It was starting to get late and the chief photography editor of the university newspaper was no where to be found. Sighing a little, Ash finally gave up hope that she or any of the other photographers might show up to do the layout. She hoped the girl was alright. It wasn't like her to miss the evening before the paper went to print. Sitting at the computer, she smiled and waved good bye as slowly the room started to empty out. She knew layouts were not necessarily fun to do, but they were even less so when you had to do them yourself. Taking a break, she removed her glasses and rubbed her eyes. She was so ready to just go home and get some sleep

Jakov was slightly irritated. Not one, but two of his repoters had sent him below average articles and now he was going to have to take their research and re-write.

He had been looking forward to a quiet evening in, but now he was going to have to spend it in front of a computer screen.
"Ryhs." He said as he walked through the doorway and over to the computer in front of her. "What are you doing here so late?" He asked as he switched the computer on and opened his bag.

Ash sighed a little at the sound of her editor's voice. Replacing her glasses on the bridge of her nose, she swept her bangs to the side and smiled sheepishly at him.
"I came to help with the layout and no one has shown up. So I've been putting it all together slowly for you," she smiled and returned her eyes to the screen in front of her. He was not usually a happy camper the night before the paper went to print. She wasn't really looking forward to what his reaction to her news would be.

Jak raised an eyebrow at her news and shook his head.
"I hate these morons who sign up purely for extra credit." He said with a death glare at his computer. "I have to type up two articles because they are so incompetant."

He took his hat from his head and placed it next to the keyboard and waiting for Word to open.
"Let me know if you need any help."

Sometimes it seemed like he was the only one who cared that the student body got to express their views.

"I will," she replied and returned to the task at hand with a sigh. After a solid thirty minutes passed in a silence punctuated by the sounds of his typing, Ash sat back in frustration. She couldn't get one of the photos to fit onto the page properly. She didn't want to interrupt him, but she wasn't sure if she should nix the photo or not.

"Um... Jakov... I'm having a little trouble," she said, glancing around the computer to look at him.

Jakov looked up and stood a little wearily. As if he didn't have enough to do.
"What's wrong?" he asked as he leant on the back of her chair and peered over her shoulder. "It's looking fine to me."

"This photo," she said, pointing to it with her mouse. "It will not fit properly on the page. It pushes the text down too far, and I can't crop it. It would lose its meaning if I did. But I nix it then we will have a large space to fill," she said softly, glancing up at him, then back to her computer.

Jak looked at the picture and the page it was supposed to go on. Leaning over to move the mouse around and flick through the issue.
"Hmm. It's a damn good picture. I don't want to lose it. Do you have a couple of different yet equally focused ones? I can ditch one of the s**t stories I'm saving and we can have a picture page?"

Removing her hand from the mouse as he reached for it, Ash sat patiently and watched him flick through the pages on the screen. Smiling brightly at his suggestion, she looked back up at him and nodded.

"I do. Though they're on my camera and not the school one," she smiled and bent down to dig in her bag for a moment until she was able to produce her camera. Setting it to the display, she handed it up to him. "Would those be okay?" she asked, watching his expression.

Jak looked over the pictures and nodded.
"Yeah, they are perfect." He said with a grin as he returned her camers. "You really do have a good eye." He said as he went to sit down at his computer again.

As he started to type again he had a thought and looked back up.
"How would you like to be chief picture editor?" He asked, looking round the side of the computer. "I can't have someone who ditches responsibility in such a position."

"Thank you," she smiled at the compliment and she set her camera so she could remove the memory stick. Slipping it into the computer's drive, she opened the file and didn't notice that he had stopped typing again. Searching for the photos she wanted to use, she blinked and leaned over again to look at him.

"A-Are you serious? I mean... I'm just a freshman. Isn't that usually a job for an upperclassman?" she asked.

Jakov laughed and shook his head.
"The job is for a person who is worthy of it. You, Ms Ryhs are more worthy than that airhead."

Smirking he turned back to his computer and continued to work on the article.
"That is unless you don't want the position, the credit and the experience?"

Ash blushed a little and sat back in her seat again, staring at her screen. She smirked at his final words and slowly reached out to start copying the necessary photos from her memory stick. It would be great experience and would look so good on paper. Especially for her major.

"I'd love to. But only if you're sure," she smiled as she started moving things around to accomodate a page for pictures. Outwards she was calm and collected, but inwards she was fairly bouncing. She had never had such an important opportunity be afforded to her before.

Jakov laughed again.
"Of course I am sure. You are an artist. You care about what you do. You are more than qualified."

He smirked and returned to his article again. He was having to write it all almost from scratch. There was no way he was letting the original author take the credit for this one.

"Thank you Jakov. I really appreciate this," she smiled and continued to work on the layout. Her earlier weariness was gone now, and she felt renewed as she worked on the paper. It truly paid off being a hard worker in the end, she thought with a smirk.
