor.

Issue #2

My grandmother passed away when I was young and I remember her funeral. My mother has made a point of never letting us see the photos that were taken there, and I remember the funeral, what my sister and I were wearing there, and what my grandmother had worn. When I made mention of this to my mother she professed that we (my sister and I) had remained home and had not been there at all. How is this possible? She says it was a dream, but I say its memory. So is either possible?

it may very well be such a lucid dream that you see it as a memory. this is also a form of 'seeing' in psychic terms...I forget exactly what it is called, but it is an ability. You gathered information from the blanket through your senses and was able to give a great detail about the people involved. I wish I could remember what that is called...there are actually a few people who can touch an item and tell you almost everything about the item. where it came from, emotional ties to it, etc. its quite interesting.

the second one, may be your body coping with the loss of your grandmother. Some minds create an experience that seem so real that we take it as memory, although it may have never happened.

I've never seen myself as having much of a gift beyond that of empathy, which tends to be more of a curse than a gift honestly, let alone much of a seeing gift. But then again, I was much calmer back then.

Both are possible, as well as a few other things

There is something known as "false memories". They are created by bits and pieces of information and faded memories that some how merge to create a workable memory/experience that may not have truely occured or possibly have been exagerated. A psychologist might try to claim that you may have heard discussions, filled in a few blanks with personal knowledge and then your imagination was able to put everything together in a way that your conscious mind would accept. It is very easy for these memories to be created, especially if the events occured when you were small and enough time has passed for the information to merge. Because of the way the information was processed, these memories will seem very real, even though it may not be based on an actual event.

Or, as may sometimes occure to adults as they get older, their memory fades a bit, and some details might get omitted as time passes. You very well could have been there, but because you were not the main focus at the time, your presence may not be recognized.

Some other suggestions that are not as logical (but apropriate for the guild) would be "shared body experience" where you may have seen events through anothers eyes, telepathy, distant sight, or regressions.

The only way to know for sure what they are, is to continue to investigate and ask questions. Look at available pictures, your age and compare time lines with what informatin you can determine from the memory. Find out when aproximatly the blanket came into your family, and how. The same goes for the funeral.

I see, well I told my mother of the memory when I was a teenager, and she thought it was very strange since she had no knowledge that I had ever met my father's grandmother, but she had met the woman once or twice, and told me the description that I had given the woman was true. And of course the entire memory seemed based around the blanket that she would eventually give us.

I was also about the same age when I told her of the memory of the funeral. She didnt show me the photographs until after I questioned her about the memory. She told me that she had kept us home, although I could recall things that weren't necessarily in the photographs, as well as the dresses that my sister and I wore. But I don't know, and that's a little troubling.

You could have also been there in spirit...like your physical body stayed, but your soul/spirit/mind, went...

Yes, but now my question is, is there any way for me to find out for certain? Is there someone I could ask, or some way I could find to put this thing to bed for once and for all?

honestly..I really don't think so. I guess just whatever you feel in you heart, go ahead and believe it to be truth. Science has come a long way, but not that far. And I really don't know about metaphysically...

(by the way...I like your avie)

Thankies heart

And yes, I suppose science hasnt come that far yet so I'll have to go with what I believe once I've given it some serious thought. As for metaphysics, I'd ask a friend of mine, but dreams as far as they go, is not his strongsuit, besides Zeus and the demons might start bugging him again if I do that...that boy's got problems, I love him like a brother but yeah...

Yeah but we're also quite abit alike, so I can overlook his strangeness most of the time.
