Hi, Hi. I have been wondering for a while what you all have thought about apparently one of the world class music academies, Sibelius and it's vocal department as I've had a dream for as long as I can remember of entering but all their website tells me is you must be talented enough, nothing like intonation, diction or anything... As well, what can be told about Helsinki and the surrounding areas.. as well, how often is Svenska and english used/heard as compared to Suomi?

Well, since I'm a music student myself, I think I can answer your questions here...

Sibelius Academy is the top school in Finland when it comes to music degrees, since it's the only university-level music school we have. However, other schools (polytechnics with music departments) may also provide very good professional music education - depends mainly on teachers you prefer.

(For example, many Cello players prefer Turku Polytechnic to Sibelius Academy and many Flute players and Trumpet players prefer Lahti Polytechnic, because of the teachers there.)

I don't know about the foreign music degrees, and how they are compared to our Finnish ones. But there are strict and pretty hard entrance exams to students who wish to enter the Sibelius Academy (as well as any other music school that educates professional musicians for that matter). However, I don't know how much they apply with exchange students and how they are ranked out. You should propably just contact the school and someone in charge of their Foregn Affairs to get more precise information.

Swedish is used most on the West coast of Finland. But you hear it occasionally in Helsinki too. But most people there (even the Finnish Swedish) use Finnish, unless they are talking to eachother. Also the Swedish language is more or less a mixture of Swedish and Finnish nowadays.

I hope this answered your questions.

Classical singing? We have many good singers in our school, and I have understood that our number one teacher, Sirkka Parviainen, is quite known and well liked. At least her students are doing well in national competitions here. ^^
