This is a war between Earth and Mars, far off in the future. Mecha, a humanoid looking engine of war, are the main weapons of choice.

Just over thirty years ago, Mars was little more than a colony of Earth. Mars, being plagued by low population and almost no immigration, wanted to do a human cloning program. They wanted to do a genetic mix of two parents, but speed the process up from nature. Earth had rules that made it immposible for anyone to clone a human being.
Mars, being a fully grown colony and the oldest that Earth started, wasn't happy with this law. They at first sent ambassadors to Earth to explain their plight, but Earth would not hear of cloned humans, fearing that after the cloning started, there would be no way to stop it, and other genetic experiments on humans.
Fights broke out in the Earth Alliance Congress and eventually lead to the assassination of the Martian ambassadors. The death of these ambassadors sparked a fire in the Martian colony, outraged that they were ignored and that the security forces of Earth failed to stop the deaths of the Martian ambassadors. The ambassadors became martyrs, and was the igniting spark for the Martian forces.

Earths first move to contain this sudden movement on Mars was to send in a military force and place Mars under Martial Law. Most of the citizens of Mars didn't like this, but excepted it as it was, but there was a few that banded together and got into a ground warfare. They used guerrilla tactics and became a thorn in the Earth Army's side. As the Martian forces grew more successful, so did their numbers. They eventually got their hands on a few of Earth's mecha units.
They armed themselves with these units and made the first Martian Armored Corps. Led by a cunning leader, the Martian forces fought the Earth, and eventually pushed them off the planet. Earth proceeded to lose ground by the Martian commander's tactics of hit and run. Eventually the Earth gave the Martian Colony their freedom to do what they wanted, and to set up an independent government.
