Ok, as a Canadian, I actually have to try to catch myself when I write "eh?" into my American character's dialogue. razz

Do Americans use that a bit too, or is it really just us Canadians? XD Do Americans say something like "Huh?" instead, typically?

(It may be worth noting that my characters are currently kind of south-ish, in or not far from Texas, although they are not really from that area and don't speak with any noticeable accent.)

Well, I use "Neh?" and "Huh?" and probably an assortment of stupider sounding things when confused like "Buwha?" and "Deh... umm...."

I'm from sunny California... I've been to Texas once... for a wedding @_@ thank the gods I didn't have any hicky people married in... though they're all devout Catholic and I'm... on the dangling edge of Satanic *off-topic*

I only say "eh" when I'm pretending to be Canadian! XD

But yeah, I usually say "Huh?" or something along those lines.

Ok, I'll try to remember to stick to "huh" then. :3

And sorry if my signature is appearing hideously whacko, been trying to fix it... it appears fine in my preview... sweatdrop

Yeah, I'm from the South, and we rarely use "eh" unless imitating Canadieans. redface Sorry! I love my neighbors to the north, I plan on moving up there one day, but yeah, "eh" isn't exactly common for us, although it's common in let's say, a Wisconsin/Michigan/Minnesota accent, because they're closer to the Northern border, and some British accents use "eh" a lot.

My grandparents are from Wisconsin and they sound a lot like Canadians, but the rest of my family is Southern as heck, although individual accents vary from region to region. A Texas accent has more of a drawl, while in Virginia (where I live) it's more twangy, and in North Carolina it's a bit throatier, and in South Carolina they leave off all their consonants and it becomes one long vowel movement. In Georgia, it's a bit of refined Southern accent, like the kind you would hear from debutantes. Louisiana's accents have been influenced by their Cajun population, so they have a slower type of speech.

. . .

Oh, gosh, I'm carrying on, sorry. Things like accents and the etymology of words have just always interested me, so I tend to babble once I get started.

. . . .

Yeah.

I'm a military brat, so my lingo is all screwed up. I use "eh", "ne", "ne ne", "uh-huh", "huh", "hmmm...", "hn", "nya", and "meow" at the end of my sentences. I'm american though. razz

I say 'eh' all the time. It irks one of my canadian friends cause I'm not canadian. XD But yes, 'huh,' 'um,' 'er,' 'uh,' and other sounds of empty stupidity are commonly used by americans.

I've lived in Texas my whole life and I don't think I have any kind of drawl or accent. But that's just me. I use 'huh' 'eh' 'meh' 'wha' and lots of other things like that, but not really the Canadian 'eh?'. Does that help any?

And I do tend to meow in sentences, too. You're not alone, GhostlyMaiden.

My boyfriend is actually Canadian and he never says 'eh' or talks with an accent. His mother may sometimes but I guess the farther East you go, the more you hear it, because none of his friends in BC say it. I don't either.

Well, the words you would use as a space filler generally vary, depending on the placement in the sentence, as well as what region your characters are in.

These are just the rules I write by when using general spacefillers:

If a character is considering something. "Hmm..."
If a character is confused. "Huh?"
If a character does a double take and is suprised b. "Wha-? AH!"
If a character is nervous or does not know what to say. "Uhm..."

If you're writing regional dialects, the best thing to do would be to talk to someone from that area so you don't get your regions mixed up. You wouldn't want a native Texan saying 'Youse guys' any more than you'd want a native New Yorker saying 'Ya'll', unless there is a legitimate character reason. ("Both of my parents were from New York, so even though I grew up in Texas, I still say youse guys instead of ya'll." Etc.)

You know what's funny? I live in Newfoundland, Canada and I don't say "eh". I always thought that no one ever said "eh" until I actually heard someone from the mainland say it.
I do however say "Yes by". Usually to replace something like "Wow!" or "Really?". Once my mother said it to a woman who had never heard it before and got all offended, thinking that she had just been called a boy. Which isn't quite what it's supposed to mean. sweatdrop

I use it, but I also use a lot of Brittish sounds and words in my normal speech. It comes from reading too much Harry Potter I guess.
