Are you sure that's safe? There's a bunch of things you need to consider before asking that question. Like for one, how are you going to get permission from the convention's staff?

You stole my idea!!!!!

Well, you kinda did, since I thought of this like 5 months ago, but that's cool... Great artistic minds think alike I guess...

I suppose I'll tell you what I'm planning to do to pull this off- since I'll probably never get around to it anyway, so what the hell, you'd might as well have fun. I was using Sculpey to make my little clay animals.. You might choose to use something different, but at any rate, the clay will need to be baked. Leave a little hole in the back of it, or in the underside. When it's hardened, take a firework(not a huge one, but a little sparkler or something; something that can fit into the little hole you've made, and that won't hurt bystanders when it goes off), and stick it into the hole. Put more clay- unhardened this time of course- around it, and make sure you pack it in there really good. You won't be able to rebake it, so the clay around there will have to stay unhardened, unless you want your house catching on fire when you try to bake the firework. So pack the unhardened clay really well to make the firework stay... And make sure that when you do this, the fuse remains hanging out of the sculpture, and doesn't get clay all over it. The fuse will need a clear path to the firework when you light it on the big day, or your 'art' isn't going to explode.

Yeah, that's all I could come up with... Oh, but if you do use this, or if anyone here in the guild does, please, give full credit to me, Kristen B., from NJ... I worked long and hard on this idea... and I'm sure there are other methods other people have come up with, but I've never seen any other Deidara cosplayers with actual exploding clay. So please, give me credit if you do this or any variation of this idea?!

But will the clay be too thick for a little tiny firecracker to explode in it?

Well... I suppose it depends on how thick you make it. I was going to make Deidara's smaller sculptures, the spiders, and the littler birds, so I didn't really even take that into consideration. Any sized firework could blow up those smaller sculptures, for sure..

But for any of the larger ones, like that bigger, weird looking bird Dei uses for the C3 explosion, I guess a slightly larger firework would need to be used.

But.. I've seen pretty big sparklers, and other 'non- dangerous' fireworks, both in small sizes, and in larger sizes that would need to be used.

And even the smaller ones, depending on what type you get(obviously not a small sparkler, but like a regular firework), should be able to blow up a significant thickness of clay.

Oh, I see. I wouldn't want to use Number 18 for a good bomb... But adding more gunpowder would work too, would it not?

That's totally awesome =]
Would you mind if I use your idea?
I'd like to try it out.

Nah, it's fine if you use it... I posted it here so anybody in the guild can, since we all are obsessed with Deidara.... I just want some credit given to me for the idea, if you use it at a con or somewhere else where a lot of people will see. But yeah, go right ahead! And tell me how it works out. biggrin

make your little sculpture, bake it to make it hard, then lay it on the grond, get a gun, point it directly straight down, then boom! it'll either....
1.EXPLODE like planned
or
2.have a hole
or
3.bounce of the clay <----weird!
