What server are you on?

As for your job, you really need to decide what part you want to play in a party. Healer? White, Red, Summoner, probably. Nuke? Black. Damage dealer? Just about any of the physical classes. Tank? Paladin or Ninja. Support? Probably Red, Bard or Summoner.

And if anyone disagrees with me, I'm more than happy to explain why I think certain classes are good for what. Although some of those choices are merely based on what others have told me, not personal experience.

Me, personally, I like the Dark Knight/Warrior combination for a party, or Dark Knight/Red Mage for soloing. Personal preference. mrgreen I'd Dark Knight/Red Mage for parties, but nobody invites me when I have that combination up.

ETA: Although Warrior/Red Mage was apparently an acceptable combination until I got some advanced classes.
ETA2: Wow, I actually had an opinion on something. eek

lol at the cl@$$ filter

Like Subcai says, why don't you tell us what it is you enjoy doing in the game so we can give you some sounder advice. "Which job shall I pick" is a bit of a broad question XD

Obviously the answer is "Whichever one you like!"

lots of DDs sub thf unfortunately ~ its very handy for additional damage. Exceptions might be war/nin, or of course a mage job such as smn or blm smile

When you first start out on war/nin you might be doing a fair bit of tanking but that stops when you go beyond 30ish and you can concentrate on DD-ness.

In any case, all jobs need a leveled subjob and there are worse things to lvl than thf (i.e ninja up to 37 XD)

There don't seem to be many Sylph players around.

Ninja is an expensive job to level because of the tools they need for spells, but it can be a lot of fun from what I've seen.

I'll admit, I haven't played the Samurai much, so I can't speak for the ability of Samurais to pump out damage.

A well equipped Dark Knight or Warrior, on the other hand, is death on two legs. So is the Beastmaster with the right pet, but you'll run into stereotype issues if you try to play one of them, since many people dislike partying with Beastmasters.

My personal recommendation would be for the Dark Knight/Warrior combination, but that's based purely on how I like to play. Damage dealer, I'm not expected to Tank as a Dark Knight, and I get to play with a little bit of magic, but I can pull hate from the Tank if I need to. Provoke + Last Resort = Pain. For me.

My opinion, and the advice is worth exactly what you paid for it. wink

Scythes in TP burn parties sure do. confused

Don't pick a job based on the subjobs you have to level, because you only level it to 37. Sometimes you'll end up like playing the subjob anyway, like I did with NIN.

If you want to play SAM, here's the path I suggest you to take:
MNK to 18, unlock subjobs, WAR/MNK to 37, unlock SAM, SAM/WAR to 75.
Basically, you can do that and never worry about subjobs. But it's better to be versatile and level several subjobs. In which case, you should level THF and RNG as well for subjobs. Also, don't be lazy and think "I'm not going to put effort into playing this job because it's just a subjob." All you'll be doing is making it harder and longer to get back to playing your main.

It's quite possible, but for the static I'm in I'm better off being able to pull the hate from our Tank quickly if she gets in the red.

So, to make a point, choice of job requires you to way a number of factors. Sio's advice seems pretty sound, especially since you've taken the Samurai out of the closet and used it some.
