so one of the key things that makes a riot grrrl band a riot grrrl band is the presence of feminist ideals in their music and lyrics. please discuss feminism in this topic and share your views on important issues on the "feminist agenda".
what are your views on the feminist movement(s)?
women in america have achieved so much in the past century. do you think that the younger feminists of today are fighting battles that have already been won?
what are some important feminist issues right now? why?
who is your favorite feminist role model? why?
(i'll post more questions and stuff as i think of them)

i have a lot of stuff to say right now but i'm having a hard time trying to organize all my thoughts about this.
i'm really angry right now about the way that i've been treated differently as a girl. for instance, if i'm talking with a group of guys about sex and stuff like that, at least one person in the group calls me a slut for sleeping with the same amount of people that they have. they themselves are viewed as being "so pimp" or totally cool for having sex with people. i am not a floosie! i am a lady with a sexual history. why do girls get called whores and sluts when they're doing basically the same thing that guys are doing?
i'm also angry because i'm the only girl trumpet player at my school and i get excluded sometimes because of it. there's a lot of male bonding that goes on within a trumpet section and i'm not a part of that. it's like because i'm just a little different from them i don't get the respect i deserve as a member of the section. and i'm not a bad trumpeter either, they say that girls have a smaller lung capacity but i can blow just as hard and long as any of the boys! (omg that sounded sooo dirty... ) there's a lot of this sort of sexism within the music industry. we wouldn't need riot grrrls if there wasn't.
and another thing, nationally, women are still recieving an average of 25% less wages than men. it's so obsurd! this is the year 2005!
then there's major issues like abortion. i think that it should be legal. here are my reasons: (1) abortion was originally made legal because women in desperate situations would choose to give themselves an abortion or go to some back alley-way where it would be done using unclean instruments or using an unsafe method. Women will have the choice to abort their child whether it's legal or not, the choice to do it in a safe environment where they lessen the risks of infection, sickness, and sterilization. (2) the laws that the government is proposing right now limit the right to have an abortion after the first trimester even if the baby poses as a threat to the mother's life. if someone's life is in danger it is a doctor's responsibility to help them, even if that means aborting a fetus. (3) taking care of a child is a big responsibility and if someone is not ready to be a parent but they find themselves pregnant they may find themselves in a financially bad situation. it costs money for abortion clinicians, but it costs a lot more for pediactric bills, food, housing, clothing, and other necessary things for raising a kid. you could say that you could put a child up for adoption but that child is still costing someone somewhere a lot of money. plus it's like, you spend these 9 months with a tiny human living inside you and then once it's born you're supposed to give it away to someone better. it seems really sad to me and i don't think i could go through it.
wow.. i didn't realize i had this much to say.

shizznazzled i'm also angry because i'm the only girl trumpet player at my school and i get excluded sometimes because of it. I played snare in high school. Definitely a male-dominated instrument. I play sax too, and Lisa Simpson's my role model there! I wish I had her lungs! Quote: (2) the laws that the government is proposing right now limit the right to have an abortion after the first trimester even if the baby poses as a threat to the mother's life. if someone's life is in danger it is a doctor's responsibility to help them, even if that means aborting a fetus. I can't ever see legislation passing that would prevent a doctor from saving a woman's life, especially at the expense of a fetus that will probably die too. I think a lot of people are misinformed about how often and why abortions are performed specifically to save the woman's life. It's usually an ectopic pregnancy that absolutely cannot be carried to term. This is usually discovered pretty early, before the fetus has developed to the point where it can feel pain. Yeah, it's tragic if the woman really wanted the child, but there's just no other real options. The problem I see with legislation concerning abortion is that little part that's always tossed into bills about preserving the woman's health. "Health" is such a broad definition that it really makes the restriction meaningless and now people are pissed off. I really don't see why there can't be a federal ban on abortions after the 2nd trimester except in order to save the woman's *life*. It would appease a lot of people who oppose abortion and it really wouldn't cause much of a problem. If getting pregnant is going to damage your health, you should be on birth control, and if you know carrying a pregnancy to term is going to damage your health, you should terminate it asap, not wait for months. Hrm...I seem to have ranted... sweatdrop So that's one of my views right there, heh...

I have only recently began my campaigns in the areas of Feminism, so my ideals might be unsophistacted. I know that as a male my fellow males see girls as a source of beauty and sex. At least I reconigize this in teenagers. I sympathisize with women on this issue. Also society pumps out an expectation that many women are pressured to feel the need to meet, This expectation that only reinstates the suspected image for woman and their purpose creates stress and self-confidence issues with females. It irritates me to hear my friends regard their previous girlfriends like yeah.. huh huh she had a nice a**, or she was tight. Actually it doesnt irritate me it pisses me off big time. I may be called a man bich but hopefully I can earn the respect of those women that I fight for.

ever since i was young i had a distinct drive to beat boys. what ever i did. i have my dad to thank for that. i was always taught to never give up. try harder. and dont let boys push you around. i wish that there were more girls raised like that. maybe there wouldnt be abuse issuses in relationships. girls would learn to fight for a stronger place in society. my biggest problem with the double standards is motocross, off roading, skating.... ect. i love to ride my dirt bike. and i was raised to ride with the big boys. therefore i will race with the big boys. whether race officials like it or not. my determination has broken a boundry in the local racing community of my home town. and made some what of a ripple for following women who want to steo up to the plate. all i want to see in society is equality, in things that we have passion for.... domokun xp

I basically grew up with my three guy cousins. I always wanted legos and hot wheel cars, and I even wantd to join the boy scouts. I remember always trying to impress my uncle because he thinks girls can't do the things guys do. For my whole life I have been trying to show that I am as smart and strong as a guy. Women need the feminist movement more than ever as we enter into the 21st century. There are going to be many changes and we have to be part of it.
I am a tenor in one of the choirs I join in and I can discuss nearly every political topic in a debate and win. My role model is Condoleez Rice and one day I will be the Secretry of State. Don't laugh at my dreams, we need more women in politics just like we do in music. Women see life in a different perspective from men and we need that kind of representation in the government.

I think we've made a big headway in terms of equality but I still think women need to step up to the plate and do something about it. There are always obvious issues like abortion, equal pay etc. However, I find it's the little things that are the ones that add up these days. As an example I went took a computer course at my highschool and i took web design because I like it. There was me and only one other girl. She felt very intimdated because she didn't know that much about computers and she was around by all the guys except for me. I tried to help her but she left even though she was no worse at the computer than some of the other guys in the back room. I know she felt intidmated by all the "guy" talk and that the idea that computers are primiarily for guys. This is the kind of thing that ticks me off a bit. It may be equal for women to do things that men can but women still don't generally do them. It's still a male dominated field. There has to be somone to stand up and say this is okay to do. I mean if you look at the riot Grrl movement that's just what they did there are a lot more girls today playing music and getting recognition than before. The best part of it all it's really just a lot fun to play regardless being male or female. Someday there won't be need to follow riot grrl movement because there will be plenty of bands both male and female. They will be more regonized by their ability to play than by their gender. Wishful thinking for now though. well i'm going to quietly step off my little soap box now. biggrin

I wish some of my friends would have that kind of support. I have a higher sense of my own worth then alot of my friends, I hope that I help some of them in some ways. I think some of them feel that they have to dress a certain way, act a certain way, to be respected. But just cause they get the boys attention doesn't mean they are respected by them. I think I made some of them realize that. But anyhow, my dad is really open to what I have to say about different things and i love him so much for that. I remember I was up in a huff about something having to do with abortion, I can't remeber what exactly.. But anyhow he asked me what was wrong and I told him only to find out he completely agreed with me and encouraged me voice my opinion. I'm really lucky to be raised by someone like that, it's really helped me.
