i've created the backbone MySQL structure and PHP direct inputs for a web based(ticking) game i developping, i have come to a standstill in what exactly to use for the ticker itself, php, C++ , shell script or some other language? any suggestions would be appreciated. The ticker is gonna be very heavy in data retrieval through MySQL queries, data comaring, manipulation and inserting alot of MySQL queries and have to do this within a second or two.

What do you mean by "Ticker"?

But it sounds like you'll want to try AJAX. 3nodding

Tick based games are direct input updated except at a determined period of time, or the "tick time" and at that time, all information is updated, battles are faught, information for top stats is updated and all dynamic functions are updated. and it could , if the game is popular, require as much as 1000+ MySQL queries per tick, has to be done in less than 10 seconds too.

Ah, like FPS in game programming. I've been doing that in python.
You can make it do about 20 things 30+ times a second. wink

But for web based, you might be wanting Java or flash?

Or like I said, JavaScript/AJAX.

hmm i think ill try compiled C++ program first, then Python , the code shouldn't be hard to migrate between python/perl/php to test for speed if C++ is too slow. thanks for the info. but AJAX can't be used , it's not a user triggered event, it's a server triggered one using crontab.
