Welcome to the Get a Beta, Be a Beta guild.
Below is what particular subforums and threads are for. If you have any troubles, please PM a mod.

Resources and Help
The resources and help subforum is here to help you. Make use of it. You can check out the links available in the stickies or ask questions. Now how do you ask questions? Good question.

1. Check the first three pages at least to make sure your question hasn't already been asked and checked the FAQ. Chances are someone has asked it and it has been answered.

2. If it's not there or requires specific information, go ahead and create a thread. Since this guild is new, bumping isn't necessary and frowned upon when done excessively. If it falls onto the third page, then it's acceptable.

3. Wait for an answer. We, mods, aren't the only ones who can answer questions. You guys can too.

Fan Fiction
The fan fiction subforum is for you to post your fan fiction and get it critiqued by not only your beta but the entire guild. However, don't expect all praises, and if you can't handle harsh criticism, please state it. Many beta readers are blunt but not harsh.

1. Copy your story from a word program. It's easier to type it out in a word program (especially with spell check) and paste it into the box.

2. Create a new thread.

3. When posting additional chapters, use the same thread. We don't want chapters to be floating around.

Original Fiction
The original fiction subforum operates in the same fashion as the fan fiction subforum except the stories aren't based off of existing works. It takes time and energy to creating new worlds and characters. The processes is the same for posting.

Please refer to the previous section in relation to the posting process.

Beta/Gamma
These threads have been organised into master lists and application threads. Please post in the application thread using the provided form and a mod will list you into the according master list.
You can then follow the below steps to find a beta or gamma.

1. Search through the appropriate thread. If you can't find it... I don't know what to say. They're both stickies.

2. Contact that person.

3. If you decide on partnering, one of you PM a mod or Pride Edward Elric (Chibi's mule) to have your names placed on the partners in crime thread.

Rules
These are important and may change.

  • Remember to follow Gaia's ToS!

  • Keep chatspeak to an absolute minimum. This is a guild of writers, we all find it annoying.

  • Respect authority figures! Well, really respect everyone, but mostly authority figures!

  • No whining! Be mature in how you give, and recieve concrit. We do not flame in any way shape or form.

  • Please refrain from spamming! Eventually there may be a subforum for it, but for now it's just a no!

  • Everyone is entitled to his/her own beliefs/opinions/thoughts. If you disagree with someone, fine, but don't force that person to change.

  • We also have certain ways we want to write our stories. If you are a beta/reviewer, don't expect the writer to change to your preferences. The writer is entitled to his/her fave pairings and what happens during the story. You, however, make suggestions.

  • Posting a link, a summary, or anything without the actual story in the fan fiction or original subforum is considered spam and a no no in the guild. If you want to advertise your story or profile, post it in the OOC forum. There will be threads to the major sites so we don't have so many threads cluttering the forum.

FAQ

Beta/Gamma related FAQ
Other terms can be found over at the glossary

Q : What is a Beta?
A : The job of a Beta is to proof read a story for any spelling/grammatical errors. They're the second person to read what you've written and they're basically an editor.
They will go over your work(s) and tell you how you can improve. They will also help to keep your story focused, keep the characters in character, help you with character development, plot development, and help smooth out ideas.. Betas are supposed to give you an honest critic, and point out any major flaws.
Many have strengths in certain areas. It's helpful to find someone who has a strength in your weak area.

Q : What is a Gamma?
A : Gammas are people who would like to have their written works read over by another in order to check for spelling/grammar mistakes
They are the original author who is seeking someone to help them edit.

Q : Why do you highly recommend getting a beta reader? Can't I edit my own work?
A : It's better if a second pair of eyes look at it. Since it's your work, you tend to miss the details and, with original stories, know stuff that a reader doesn't. A beta reader will help point out small mistakes you skip over, or point out larger ones you don't notice simply because you're the author.

Q : How do I apply to be a Beta?
A : You don't "apply." You post the form (shown in that thread) on the "Beta Applications" thread. A potential gamma may PM you after looking at that and then *wham* love at first site. However, if you're serious about being a Beta, be proactive! Take a look at the 'Complete Gamma Reference' sticky, find a Gamma who sounds like a good match, and PM them with an offer to Beta their work.

Q : How do I become a Gamma?
A : Post the form (shown in that thread) on the "Gamma Applications" thread. A potential Beta may PM you after looking at that and *wham* love at first sight. However, if you're serious about wanting to find a Beta, be proactive! Take a look at the 'Complete Beta Reference' sticky, find a Beta who sounds like a good match, and PM them with a request to become your Beta.

Q : How will I know when I receive a beta/gamma?
A : He/she will PM you, either offering to be a beta/gamma, or accepting your PM'd request to be their beta/gamma.

Q : What should I do after I receive a beta/gamma?
A : Let a mod know so that your names can be added to the 'Partners in Crime' sticky. Then, start writing!

Guild related FAQ

Q : I'm having a problem with another member! What should I do?
A : PM one of the mods with your version of what happened, and a link to the conversation. We will decide who is in the wrong from there. We won't ban anyone without information or evidence. However, if it violates Gaia's ToS and our own Rules, we will consider this course of action

Q : What should I do if someone's flaming my work?
A : Report it to us. We will try take care of the situation as soon as possible. Please see the question above for further information if this gets out of hand.

Q : A mod is abusing his/her powers. What should I do?
A : In the extremely unlikely even this happens, please report it to another mod, Vice-Captain or Captain.

Q : Why are there two threads for betas and gammas?
A : We're going back to the old way of doing things. Why? It's easier to find a beta/gamma and know who is paired with who. Plus, it makes us mods become more involved. Now who doesn't want active mods?

Q : I have a question regarding writing/fandom/characters/etc, where do I post the question?
A : Post it in the Resources and Assitance subforum. If you see a similar thread, please refer to that. Otherwise, we'll end up with a lot of repleats. I suggest you look on at least the first few pages. The subforum moves very slowly.

Q : Why is it so slow?
A : Well, we all have lives, and I'm not sure where the guild is going.

Q : When are you going to get the monthly contest up and running?
A : That depends on how fast we can organize it.

Contest related FAQ

Q : How can I apply for a judge position?
A : Simply PM Chibi Envy Chan with a sample of no less than 1k. It can be from an existing work or part of one so long as it meets the requirement.

Edit: There is now a thread for application. Please use that. My inbox does not need more PMs.

Q : Why are you asking for a sample?
A : Because I want to see how your abilities are as a writer.
