Just a thread to discuss B-movies. What you like, what you hate, yadda-yadda-yadda. smile Just remember to play nice, okay?

Review: The Undertaker and His Pals, starring Ray Dennis, 196?, available from Treasure Box Collection

Okay, this is, without a doubt, one of the strangest, cheesiest B-movies I've ever seen. And believe it or not, I mean that in a good way, although your personal opinion might vary. (The truly curious might want to check IMDB for more info.)

The basic plot -- Two restaraunteurs and an undertaker engage in a muderous plot to drum up business. Or, to quote the packaging:

"A cult black-comedy about an undertaker whom befriends a pair of motorcycle-riding, knife-weilding, psycho restaraunt owners who kill people for body parts to use in their (gulp!) blue-plate daily specials. Business for the undertaker and cheap meat for the restaraunt owners, sounds like a merger made in hell! Lunch anyone?"

Umm... yeah. sweatdrop Surprisingly gory in parts, particularly because it was made IN the 60's. Overall... ehh, I won't say it was truly bad, but I bet if MST3K were still on the air, they might have made an episode from this. And it was a cheap buy, to boot -- if there's a Dollar Tree store in your area, you might want to plunk down a buck for this baby, even though you might only watch it once, and it's an okay way to kill an hour if your're bored, eh? wink

(Note: This was originally posted in the "theblist" community on LJ, but I thought it would be appropriate here. Enjoy.)

Review: Santa Claus(1959) and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, both titles available at your local Dollar Tree store.

Okay, I meant to do this several days ago, but I haven't had the time. So I'll be doing it now. I think I mentioned before that Dollar Tree stores are a good place for cheap B-movies on DVD (I had purchased The Undertaker and His Pals a couple months ago). Well, with the holiday season in full swing, Dollar Tree stores are now carrying a stock of Christmas-related DVDs, including two movies that have been on MST3K -- Santa Claus and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

First, we have Santa Claus -- not the 80's film starring Dudley Moore, but the 1959 Mexican film. Instead of Santa living at the North Pole, he lives on cloud islands in the sky. Instead of elves making toys, children from many lands make them(check out the African contingent for a politically incorrect moment; only in the '50s could you get away with that in a film). Oh, and St. Nick hangs with Merlin, but he's a really goofy version; I kept hoping that Voldemort would show up and Crucio this twit. Oh, and Santa's going up against the Devil. Apparently, God's too much for Satan, so he's going after St. Nick. question

Oh, and Santa laughs just TOO DAMNED MUCH in this film; I wanted to reach into my computer monitor and b***h-slap him. stressed ANNOYING.

Overall, this was a cheesy, yet surprisingly heartwarming film. Pick it up, then wait and see if Rhino decides to releast the MST3K version.

Secondly, we have Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Every B-movie fan worth their salt knows about THIS movie.

Plus it has Pia Zadora in it. *shrug*

Anyway, I guess it's about as cheesy as Santa Claus -- cheesy, but in a good way. Not a bad movie, overall, but I really wanted to slap the taste out of Droppo's mouth. He was almost as annoying as Santa's laughing in the other movie. rolleyes

Again, this is another one to pick up, particularly if you can get the MST3K version(as part of Rhino's MST3K Essentials set). Plus the fact that they're $1 a pop can't be beat. biggrin

Now, if only Dollar Tree could carry Star Crash on DVD -- if they did, I could die happy. xd

Okay, that's all. Merry Christmas! smile

Man, I can't remember the name of this movie to save my life, but it has to be one of the worst B-movies I've ever seen...I was MSTing it the whole time...

The only thing I remember definitively was that it was set in "medieval" times, and there was a guy who's defining characteristic was that he had this huge sword that could (not joking) shoot laser beams. xd

If only I could remember the name...

I want to say The Sword and the Sorceror, but the sword in that didn't shoot laser beams, it shot parts of itself. sweatdrop

(that's another one I want on DVD, tho'.)

I love the movie, but I think Clash of the Titans should have been one of the movies MST3Ked. For a stop-motion film, it's great and it has more plot than most of the MST3K movies, but it's still a B movie. Predictable ending, stock characters and twists the true mythological stories into more knots than anyone knows how to untie.

Yeah, but it was a pretty good B-movie. ('tho it would have been better with the MST3K treatment. wink )

I actually got bored one night and played the movie over and over again, writing out various comments abour scenes and dialogue. Thenn, a few days later, some friend of mine came over and descided to watch "Clash" while I worked on the computer. Then it comes to the riddle scene, where Cassiopeia is presenting Andromeda to a crowd of men;

Cassiopeia: No man of bravery in my whole wide kingdom of Phoenicia? No man of courage in the whole world?!

Me: Shall we move on to the women, then?

My friends laughed for a good ten minutes.

I tend to buy a lot of those $1 DVDs you see at Wal-mart and Target just because some of the movies are so horrible it's hilarious.

Cosmos War of the Planets was one of the worst ones I've ever seen. It's hilarious at how bad it is. It's about astronauts who land on a planet controlled by a giant robot. It's just really bad. And it even has one of those endings where the bad guy is still around so you know everyone is doomed or something. Very cheesy dialogue. A great scene where a man walks up to another man and just punches him in the face out of nowhere. Forgettable characters and horrible acting. biggrin It's wonderful.

One of these days, I really need to hit a Wal-Mart to see if I can find any DVDs of really crappy Korean knockoff anime, like Space Gundam V. xd

The guys are at it again with "The Film Crew" and "RiffTrax". In the Film Crew, Mike, Bill and Kevin rift really old movies that they just never got around to rifting in MST3K. Their reason: Every movie, no matter how bad, should have a commentary track in the option menu.

Mike does RiffTrax alone, rifting modern "good" movies, but every now and then he has Bill or Mary Jo or Kevin join him in the rifting. Personally, I want the entire cast back to rift the good movies, not just one guy. Maybe one of these days Hollywood will take the stick out of its rear and let them do what needs to be done to films like "The Matrix", "Titanic" and "V for Vendetta".
