World Type: A

Appearance:

Maggie is well into her forties, with dry red curls she wears pinned back in a messy bun. Crows feet crinkle the corners of her eyes, and one brow is almost permanently set higher than the other. Her eyes are sharp, muddy olive green, and usually lined in heavy makeup.

Upon Magdalene's right cheek is her namesake, a simple tattoo of a faded golden star. Though she says it is the source of her infamous luck, it's actually little more than a reminder of her show days in Vegas.

When she's not on duty, Maggie usually wears a house robe over a t-shirt and flannel pants. Her costume is a bit more ornate, with a rich bodice drawn tight around her thickening middle and layered skirts edging down around her calves, similar to the matron of an old west saloon. She usually wears the lacy garter from her first marriage as a card shark band around her left arm.

Even when she's working, Magdalene always has her trademark cigarette pressed between her painted lips. She's the same way about her smokes as men are about their guns...you can have it when you pry it from her cold dead fingers.

Personality:

Our Lucky Star is a fan of the finer things in life...those things being old whiskey, dark chocolate, and cheap cigarettes. When she has these things in abundance, all is well with the world. A shortage of any, however, leads to a short temper in turn.

Though a bit abrasive at first, Magdelene's crabby humor is rather transparent. It's simply a mark of her place and past, every dry remark covers genuine advice or care. She's rough around the edges in a way common folk can appreciate, which benefits her, since most of her audience is exactly that. Unfortunately, Maggie can't abide fussy men or prima donnas...which may no doubt lead to some interesting conflicts should she join the Cirque.

Talents:

Cards, shell games, and dice are Maggie's specialties. In truth, anything that involves betting really turns her crank. Her luck is only a minor part of her skill...time in Vegas taught her to count cards, some sleight of hand, and excellent misdirection. The cigarettes she constantly smokes are actually beneficial in her act, since most anyone turns their head or gives a few blinks when she aims a drawn out sigh of smoke in their direction. She is able to purchase her 'goodies', as she calls them, with her share of the profits from the game table...and if her cut is too low for her tastes, the Lucky Star isn't above a side bet or two.

Though her talents are only sideshow diversions, Magdalene knows she can make herself useful in the ring. Her luck is genuine, and always has been...in most areas at least. Unlucky in love, as the saying goes. Strapped to a spinning wheel, however, would suit her just fine. Many lovely assistants are unwilling to put themselves in the path of a knife, or under an apple, while some young buck takes careful aim. Maggie's luck gives her nerves of steel, and she's willing to lend a hand for performance or practice. If no one is in need of her talents, she's good with money, and happy to handle payroll or balancing the books. Despite her love of the game, Maggie knows better than to bite the hand that feeds her, and her till always comes out even.

It isn't all about money and luck, however. Over two decades of experience in Vegas favored her a with good eye for stage make up and costumes, and she's a fair hand with needle and thread. Magdalene's lust for the spotlight has faded, and she's sullenly grateful for whatever work she can find.

History:

Being a red head, to some degree, is a self fulfilling prophecy. After fifteen years of being teased for her inevitable 'fiery' nature, Maggie finally found her spark and packed her bags. Shapely legs and an easy smile earned her a place in the show lines in Vegas as one of the Starlight Seven, each one of them piling into the tattoo parlor after their first show to forever mark their bond with the matching little gold tattoos.

No bond lasts forever, though, and as her youth began to fade, she spent her mornings learning the tables. Morning was the best time, in truth...only the drunks and sharks were left once the sun began to rise. That meant easy money and good lessons, both of which she soaked up like a sponge.

The most valuable lesson she learned came from an older gentleman by the name of Richard Starling. The tattoo upon her cheek got them talking, at a table in the wee hours of the morning. That should have been her first clue, since he certainly seemed to hold his liquor. Within days, she was swept up by his smooth wit, subtle charm, and seemingly bottomless wallet. They were married in the Little White Wedding Chapel not a week later, and for the first time in years Maggie began to think of a life outside the city. She'd saved almost enough for a down payment on a house, but when she went to run the numbers by her husband, she learned he was more of a d**k than a Richard.

Her strong box, account, and jewelry box...empty but for a note. At least he'd been kind enough to warn her of his debts that had come due, and the fellows that would no doubt be seeking her out. She didn't waste any time packing what was left, and pawned her wedding ring the very next morning. It wasn't much, but she spent a whirwind of a week dancing from casino to casino, adding a few zeroes to her bills, before making a break for the edge of town.

It wasn't until she was trapped between trouble and a whole lot of desert that her luck started going her way again, and she found the flyer for Cirque. Costumes, exotic scenery, and a constant supply of new customers...already, it felt like home. Maggie snatched the yellowed paper, hefted her bags, and thanked her lucky star.

When I started reading, I had a few ideas of what her talent might have been from her name- but once I read it... I WAS NOT EVEN CLOSE. I like how you tied in and varified all the parts of her character. She feels well rounded and real. I like the starlight parts too, with her tattoo and the seven ladies. (lucky lucky lucky~)

I also think every good circus needs a con-woman with fast hands and a cigarette. heart

Some points to consider-

~ More info on her talents, things she'd be doing for the show
~ I like how she's got other side 'talents' like the costuming and makeup; not just a headliner or sideshow walker, she's a team player
~ Where do you see her in the circus? Beside the vendors, the game section, near the side show? Maybe she walks through the arena crowds doing mini-tricks between shows while the center stage is being changed/prepared
~ ......... I'm dying to know if the vegas mafia is after her. >_>.. *shot*

Thanks so much for the detailed comments!~ Where she got her mundane skills, make up and basic costuming, will be easy enough to flesh out in a paragraph or two, I'll put that on my list!

As far as fitted talents, that's a section I'm still working on. Working the audience before the show (and even placing bets without the audience knowing she works with Cirque) are both good options! I'd love more input from anyone about creative ways to fit her talents to the show. <3

And who is after her will make an interesting side plot, should she join and ever return to earth. ><
