ok, well we all know that there are different versions of the story to Phantom and I thought it would be interesting to see who thought which one is the best Phantom interpretation. I have a list of most of the Phantom of the Opera shows, books, and soundstracks that have been made. If you have something to add to the list or if I have missed something please correct me.

Movies:

~1925 silent version, Starring Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin
~1929 Improved silent version with Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin (yes there is a difference)
~1943 version, Starring Claude Rains and Susanna Foster
~1962 version, Starring Herbert Lom and and Heather Sears
~1974 version, Starring Paul Williams and William Finley
~1983 version, Starring Maximillian Schell and Jane Seymour
~1986 ALW version, Starring Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman
~1988 animated version
~1989 version, Starring Robert Englund
~1990 TV version, Starring Charles Dance
~1991 musical version, Starring David Staller and Elizabeth Walsh
~1998 version, Starring Julian Sands
~2002 animated version
~2004 ALW's Musical is on film, Starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum(very different from the stage version)

Soundtracks:
~Original London Cast Starring Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman
~Original Canadian Cast Starring Colm Wilkinson and Rebecca Caine
~Movie Cast Starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum

Novels:
~1910 Gaston Leroux
~1990 Susan Kay

Firstly I would say that the stage version is the best out of all of the version made just because it follows the idea of a man being horribly disfigured and he falls in love with an opera singer, but she loves another man, and you all know the rest. My favourite soundtrack is the Canadian version because Colm Wilkinson is perfect for the Phantom's voice. My favourite novel would have to be Gaston Leroux's book because I have not been able to locate susan kay's book.

Experience points

Movies:
~1925 silent version, Starring Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin
~1929 Improved silent version with Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin
~1943 version, Starring Claude Rains and Susanna Foster
~1986 ALW version (Meaning the PLAY.)
~1988 animated version (I think...)
~2004 ALW's Musical is on film, Starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum

Soundtracks:
~Original London Cast Starring Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman

Novels:
~1910 Gaston Leroux
~1990 Susan Kay

I think that I like the stage version best, because unlike movies and books, you can actually see it happening before you, and not on a TV screen or anything, and this makes it much more exciting.

He burns and kills the Fop and used most of the characters of the book!)

My small Phantom experience:

Movies:
-1925 silent version, Starring Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin
(Great movie, even at the very end where it's totally out of the ball park from the book's ending.)
-1989 version, Starring Robert Englund
(Horrible depiction of POTO, in my opinion, but it sure as heck was hilarious to see Raoul Richard get stabbed and lit on fire xd Fop a la flambe, anyone?)
-2004 ALW's musical on film, Starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum
(Being the visual treat that broke my Phantom virginity whee I'll always be quite fond of it even though so many phans seem to dispize it.)

Soundtracks:
-2004 movie version (own it, love it)
-Original London Cast (heard it, love it)
-Nightwish's version (own it, love it)
-DDR/Techno version (downloaded own it, love it)

Novels: (forgive me for not putting the years)
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux
(I've read it twice and I heart L-O-V-E heart it)
Phantom by Susan Kay
(You can borrow my copy if you don't mind the phangirl drool all over it. Honestly, even in his most deformed versions Erik could not be unsexy if he tried)
The Phantom of Manhattan by Frederick Forsyth
(I give you fair warning now: avoid this book at all costs)
Angel of the Opera: Sherlock Holmes Meets the Phantom of the Opera by Sam Siciliano
(I definately recommend reading this one. Spoiler: It's one of the few stories that actually has a happy ending for everyone, including Erik)
Angel of Music by D.M Bernadette
(This book has three stories to it, the first two of which are quite boring but the third one is fairly interesting)

Live Performance:
January 19, 2006 in Pittsburgh, PA with Gary Mauer
