I've read the Hitchhikers Guide and my husband has the other books in the series. I'll get around to reading them eventually! I checked out a whole bunch of books from the library to read and I have hardly touched them. I did start reading some of Jingo though. I don't think I'll finish the others before they're due back on Monday. I need to remember to only get one at a time. That's the only way I finish them.

Belease Yeah, I agree. The first book was great, the other books still had a great sense of humour but really bad structure and plots. stare Yeah I have to agree with you on that one. I just finished Mostly Harmless, and the ending was a real let down, especially after "So Long, and thanks for all the fish." But I don't think I read them for the plots or lack thereof. I am enchanted with his asides which sing so true with the social commentary of the modern era. For example, the talking cows in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, and their sentience just to tell their patrons to eat them.

Yeah... I read the first one and liked it, but from then on they got kind of tedious to read. There were some hilarious/really clever parts, but a lot of it was confusing and didn't make any sense and wasn't funny at all. I'm reading Mostly Harmless when I get bored in class... it's quite boring as well, but I think that 'the restaurant' and 'life, the universe' were the worst.

Actually, the one I read was all the books in the series put into one big book. I like the whole thing, too. The credits for the movie their making based on it looked awful. That movie is going to completely slaughter the book. sad

That movie is going to completely slaughter the book. sad Note: Before going off on your little "the movie ruins the book" tangent, do a tiny bit of research. The book isn't even the original version of HHG. It was actually a radio show first. Maybe the book ruined the radio series, hm? Not to mention the other five mediums it has already been released in. Seriously. I wish people would get over their "oh noes the movie will shred the books into tiny bite-size pieces!" thing. If you think the movie is gonna suck, don't go see it. Just read the book again while I go to the cinema and enjoy my film, aiight? I apologize if I sound like a total jerk, but that kinda attitude just bugs me.

I highly enjoyed the original Guide, despite reading it for a school project; anything you can actually like after putting it through the I'm-gonna-be-tested-on-this meat grinder is a rare treasure, indeed. I love dry humor and got a kick out of Adams's style. I also agree with those who felt the plots started dropping off the further the series went, however.
Now, here's a question: does anyone remember the old Infocom text game based on this book? Clever folks can probably find an online Flash version of said game if they want to give it a try (they added pictures in for reference, even).

I didn't know about the radio show. I don't see how it's exactly relevant to what I'm saying, though. I loved the book. I saw the trailer for the movie and it looked horrible. In fact, that's the very reason I'm going to go see the movie. Just so I can talk about how horrible it was compared to the book. It creates a nice little medium for me. It's kind of like how you said if I didn't think I was going to like the movie I shouldn't go see it, but you didn't like my additude about it and still commented.

Alright, I'm just going to try and be as concise as possible: If you want to compare the movie to the book, fine, great. But the book's words and plot and such are not suddenly going to fall apart because of the movie. The movie is just meant to be an -interpretation- of HHG, not a transliteration. Just like the book was an interpretation of the radio show. Now, if the movie if just a bad movie by movie standards, that's a whole nother story, but don't go telling me it sucked because it didn't follow the exact storyline and whatnot.

Elitist Pretzel Eater Why not, if that's my opinion? Well, obviously I can't stop you, but why not just judge it as a separate piece instead of damning it from the get-go? Unless you just enjoy making fun of the movie, which is perfectly legitimate ^_^ My grievance with your original post was just the "movie ruins the book" deal, is all. I just find it to be simply untrue that the movie is going to radically change anyone's perception of the book.

Mehe Lovecraft-West Down the street from my house is a eatery called the resturaunt at the end of the universe. I nearly drove off the read when I saw it and my brain made the connection. That rocks! I'm reading hitchhikers guide, and I luff it! I heart your siggie, by the way.

I loved the first one, the second one was good, but then the rest weren't as good.
I love Zaphod when he says "I'm up to here with cool... you could keep a side of meat in me for a month, I'm so hip I have trouble seeing past my pelvis."
I guess I didn't like the others that much because everyone got separated, they were good togther, and I love Marvin.
Yay, pink worlds for electric monks!
