The grey and black female was sunning herself on a rock. A few last days of unseasonal warmth were hitting the forests before the return of the cold, wet winter. Idly, she watched as her daughter trained in some scrub below her. Maia had grown and filled out a little since she had arrived and had gained a sleek look as her first winter coat grew in. Born early in the season the orange female had been able to bulk up in time for the hardships of the winter aftr the pair's rescue by this packs rust-coloured, female alpha.
Maia, it appeared, was trying to catch a squirrel. The small animal was digging a winter cache unaware of the danger behind him. As Maia moved, though, her brilliant orange coat caught in the sunlight and the squirrel, easily catching sight of her in the mostly monochrome landscape, fled.
Autumn had been good for Maia, she had been camouflaged with all of the orange and yellow tones but now she sod out like a sore thumb and was having trouble improving her hunting skills. 'Neira sighed, wondering yet again why she pinned her hopes so much on this one daughter, hopeless as she was. "Stupid girl..." she muttered, grimacing. "Maia! I told you, you need to stay in it's blind spot where it can't SEE you!" she alled down to her daughter. Maia, looking somewhat dejected, put her nose to the ground to see if she could scent out any more prey to practice on.

It had been hot these last few days, but the young blue female didn't expect it to last much longer. Already all the leaves had fallen, littering the ground and making it harder to sneak up on anything. Tss. It could be really annoying... especially when she was as hungry as she was now. And her ribs still ached...
A chill breeze whipped past, a reminder that winter was still coming. It would only get harder. How irritating.
Jori sighed and padded forwards, attempting to make no sound as she searched for suitable prey. She'd even eat a chipmunk, should one be so kind as to appear. She sniffed the air, searching for something to give her a clue. The scent of strange wolves reached her instead.
The blue paused, ears flicking nervously. She wasn't exactly afraid, but after her last few incounters with others, caution wasn't something to be thrown aside lightly.
But these were Kara's packlands, so the wolves probably wouldn't be hostile... right? Sure. Jori crept forwards, eyes searching.
There!
A flash of orange through the trees, followed by an irritated reprimand.
After a moment of hesitation the small blue female stalked into the open, ears pricked and body held in a manner that she hoped was friendly. She wagged her tail slowly, head cocked in a slightly puppyish gesture that belied her youth.

As the blue female came into view 'Neira's ears pricked up and she raised her body so she could easier see this newcomer. She had not yet come across any other wolves in this territory - though she had been told there were some. Was this another member of the pack perhaps? The female was blue, patterned with silver and a soft pale green and looked young compared to 'Neira although the grey wolf herself had only seen a few seasons.
When the blue female postured in a friendly manner 'Neira became hopeful. It had been a long time since she had seen another who was even willing to consider being anything other than rough, mean or indifferent to her. Even the pack's alpha was gruff; though to 'Neira, whom she had saved, she was like a shining stone, hidden in a rough coat.
Looking around for her daughter she saw that the pup had moved off further into the wooded brush and would, hopefully, stay there. There would be less pressure on her if she could feel out this new wolf before Maia appeared back...
Used to the submissive role in her old pack, 'Neira walked towards the female, tail wagging softly, head lowered a little. She didn't know the structure of this pack yet and didn't want to chance upsetting a more established female - she wanted to stay here after all.
"Hello..." she said, her body posture a little wary, eyes flicking up to fix on Jori, and her tone very different from her barking commands to her daughter moments ago. She didn't trust males but she knew other females could be just as vicious if you did the wrong thing.

Following the other wof's gaze, Jori watched the orange youth dissapear into a forest of dry, bare branches. It was better this way; meeting too many wolves at once could be intimidating...
The blue's attention shifted at once back to the grey female, eyes wary despite her friendly approach. The only wolf she'd meet here who was interested in possible friendship was Kara, and even that wasn't certain. She wasn't around that much anymore, anyways. And Kiros...
Ha.
She didn't even know what to make of that one. But... it would be nice to have a female to stay with, to be friends with. It had been too lonely these last few days, and her sore ribs and rumbling stomach hadn't helped matters any.
"Hey... are you part of Kara's pack?" You never knew. She could be a tresspasser... but Jori didn't want another fight, and she hoped desperatly that she had finally found the other pack members.

The reply was slightly unexpected to 'Neira. "Yes, I am.." she answered, still keeping her posture friendly. The grey female breathed an internal sigh of relief. This other female, was likely of Kara's pack too, if she knew of it. In fact her being here was a good clue to that - Kara had said it was hard to find this place and certainly 'Neira would not have been able to had she not been given directions.
Her head cocked to one side slightly as she returned the question. "You are too?"
The blue female seemed a little odd - friendly yet also reserved in her movements. Her tone was was relatively neutral but that first question gave 'Neira an insight into this other's distrustfulness. All the same, if she was another pack member 'Neira wanted to make sure they were on good terms if she could.

Relief flooded the small blue's body, and her posture immediatly changed. Gone was any trace of hostility, although the wariness was still there in the back of her eyes. She relaxed her ears and her tail; obviously this female wasn't going to challenge her.
"Yeah, I am." And if Kara trusts you, that's enough for me. Her mouth split in what might have been a smile, tail wagging more than it had in a long time.
"I'm Jori." She tilted her head slightly, tongue lolling. "Who are you?"
Man, it had been a while since her spirits had been this high! Even her sore ribs didn't seem as bad, and her hunger was almost ignorable. The blue hadn't realized how much she missed packlife until now.
I'm certainly not a good loner. But that didn't matter now.

All at once the blue seemed to change, her look becoming more friendly, less pensive towards the grey. 'Neira watched, smiling as the others tail began to wag like her own. Perhaps she'd have a new friend afterall? It certainly would be nice to be in a pack where you weren't the butt of jokes or derogatory remarks most of the time. She had never really quite fit in with her old pack.
"I'm Antianeira." she answered Jori. It was a nice name, short and pretty unlike her own mouthful. "'Neira for short" she added, knowing it was a pain to call out her whole name, especially when urgency was required and you never knew when that'd happen.
"I'v never run across another of our pack yet" she smiled, letting the other know she thought this was a good thing. "Myself and my pup arrived here a while ago" she looked over her shoulder to see if she could still see the bright orange 'pup' but no sight could be seen of her. Turning back to Jori she wondered aloud "Have you been here long?"

Antianeira...
Jori was glad there was a shortened form; she wasn't even sure if she could say this female's name correct in her head, much less out loud. But Neira was nice, short and concise.
"Neira is a pretty name!" All of her siblings (at least those who were deemed important) were named after the forest; stone, leaf, bird... it got kind of annoying after a while. Why Leu had seen fit to do that, she didn't know. Certainly if she chose to have puppies, they would have fine, strong names.
"Kara is the only wolf here I knew, till now." The small blue's ears drooped slightly. "But I haven't seen her much recently..." Not since the confrontation with that strange male.
"But I know you now, and you know me!" She announced happily. "And I'll know that little orange kid too, right?"

'Neira was somewhat taken aback by the enthusiasm of this wolf all of a sudden but it made her feel a warmth she'd bever really felt before. She was no longer the outsider, this wolf hadn't grown up with her, made judgements based on her parents.
Neira grinned. "Thank you, Jori" she said, somewhat formally, not all that used to talking to wolves she didn't know so well. "I'd only know Kara up until now, too and I've seen little of her too..." she wondered where the russet female had gone to.
She greeted Jori's enthusiasm with some of her own "It's good to know were not alone here any more... and yes I'm sure Maia will be glad to meet you!" she didn't know yet that the pup wasn't coming back - that realisation would come later.
"Do you have any pups of your own?" she wasked, wanting to find out more about this other female. She might have left them hidden when she seen Neira, not knowing wether the grey she-wolf was friendly or not.

Jori shook her head. "No, no pups." There was a hint of sadness in her voice as she spoke though. It might be nice to have puppies someday. Especially if they were all as cute as Wyatt had been...
"Is Maia your daughter, then?" Neira didn't look anything like the bright orange and black asolescent she'd seen through the scant cover of the trees. But Jori supposed that it could be the father who lent those bright colors to her.
The small blue stretched out and yawned, wincing only a little from the pain in her side. She glanced apologetically at the grey female. "I haven't had much rest recently, I'm a little worn out." It has been a long few days since she'd last seen Kara and that lone male.
With a soft, almost inaudible sigh she settled down on a patch of drying grass. It was nice to be with another friendly wolf again; she could relax a bit. Her nerves were stretched to the breaking point from the stress of looking out for herself.

Neira sympathised with the female a little. Until she'd had her pups she'd dreamed of settling down with little ones running around her. It had been unrealistic at the time and had probably led to the trouble which caused her to be pregnant with Maia and her siblings at the time. Reality, of course, was a lot less pretty.
"Yes, she's my daughter." Neira said, seeing the same look in Jori's eyes that she'd become used to. Maia didn't look much like Neira at all. "She takes after her father.. though the black is from me." All of that litter had some of their father in them. Some little piece of orange which reminded Neira of the loathing she had for him and the predicament she'd been left in.
Neira wondered a little why the blue was so worn out but, then, winter was coming, prey was getting harder to catch and lonliness took a toll... Neira had escaped that thus far due to having Maia with her.
"It's allright" Neira smiled, shifting to lay down herself. The ground was cool but her thick winter coat protected her from the worst of it. "It might be a hard winter for us with so few in our pack." she said, musing. "I'd be happy to hunt with you any time you'd like... Groups make it easier" she added. She didn't want to come right out and say it but she wanted the other to know that, as another member of the pack, she'd happily help Jori out.
