in the mean time, i will post a response...
I can proudly say that I was arround when leet first started...though i didn't start participating in the usage untill much later. I'm not sure if the original creation was for the same reason, but my friends and I used l33t as a way to talk about personal (and other such) things while our parents were over our shoulders. Parents couldn't read it.

It also worked with online games, such as Runescape (god I haven't been there in ages...)
If you knew where something really rare and valuable was, you could speak in L337 and leave all the other players confused

I actually DO know the story of the origins of 1337 believe it or not. whee I've told it several times before, not sure if I did here though and it was a while ago, so here's the gist of it: It started out with hackers as a way to share information online without being picked up by search engines (which I think 1337 google may have killed now xd ). This way they could secretly network among themselves without just any old idiot with access to search engines typing in something like "how to hack" and finding and busting them. This language then spilled over into the gaming community (typical common interest of a person who likes computers is gaming of course, we all know that) and people would say things like "j00 d34d f00!" to people after killing them in games where you could speak in text to opponents. From there it became more well known from what people knew of and associated with it from gamers. 3nodding I had a website I read this on way back...I think there's a link to the page in one of emo 's many writings under the comics. It's somewhere in there if you can find it. xd
