I know it's like...eight days after the start of NaNo, but I was just wondering about this. Does anyone stick stuff from real life into your stories when you just need something random? Like over here, it's been raining for the past few days, so they started off in a city in the middle of the rainy season. And I just finished eating a biscuit, and now I get the oddest feeling that one of my characters will be eating one before long...

Yes, actually I do. Like...I want it to be winter now, so its winter in my book. One of the characters is based on a real person, and some of the twists and turns of the plot are based on reall life happenings.

One of my favorite quotes that I think applies really well to this is "you can't have imagination without memory."

Most of my story is based on things that have happened in my life, or in my friends lifes. It just makes it easier to write, because I know exactly how to describe the setting and the character's feelings. Alot of the characters are based on my friends as well (they don't know that though,) so if one of them says something funny in school or does something really stupid in a lesson, I put that in the story, because I know it won't be out of character for them.

I do this all the time. Like a conversation I had with my lab partner yesterday about the best ways to die (it's death by blimp, by the way) is going in. And SO many in-jokes between my best friend and I are involved.

Pretty much every day I see or hear something and go "WOW! That should be in my story!" XD

Sure do. Do it all the time. My main protagonist's parents are based off my own, though slightly exaggerated for the sake of the story. One of the co-protagonists has his room layed out like my brother's room. Atleast three other characters have personalities inspired by people I actually know. I also like to sneak in cameos from my other stories that have yet to be written.

I do get inspired by many things in real life, or think of plot points based on things that happen in other series, but I never actually write anything from them. The story I have now can't really fit anything 'modern', so it would be rather difficult.

It's really easy to stick things that have happened to you into the story, and it's great to write what you know. A word of caution though, if you are serious about your story and would like to one day get it published - CHANGE THINGS. Receiving inspiration from real life events is wonderful because you know how you felt and you are able to provide great descriptions, but what you really should be doing is translating your emotions into different situations for your main character.

This is a word of caution especially those (I'm guessing young) users who mentioned using other people's lives as inspiration - if your novel goes anywhere, you will have to go back and edit the hell out of it. One word: lawsuit.

I stick things I learned into my stories. I stick in a lot more of my real life for stories in modern times, but my Nano story is some vague time period of 1700-ish-ish. The main character is what happens when I absorb AP psychology... He is almost completely inable to feel any emotion and pain so he's a bit of a whack job...

This was in the middle of NaNo: I was walking to a friend's house, and along the way is a small cinema. As I passed it, I couldn't help but notice an employee from the cinema sweeping the sidewalk. Right then, I got some pretty screwed up story ideas that, one way or another, ended up with my character dying in a gruesome fashion.

Ooh, and that one time I was walking down the sidewalk for the same reason and saw two boys riding a single bike. You know, with one on the back pegs? I suddenly had the urge to stick my characters in that position.

See?! I can't walk down the street without something like this happening. Geez, something mundane might bring about an entire novel in my overactive mind!
