My first so bear with me!

Get 3 good shades of whatever color you want. Here's mine:
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Paste it onto your base if you need it.

1. Get a base like from GavSim and paste or draw the 3 colors on somewhere.
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

2. Make a new layer and call it "Dress"

3. Then zoom in and grab the dark color and draw in the shading with an one pixel brush like this:
User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

4. Then, draw in the dress with the same color:

After that grab the light color(yes the light one not the middle) and fill the dress in:

5. NOW grab the middle color and draw in the base color but leave some of the light color as highlights like this:

6. Looks wierd right? well lock the transparency and grab the BLUR tool and make it soft brush size 17 or 19px. Make the strength 50 or so and blur it at least 3 times on the whole dress.:

7. Now, grab the SMUDGE tool with the size 13px brush and smudge until it looks kinda like this:

8. Now unlock the transparency and grab a nice dark shade of the color and draw an outline of the dress with a 1 px brush:

9. Just add something to go with it and..

10. Upload it!

Hahaha. xd

You might want to add in more shadows and highlights. I'm not trying to suddenly act like I can do avatar edits, but I've been doing some now and they look pretty good! Thanks to you! heart

*claps*
You earn Meave's applaud....

your tutorial is very special, lol. It is the ONLY one Meave had seen that start with SHADES instead of SHAPE. And the preparation work is not finding reference is finding colours. lol. Actually, to Meave it is a good way of forcing creativity out of one person's head, instead of keep copying cosplay.*nods* Edits is an art too, originality is your name.

GIMP is a good tool to use, if it had not been such a 'king' that needs to open so many windows for its panels. scream

Anyway, you have a different start of point, so Meave hope to see more things out of it. Meave is gonna use that method to force out Meave's 2007 limited dress collection. XD

Again! Originality!
