Larainne had just come over to the vast mansion after dropping something off at Mr. Isaiah’s place. This three story abode was much grander and more extravagant than the previous home.
The box in her hands let out a high pitched chirp that made her look down. “Don’t worry little one, I’m saw Taji and her family will take care of you,” It was then that thought actually hit her, would they really be able to take care of a new pet? Lara shook her head, ah well too late now.

Carefully Lara opened the box, making sure she had a firm hold of the creatures lead before hand and let it climb out. Lara had to cover her eyes slightly from the brightness the stars on the feathers of the animal but the stars soon lost their intensity as it’s senses adjusted to the new surrounding. Lara deliberately looked it in the eye and spoke with authority in her voice so that the creature would do as it was told. “ No I need you to fly over to the door and wait for some people to come out, their very nice I believe so don’t bite them,” with that Lara tied a small gift card to its collar and let her grip on the harness slip till she was no longer holding it. The bird type creature did as it was told and gave Lara a meaningful look as she left as if to say she could go now. Patiently it waited for said ‘nice people’ to open the door.

Taji's first word was "BAM". So was her second, and her third, and the longest coherent sentence she had ever formed preceded the most vicious attack with a fist upon Rhine's foot that he had ever experienced.

Consequently, her next word was "Sorry", and she greatly enjoyed alternating between the two of them. For a while, Taji's whole world was divided into things that could be "Bam!"ed and the things she had to say "Sorry..." for bamming. Everything in between was filled in with long bursts of babbling nonsense, which along the way turned into "cookie", "want", "eat", and "now".

Furthermore she had started to walk -- first across the room and into her father's arms (which wasn't really her maiden voyage but, that was okay, he didn't have to know) and then into walls. When she finally figured out that there were spaces in the walls for her to pass between, doors suddenly became a very precious commodity, and their ability to latch closed so that she could not push them open was an ability long forgotten that soon came to be revered.

Soon came a growth spurt that rendered all of her brothers' handmedowns obsolete. Thankfully, due to the generosity of Madeleine's family over Christmas, the availability of clothing was not the issue -- their fit on her was. The maid did not regularly sew, Madeleine had fallen out of practice, and Lysander never learned at all, but between the three of them learning and relearning their way with a needle, they managed to alter the wardrobe enough so that Taji, skinny and wirey, would not appear to be wearing very colorful elephant skins.

Conversely, her weight was a confusing issue for her father, who, upon looking at his daughter, worried that she ought to eat more but, upon picking her up, thought that she should actually eat less. Madeleine, who had survived through Cianan's supreme pickiness and Rhine's tendency to eat like a garbage disposal, knew there were more productive things to worry about, like teaching her not to pick her nose in public and not to go up to random people and -- for a lack of a better way of describing it -- pulling their pants down.

"No!" came later, as Taji so far had usually voiced her disagreement by hitting something or someone. She learned the names of the colors very easily, thanks to an afternoon spent with Rhine and a new box of crayons and a coloring book. Cianan exasperatedly had to buy her a brand new coloring book and spend another afternoon teaching her their proper names, after he asked her, out of curiosity, what color she thought her own eyes were and she said "Purple!" before gleefully telling him she'd rather have his nice red eyes.

("Blue, they're blue... This is blue. Blue. This is red." "Rhine said!" "Are you going to believe Rhine, or are you going to believe me?" Rhine's dishonesty was a very hard lesson for Taji to learn, at least until he started kidnapping her various stuffed animals for use in his animatronic work and telling her that they all ran away to join the circus. Cianan was loathe to tell on his brother, but thankfully Taji found their remains herself, surreptitiously stuffed in a flowerpot outside in the garden.

She continued trusting whatever Rhine said anyway, because she didn't know what to do otherwise, but she nevertheless kept a more careful watch over her plushies from then on. Furthermore, whatever Cianan said automatically overrode whatever Rhine said, and sometimes the twins together took advantage of this, Cianan secretly contradicting an actual truth Rhine told her Just Because.

On one hand, Cianan couldn't wait for the part of her development when she would start to think for herself, but on the other hand found it very flattering. Rhine was merely annoyed that he had to actually buy his own stuffed animals, repeatedly in bulk, earning various weird looks from cashiers until he half-lied and said they were for his overly destructive younger sister. They began giving him a discount after he actually brought Taji in one day and she singlehandedly destroyed a whole snack display because she thought they were "doin' it all wronnnnggg!")

"I think you'll be using the toilet from now on, Taji."

Taji cast her eyes upwards in a dubious once-over of what she had once figured to be little more than a porcelain altar, with water in it, often prominently displayed in bathrooms, and then turned her gaze back towards her mother. Madeleine smiled down at her in a fashion that was probably meant to be reassuring. Taji was anything but.

"This is where you will 'go' from now on." Madeleine continued, not oblivious to the uneasiness that expressed itself through an uncomfortable shifting between feet and a suspicious general lack of noise. "This is what all adults use. You are a big girl now."

Something lurking deep within the bowels of the 'toilet' issued an unhappy gurgle, not unlike the kind her own tummy gave when it was unbearably empty. Its rim suddenly seemed very mouth-like, and while Taji could not see teeth, she had no doubt that they were there, somewhere, waiting.

She immediately stepped to the side and grabbed for her mother's skirt, burying her face in the woman's legs and chattering through a seemingly random stream of syllables that ended with, very firmly, "WAN' POOPYBOX."

Madeleine mentally sighed and tried to think of any kind of trial more testing than properly toilet-training a toddler. Curving the corners of her lips into a smile, she knelt down next to her daughter and, taking her by the shoulders, turned her to face the toilet.

"It's just a very big poopybox," it was only through years of practice that she even managed to form the words without wincing or giggling madly. Taji clearly thought otherwise anyway, her spine straightening defiantly against her mother's chest; her potty chair, bright red and painted with pictures of circus animals, had never dared make such odd noises. It was nice, and portable, and she could carry it on her head when it was empty and carry it outside and make poo outside when she was playing in the garden and then everyone was proud of her when they weren't trying to convince her to only keep it inside. This big white one was both rooted to the ground and wanting to eat her.

"...et paper is nearby, and it will be much easier to clean up after yourself," Madeleine was saying in the meanwhile, her voice low and comforting, but Taji interrupted with a cranky, "I fall in?!"

Her mother shook her head behind her, the beads hanging from her hairsticks clinking together. She stood up and, taking Taji's hand, led her over to the toilet. She raised the lid and set it against the back, and Taji, completely missing the point, found herself staring into the depths of the abyss.

"Hole," she pointed into the toilet but did not dare to stick her finger into the water. "Where?"

"Sewer systems and then treatment plants," said Madeleine, "Where the water goes to get clean. Do you see that you can't fall in now?"

To this Taji reluctantly agreed: her butt was probably too big. And, she thought, her demeanor rapidly brightening, there was clearly nothing in there anyway, just the water. The hole at the bottom was a little uncomfortably shadowy, but whatever was in there seemed to be sleeping. "Okay," decided Taji.

    "Okay?" Repeated her mother.

"OKAY," the young girl yelled back, one arm thrown up, fist clenched, with one thumb extended towards the ceiling. She grinned sunnily at her.

"Okay!--" and before her daughter could start again, Madeleine cleared her throat and crossed her arms over her chest, "So, you remember what to do?"

Taji thought about this. "Yes," she said finally, her arm dropping.

    "What do you do?"

"First, I... make sure I really have to go poo," Taji began slowly, her own hands folded behind her back while she toed the floor, eyes cast upward in thought, "Or wee." She deemed it necessary to stop there for confirmation, and it was only after Madeleine realized she needed to give it -- and did so -- that she continued: "Then pull down the underwear..." This was not a mistake she would be making again. "And then pull the dress up enough!" This one as well. "Then... I... Sit on the poo--the toilet."

"Very good," Madeleine smiled and closed the lid of the toilet. "It will be a little bit different in that you will have to use your steps--" They were also painted bright red, and stored right on the other side of the toilet, "--to get up."

"An' the top," Taji interjected helpfully, "Hasta be up."

Madeleine, not expecting this, skipped a beat before hastily confirming. "After you are done, you flush with this lever here... And then you will use those steps--" Taji hadn't realized she had two different sets before, "--to use the sink to wash your hands with soap. And when you are all done, if you do not make a mess, I will give you an animal cracker."

Taji, predictably, brightened at the prospect. Nothing could be frightening when there were animal crackers involved.

"Do you want to run through it, just to be sure?"

"No!" She immediately protested, mentally scoffing at the idea -- what was so hard about pushing a jiggly thing and washing her hands anyway, she was a big girl now -- and secretly half-hoping her bravery would be rewarded with an animal cracker in advance. She waited expectantly.

Her mother only sighed in relief, grateful that the ordeal seemed to be over for now. "Alright. If you need help, call me or your father, or either of your brothers. Andrea, too." The last was the only maid Taji saw around anymore, who had a preoccupation with baking cookies (fueling Taji's animal cracker supply) and pinching cheeks. She winced at the thought and agreed with the assessment that she should be the last to be called (though, really, there would be no calling at all, as she was a big girl and big girls did not need help.)

Madeleine ushered her out of the bathroom and into her bedroom, switching the light off and closing the door behind her but not allowing it to latch. "Go, go play now! There will be steps in the laundry bathroom and the basement bathroom as well, just use the one that's closest when you need to."

"Okay," said Taji, throwing one last glance over her shoulder at the toilet before the door hid it from view. It was in the dark and the shadows that she was suddenly reminded of its inherent danger, but the thought soon passed from her mind and was replaced with that of harassing Cianan and Rhine for a game of Candyland.

    User Image

As it turned out, neither of them wanted to play -- Cianan faked homework (though Taji knew he always had it done before this time of day, just before dinner) and Rhine was simply nowhere to be seen. Candyland was not much of a game with just one other person anyway, so she didn't search very hard after Cee's refusal.

The only logical and entertaining thing to do, or at least the only thing she could think of, then, would be to explore all the bathrooms and look at all the toilets. She would've started with the twin's own except the door was locked, and she had no interest in her own bathroom simply because it was hers and she could do anything she wanted in it anyway, except figure out how to turn the shower on by herself. She had little interest in her parents', either, as that was primarily where she went to take her baths anyway and it just felt weird to be up there with neither her father nor her mother present.

The only ones that remained were the ones on the first floor -- the mysterious closet-like one next to the laundry room, and the one in the guest room -- and in the basement. Barrelling out of Rhine's room and through the hallway, skidding across the loft in sock-covered feet while avoiding scattered pieces of half-completed lego sets and hopskotching over forgotten tea parties in the landing, Taji skittered down the two flights of stairs and made her way across the foyer (which, regrettably, contained nothing of her things as usual) and into the guest room.

It was the only room in the house with its walls unadorned. The entire room was white, and the floors were hardwood (also a rarity in the small mansion), reflecting the sunlight streaming through the windows on the far side of the room. A large flowering tree provided shade in the corner, overlooking a small, circular, and empty pool set into the floor there. The bed was neatly made, and all the drawers were closed and the things on top of the things containing drawers were neatly arranged, so much that she was truck with the sudden urge to wreak havoc.

Havoc was commenced by jumping on the bed while she tried to remember why she came in here in the first place -- and furthermore why the door was even open, as usually it was locked to make the room off-limits to her for this very reason. It was only when the sheets and blankets were crumpled and the pillows were halfway across the room that Taji remembered the door set into the wall across from the bed that led to the bathroom. Hopping her way to the end of the bed, Taji took a great big leap, aiming for one of the pillows but landing heavily on the bare floor instead. Carrying her momentum into skipping, she threw herself at the door, and twisting the doorknob open, promptly fell into the room.

Presently she got up. It took her a while to locate the lightswitch and a moment longer to realize that the window facing into the brightly lit day afforded her no reason to need to anyway. The toilet, sandwiched between the sink and the shower, looked very much like the one upstairs, except there were no little stairs and it was a little smaller too, skinnier maybe. This one didn't get to eat as much, whatever it was that toilets ate.

She cautiously approached it, noting with inner glee that she was indeed much bigger than it was. Her height was a strength she was eager to exploit and she employed it in her conquest of the toilet, scrambling up onto it and sitting there with her legs dangling over the sides.

Her mother wasn't around to see, but surely she'd take Taji's word for it if she did use the toilet properly, right? She wasn't sure how she was going to reach the sink -- maybe she'd steal the chair from the desk in the other room -- nor was she particularly compelled to do any kind of business on the toilet at the moment, but it was as Rhine liked to say a lot in his Loud Scary Voice: if you wait, it will come.

So she hopped off, pushed open the lid with a loud smack of porcelain against porcelain, and pulling her underwear down, climbed back on and proceeded to wait.

After a minute of absolutely nothing happening she began squirming in place and realizing just how uncomfortable this whole toilet business was. At least her poopybox was a proper chair, with none of this ridiculous holes-in-the-seat business. Largely disappointed and suddenly confused about the whole thing, Taji slid off and redressed herself before turning to stare into the toilet bowl once more. Why was there water in there anyway, and why would anyone want to poo in clean water?

She waited for the toilet to gurgle again, to reaffirm her growing rejection of it, but nothing happened some more. Growing completely bored, Taji left the bathroom after letting the toilet lid slam shut.

"You're supposed to flush when you're done," Rhine told her, flat against the wall next to the door, when she emerged. He gave her a Look and Taji refused to meet his gaze, instead peering over his shoulder at the closet door -- open when it hadn't been before. He was probably doing more of his experiments in there.

"Well, that's okay," he continued airily, inwardly grumpy over her complete lack of attention or amazement at his appearance, "It's probably best that you got out before you could. The monster in the drain and all."

He had her at the beginning of the last part. "Monster?" Taji echoed warily, blinking at him before turning to peer suspiciously at the toilet through the doorway.

"Yeah. See, it's harmless as long as it's completely submerged -- the weight of the water keeping it pinned..." He slipped past her and into the bathroom, casually sauntering towards the space between the sink and the shower. Taji found herself suddenly dreading every step he took. "But when you flush, of course, the water spins down the drain until the bowl empties. So you always have to vacate the room before that happens, because if you don't..."

He paused a minute, allowing the true horror of the situation to dawn upon her, before pressing down on the lever. She could not see what was happening in the toilet but the sound effects were gruesome enough to give her some idea -- it gurgled and sputtered and hacked and wheezed and all the water was going somewhere else, leaving the thing living in the hole at the bottom the chance to surface--

"AAAAAAGH," was Taji's stance upon the subject, and she immediately fled. This was the end of her bathroom exploration for the day, and probably (she considered this briefly while pinned to the floor beneath her bed, fiercely shivering and hoping Rhine had made it out as well, the stupid poopyhead) forever as well.

    User Image

Unfortunately, three hours later, she really, really needed to go.

She searched in vain for her loyal poopybox, even tearing through her parents' individual closets at high speeds in between rounds of the gotta-go-gotta-go dance, but it was nowhere to be found, and she had to pass by their likewise individual toilets to even get there. Their rims were curled up in self-satisfied smiles, knowing they were her only resort.

Her brother -- her non-idiotic one -- was her next resort, but Cianan was not in his room, or in Rhine's, or in any of the closets on the second floor. She didn't have enough time to thoroughly search upstairs again, so she fled down, skittering once more over the two flights of stairs leading into the breakfast room.

Her mother was there entertaining a guest. Taji could only see the back of the other woman's head and didn't care who she was anyway, just that she was in the way. Immediately darting forward and latching herself to her mother's leg, Taji tugged on it fiercely and whined, "Mama, I gotta GOOOO."

"Then do so," said Madeleine, only barely hesitating in raising her cup of tea to her lips. She had given up long ago at being embarassed at any of her three children's antics, and her only recognition of the direness of the situation was an apologetic smile to the woman across from her, Miss Bellmonte.

To Taji she said, "The bathroom is just down the hall, it's alright."

"No!" Wailed Taji, who couldn't count to five yet but knew very clearly when she was being brushed off. She didn't want permission, she wanted her mother to get her sword and defend her against the evil creature lurking deep within the bathroom. "The monster is going to eat me!"

"What monster?" Started Madeleine confusedly, but Taji also recognized a lost cause when she saw one. There was simply no time to admonish her for not warning her of the drain monster, and she absolutely refused to have an accident in front of an audience. Continuing to warble incoherently at the top of her lungs -- in hopes her inhumanly awful cries would ward away the beast -- she immediately scampered from the room and down the hall. Madeleine waited for the telltale click of the lightswitch and Taji's signature slam of the door before exhaling and returning to her conversation.

Taji had been in this bathroom before, mostly to wash up when she was too dirty to go trekking through the rest of the house. She had even stood innocently upon the top of the toilet in order to easily reach the sink, unaware of the dangers that lurked beneath her feet. She stared in horror at the toilet in the corner and then at the sheer unavailability of space in the half-bathroom, for all of three seconds before stepping forward and flinging the toilet seat open.

    User Image

And so Lysander, finally emerging from his office at last and meandering in the general direction of the kitchen, found his legs mauled by a hyperactive three-year-old.

"DADDY, DADDY," came the war cry of his attacker, throwing her arms around his legs and sitting on his feet. Being rendered immobile was not a condition he liked to surrender to under any circumstances, but he was completely at a loss as to how to get her to let go, or how to react to her next statement.

"I made a poopy," said Taji proudly, beaming up at him from her seat.

"Oh," said Lysander finally, eyebrows knitting together, previously unaware of the fact that this was something to be heralded. Something twisted in the pit of his stomach. "Where?" And, even more hesitantly, "Have you changed,,,?"

"Nooooo," said Taji, who was very used to her father's odd trains of thoughts and questions. "In the toilet. I washed my hands too! But," she lowered her voice as Lysander breathed a silent sigh of relief, "I dinn't flush, 'cos of the monster..."

Monsters were something he could more easily deal with. He bent down a little, as far as Taji's position would allow him, and offered her his arms; she stood up and gave a little hop and he caught her midair. Swinging her up and half-over his shoulder, he began tracing a path to the half-bathroom instead, trying to remember how to defeat the same drain monster that had once haunted one of his sons.

"MAMA," called Taji over his shoulder as they passed by the junction in the hallway, "I DID IT. I MADE A POO. I GET AN AMINAL CRACKER."
