Something suddenly appeared in front of Shambala as she snuck into the cave. A large fuzzy shape was curled up not far from the entrance - just enough to be out of the wind. The she-bear had made her den here intending to over-winter in the protected valley. She was just now resting off her last large meal - putting on the pounds for winter.
The last thing she expected was to wake up to the smell of wolf! Those creatures generally did not tangle with her kin but beither were they particularly friendly. The unhappy bruin grumbled into wakefulness, her maw opening wide in a defensive, ear-shattering roar as, with her tiny eyes, she sought out the wolves which she could smell around her.
The image of a deer without fur made Aoede almost yip out loud with amusement. She stifled it, though. Serious business, hunting, no time for laughing... She nodded her head decicively at this internal thought. Still, it was fun and they had their prey right where they wanted it. Aoede followed the dark pup into the cave, looking around herself with great interest. So this is what a deer hole looked like?
Turning back to look in front of her Aoede saw teeth. Big teeth. Plenty of them. The little wolf stopped in her tracks, golden eyes growing wide, ears laid back, small tail instantly tucked beneath her in fear. She was petrified and rooted to the spot. Unable to move, talk, breath. Her tiny heart pounded in her chest as the loud roar echoed off the cave walls. Since when did deer have teeth like these!?

Darting after the other two, Melete was standing in the mouth of the cave when the bear roared from within. The noise was the loudest, most earth-shattering noise she had ever heard, and it scared her senseless. She froze like a deer caught in headlights, unsure of what to do and where to go. Panic rose in her throat and she let it loose in an involuntary yelp.
Deer were much, much bigger and scarier that she had ever thought. How did mum and dad and Ouranos hunt these things?? They were huge!
Giving in to her instincts, the little dark pup managed to find how her legs and voice worked again. Turning, she fled for the bushes, desperate to get away.
"RUN!!!"

Teeth. Lots of teeth. And a roar Bala almost didn't hear in her shock and surprise. But she didn't need telling to run twice, scrambling a little as the turned to bolt out of the "deer hole". That wasn't no deer. That was something even Daddy had been scared of. But, in her defense, she hadn't been near a bear in a loooong time. And they were kind of the same colour as she imagined a deer to be.
Oh boy, did she feel silly... and scared. Mostly scared.
But she still stood by the fact that deer lived in holes.

Despite her sisters' call Aoede stood rooted to the spot. It was as if her legs wouldn't listen to her at all. Her small frame shuddered and a strangled whimper managed it's way past her lips. The bear's eyes had narrowed on the small pup now and she ambled forward, growling grumpily.
Suddenly Aoede felt a shadow fall over her, a grip on the back of her neck and found herself moving quickly, her eyes unable to focus as the world whirled around her. Outside the cave, on the tail of her sister and friend, she found herself dumped on the ground and nudged forward. It was all she needed and she scooted forward, panic still in her mind, coming to a stop only once she'd run out of breath.
Staggering, looking around her, she found herself facing a pair of pale fawny legs. Her eyes travelled up guiltily and found Ouranos' face. He didn't look angry. It was worse... he looked dissapointed. The fawn male had never said a harsh word to the pups, had always looked after them and played with them when her parents were tired. She looked away from him, at the other two pups, her small eyes downcast.

Once she felt she'd reached a safe distance from the big brown thing with teeth, Melete spun around to make sure her companions had kept up. Shambala was near, but she couldn't see her sister anywhere. She stared for a moment, panic beginning to grip her again as the small thought that the bear might actually have got her occurred. No, it couldn't have. Aoede was ok. She had to be.
"...A...Aoede?" she called out hesitantly, her voice small. "..Please...please come out.." A nearby rustling caused her to jump and spin around. Surely it was her sister - it had to be. But... Aoede wasn't that big.. The dark pup backed off a little as Ouranos appeared in front of her. Her heart leapt as she realised that he had Aoede safe and sound. It quickly sank again as she saw his face.
...Boy, were they in trouble now..

For a second, Shambala was convinced that Ouranos was in fact the bear come after them to have her chunk of wolf meat. However, when she saw it was their babysitter, she felt her tail tuck down between her legs and she let out a quiet whine. This was bad, she hadn't felt so ashamed of herself before. Despite all the fun they'd been having, she kinda knew they shouldn't have run off like that.
"...sorry..." she murmured quietly, not looking up. She then had the presence of mind to wonder if the bear was still about, pricking her ears slightly at the thought.

The buff toned wolf herded the little ones further as they cowered. His first concern was to get them further away from the den of the angry she-wolf. "Come on you three, back to the den" was all he said. He wasn't really angry at them, was more worried, but his posture and tone, full of concern, made him sond angry. It was rare that the large male was so focused on a task and this intensity made him seem out-of-sorts...
When they had come almost back to the den he stopped took a deep breath and spoke, not looking at any of them but off into the distance. "Girls.. I don't want to be the one who brings you back to your parents dead, or tells them you are. I don't want you not to grow up. I don't want to find you hurt or mauled. I don't want to have been looking after you and fail." he said all of this in a soft tone, slightly harrowed sounding. As he spoke it he was imagining it and the thoughts devastated him. He loved pups and the thought of any coming to harm hurt his soft soul.
"Inside.." he said, nosing at all three towards the cave. It was implicit that they'd not be going out any time soon.
Aoede's tail was tucked below her legs as she listened to Ouranos and she wished almost that she could dissappear She'd only wanted to bring back some deer and now she was in trouble... Feeling slightly indignant she stomped into the den as best she could when she was nudged, not understanding the older wolf's upset - she could take care of herself! She was fine now, wasn't she!? Totally forgotten was the terror of a little while before and replaced with the indignant self-rightousness of youth.

Melete stared at the ground as Ouranos spoke to them, her small shoulders hunched over and her tail between her legs. They hadn't meant to get into danger - they were only trying to help the pack and hunt deers. Deers weren't dangerous - it wasn't their fault there was a big scary, hairy thing in that deer hole!
"...We di'nt mean to, 'Ranos..." she said in a small voice, before looking up at him beseechingly. Then she noticed Aoede stalk off into the den. Her sister didn't look very happy. Scrambling to her feet, she hurried after her sister to make sure that she was ok.

Shambala felt her gaze sidle to one side as Ouranos spoke. She couldn't help but feel a little responsible, she knew she was the eldest. Despite the fact they were all as responsible as each other, she couldn't shake the feeling it was her fault. They'd never even have looked into the hole if she hadn't made up that story about deers living in holes.
She turned away from the larger wolf as Melete and Aoede made for the den, her black tail tucked securely between her legs. This was all her fault, she just knew it.
