How do you get people to read past Obsidian Butterfly?
How do you make them read Narcissus in Chains? Or even past Narcissus in Chains?
What do you tell them?

lol
Sorry, I just read on another board. A few of us who are avid fans of the books talked a few people into actually giving the series a go and one person just said that they enjoyed OB but then took one look at NiC and gave it up.
Thankfully, they still like Merry. They think Merry is still overpowered to the extreme but makes it up for it in the fact that she still bows to the Queen.

I don't know, some people really like sex, sex and more sex. I still prefer the style of the books prior to NiC, but I am an eternal optimist, I just keep hoping that LKH will eventually get the sex out of her system and wake up one day saying, more violence! more story!

Well, the people I know who are hooked on the series were so addicted by the time they got there that they just kept reading.

Personally, I prefer the earlier books too, but I have a feeling that this is just sort of a phase... domokun

My angle all depends on who I'm recommending the series to. If it's someone I know is a fan of sex in stories I'll just tell them things like "It's really good and lately there's been tons of kinky sex between characters". If it's someone I know who really isn't into that I'll drop them a little "Beware, in later books the kink factor sky rockets" as warning.

As for reading past OB in particular I tell them NiC still has a good story line and that it's sorta the gateway between classic Anita and the new kid wearing her face. You should definately read it if you plan to pick up other novels later on.

Yes, well, what I do is generally restricted to, "Take this book. Read." ::hands over book:: "And this. And this. And this." etc, etc. I've yet to have someone tell me that they had to stop - but this could be because most of them are hormonal teens who like blood, violence, and sex.

And yeah, if we ever talk about it, we're going with the "I hope it's just a phase," thing.

I'm not saying I love the whole "sex sex sex!" thing, but it does fit into the story well. *shrug* But it would be good to have more of a plot than Richard, Jean Claude and Anita thing. (I'm still on OB)

Personally I don't mind the new bit of sex, but there are a few bits where...well, yeah...

Since I'm not supposed to be recommending such material to my friends, I simply shove all the books into their arms. A few of my friends stopped at OB, but most of them have continued on. Maybe it is that teenager sex drive. ^_^

Give them a warning that there's a huge amount of sex in the later books. Some won't care for it, but some might just gobble it up in heaps. But keep insisting that it's still good once ya look over the naughty bits.

well NiC is were the freaky BD/SM sex starts picking up and some people aren't into that...
i guess you can tell people that it just goes back to ...um...well...i guess
less freaky sex in the other books ^^

My neighbor is the one who introduced me to LKH with the Gentry series and I read those books in like 4-5 days and loved them so much that I went and found the Blake books and was going through them on average about 2-3 a week so my neighbor gave me her copy of NiC cause she didn't like those series of books but I am hooked forever on both sets and I just tell people how GREAt they are and that they do have lots of sex. My oldest daughter just finished reading my Gentry books and is going crazy waiting for the next one but is now starting to read the Blake books to kill time.

I usually don't recommend. I tend to study people's reading habits before suggesting a book. That way I don't freak out super-religious friends with books about the big bang theory and I don't freak out conservatives with Anita and Merry books. Another reason I rarely suggest books past OB is because they were a bit disappointing. NiC lacked cohesion. CS was okay. ID, I gave up and skim read.

I liked all the books, really. Even the later ones! The sex just flowed with story. So it wasn't like the sex suddenly just fell out of the blue sky. As long as she writes more, I'll be happy, sex or not.

I tell my friends to read the first book and if they get hooked on that, then I start supplying them with Anita shots. They're just so great! However, if, after the two books, they're still "meh" about it, then I just kinda give up. sad

I usuall start talking about JC......and that gets girls to read them......i'v hoked 3 people by now. I generaly tell people to expect sex after the 4th(?) book. That way if they really don't want to read it they can stop.....but they havent yet. blaugh
