He is either afraid his friends will leave him, or pressure him to leave you.. or he truly is afraid they'll try to hurt you. Maybe he is afraid he won't be able to protect you.
You should sit down and tell him how much hiding your relationship is hurting you. tell him you shouldn't have to hide something so wonderful. Just talk it through see if there is really something to worry about or if there is just a fear there.

1) You are not ugly, never tell yourself that.
2) Don't let what they say get to you.
3) I agree with psycho. Tell him that you feel insulted he won't tell his friends, and talk it over with him. It's wrong for him to act like you're not important to him.
