Want to lead a charmed life? A bewitching Wiccan shows you how.
by Melissa Daly (Seventeen Magazine November 2002)
Give her a few candles and some kitchen spices, and Gwinevere Rain can work wonders. The 18-year-old has been practicing witchcraft with ordinary items like these for more than four years now, and her spells have resulted in quite a few success stories.
"Once I wanted to get to know a guy in one of my classes better, so I cast a sort of a love/friendship spell," recalls Gwinevere. "A week later, our teacher moved his seat right next to mine! I thought it must be a coincidence, but I checked the wording of the spell and it actually said, 'I want to be closer to him.'" Gwinevere is so into magick - spelled with a k to distinguish it from stage magic a la David Copperfield - she's even recently published a book on the topic called Spellcraft for Teens: A Magickal Guide to Writing and Casting Spells.
Gwinevere (that's here craft name; her real name is Katie) first got into Wicca while researching spells online for fun. "I didn't think magick was real, but when I read about people who actually believed in it, it began to intrigue me," she says. Her first spell was to heal her dog, who was suffering from a hurt leg. When the dog got better a few days later - without even seeing a vet - the power of spells started to seem very real to Gwinevere.
"Wicca is a religion that's closely tied to nature," explains Gwinevere. "Wiccans believe in both a goddess and a god. We celebrate eight holidays that coincide with the changing of the seasons - and of couse we believe in magick." For her, practicing magick is a way to communicate with the dieties. Gwinevere's mother, who's Catholic, is totally accepting of her daughter's divergent spiritual path. "She was a little hesitant at first," says Gwinevere, "but as soon as I explained that Wicca has nothing to do with hexes or curses, she was really supporive." Though her mom still credits the family dog's recovery to time, Gwinevere believes it was the combination of visualization and the powers of the god and goddess. "Magick is kind of like a prayer," she says, "I don't know exactly how it works, but sometimes it does." ((Lunaki says it always works.))

Gwinevere's Witchy Tips
The right atmosphere adds to the power of any spell. Try to cast at night, and make sure you have a private place to work, without interruptions.
Strongly Picture your goal. If you can visualize it, then it will have a better chance of comming true!
Have faith in yourself and in the spell. Negative thoughts and doubts will put barriers between you and your goal. If you believe, then your spell will work.
Give it time. You may see results in anywhere from three days to three months. Sparks won't fly from your fingertips while you're chanting, but if you win a contest or find out about a secret admirer in the near future, it just might be your magick kicking in..... (Of course, no guarantees!)
Red-lips Love Spell
About this spell: Use it to bring the perfect person for you at this time into your life. (The spell isn't for making a specific person fall in love with you - that would be manipulative.)
You will need: A small mirror; red lipstick; your favorite perfume; a piece of paper; a pen with red ink; an envelope; and red or pink flower petals.
What to do: Cast this spell on a Friday night, preferably during the waxing moon (when the crescent appears larger each night). Take the sheet of paper and pen, and write down qualities you'd like in a boyfriend, like blue eyes or a great smile. After you make your list, sign you name and spray the paper with perfume. Apply red lipstick and give the paper a big fat smooch to seal your wish with a kiss. Fold the paper and place it in the envelope. With the flower petals in your hand, picture yourself happy and in love. Drp the petals in the envelope and seal it. To set the spell in motion, place the envelope by your bed or hide it in a drawer.
Bully-freeze spell
About the spell: Moder witches use this type of spell to "freeze" the negative energies invading their lives. It won't hurt your enemies; it will just keep them at bay.
You will need: Access to a freezer; one clove of garlic; a small, empty jar with lid; a piece of paper; and a pen with black ink.
What to do: Write the bully's name on the paper. Open the clove of garlic and rub it over the name. Fold the paper into the size of a quarter and drop it in the empty jar. Next, fill the jar with cool water and say the following chant three times.
"Freezer churn, ice brew
lesson learn, cold stew
Bully nix your bad ways
Problem fix in a matter of days."
Seal up the jar and place it in the back of your freezer. Make sure you throw the garlic clove away (you don't want it to end up in tonight's dinner!). Over the next few days (while the spell is doing its thing), avoid the bully at every turn. And if the problem gets worse, tell your parents or a teacher.
Bewitch-me Prosperity Spell
About the spell: It is intended to pring money your way, and best used when there's an actual need.
You will need: A large seashell (or a small plate); a piece of lime peel; one teaspoon of cinnamon (or ground nutmeg); a shiny penny; a piece of paper' and either a pen with green ink or a green crayon or marker.
What to do: Turn the seashell so that the inside faces up. Take your paper and draw three dollar signs on it, write your name, then fold the paper so it fits in the seashell. Place the penny on the paper to prevent your wish from moving. Recite the following incantation (a fancy word for a spoken spell):
"Trickle smoke and lime green glance
Spickle stroke and fairy dance
Sea wave sunbeam ray of gold bewitch me silver
Green and raspit old send to me the power that be all that my pocket and purse can hold."
Next, add the lime pell to the shell and sprinkle cinnamon (or nutmeg) on top of it. Picture yourself obtaining all the money and objects you desire. On the following day, bury the seashell.
