Well, yeah. We have ONE REHEARSAL until our Winter concert, and I'm told, all of a sudden (two days ago, as we leave choir camp) that I'll be playing drums for two of our songs.

Now, don't get me wrong... I KNEW I was going to be playing drums for a while. In fact, I was excited and practicing.

But what the director so kindly told me very little time ago, is that I am throwing the sheet music out the window. He does NOT want me to follow it AT ALL. THAT means I have ONE REHERSAL to write TWO DRUM LINES and practice them with the choir, and perfect them! WTF WAS HE THINKING?!

I mena, I've played the lines with the choir ONCE before, but that WAS WITH THE SHEET MUSIC.

GONK!

I dunno what to do now! I have recordings of the songs, but I have to see how the CHOIR that I SING with, not the one that blares out of my computer, reacts with the drum line. Because the vast majority are not band students doubly, and some are only starting to read music this year, if I use complicated or swinging drum lines, they will get lost quicker than a toddler at Wal Mart >.O

So I have to find two bouncey, African drum lines for Djembes by TUESDAY and make sure that they sound and interract with the choir.

Basically, we're screwed.
rofl don't you just love how I have confidence in myself?
ANYWAYS!

HINTS! TIPS! ANY DRUMMERS HELLLLP MEE!

And if any of you want to know, we're singing Gabi Gabi by William Powel and Follow the Drinking Gourd by Dan Davison. IF YOU KNOW THESE SONGS IT WOULD HELP SO MUCH

Any advice would be LOVED!

Well, as a non-drummer, I can't help you with those rhythm lines (except to say KEEP IT SIMPLE, so that focus isn't on your drumming, but you already knew that I'll bet), but I can say that a good recorder will be your absolute best friend. You have only one rehearsal you say? First off, make sure you have the vocal sheet music, so if worst comes to worst, you still have the notes they'll be singing and you can work with that.

Second off, bring a recording device with you and record both songs. Quality doesn't have to be the best, just good enough that you can still hear the voices and their pitches. I promise you that will be the most useful thing you can do.

Oh! Thirdly, look for other music with African-style beats. Listen to it. If you hear those drums, I'm sure it'll help give you an idea of what to do.

I'm sorry I can't help more. ^^ Tell us how the concert goes!

I've got old sheets of african beats from band camp 4laugh I could probably scan those or something.. I've got a music program too, but that's only for certain instruments, and not drums.

When you first work through it (if you haven't already by the time you read this), play it softer, so that it's heard, but still quiet, so they don't get off track and follow your beats instead of what they're supposed to do.

Syncopation's cool, but if they can't stay on their part, then you won't be able to do so much of that.

I can't wait to hear what you do!

Well, here's your chance xd

Basically I took the first thing that came to mind that sounded African, perfected it, and put in random fills. It sounded alright, though my director told me it was PERFECT. The first time we sing through Gabi, Gabi in the recording, you can hear him shout "good job, Mel!" it made me feel special XDDD

And yeah, you hear us discussing what I do, and then I just wing it. Also, I threw in some other samples of the rehersal, because I know it's cool to hear other choirs ^^

We dont sound this young in real life... I used a CRAPPY MP3 player to record. So if you hear a bit of skipping around, and off-beat-ness, it's the recorder, not the choir.

Same for the flat-ish sound. Again, recorder's fault Dx

Here you go! =D
Enjoy X)

PS: I dont play drums in the last sample, that was a guy who's our director's best friend who randomly comes in and plays stuff while we reherse XDDD It's amusing and cool all at once.

EDIT: Enjoy our director's screw up on one of the times we're going through Follow the Drinking Gourd XDDD you hear the choir start off all confused, and then we break off laughing, and you hear me say "OH GAWD!" and then the director: "Sorry! My fault!"

Thanks, guys. It went well, to say the least. In fact, we sounded pretty good. I screwed up in band twice, and then when I was playing the drums I screwed up the odd time, but I just let it slide off and picked up the beat again, or improvised something. There is a recording, no word on when I can get my hands on it, though rolleyes
