I'm going to be making Xiao Qiao for NDK next year, so i still have plenty of time.. but i would like time since i dont know how often people check these..
im wondering if there are any cheap, fairly light weight materials i can use to make the fan. i hope to make it an actual opening and closing fan. hopefully i dont have to order them like wonderflex.

shoot...there was a girl with a huge temari fan too and I forgot to ask her...it looked like some sort of stiff muslim with the circles painted on it, and it made a really nice snapping sound when opened, but I could be totally wrong.

i have seen that some ppl have brought some wall fans, dismantled them, and then used some fabric or some resistant paper for making the shape of the fan... sadly, wall fans go on the heavy side...

My little 12 year old sis had a wall fan that bought her for her Temari costume. It was almost as tall as me, and I'm 5'8", yet she said it wasn't heavy at all... and it wasn't. When I bought it, I had to carry it around Chinatown, and then walk Uptown to go to Macy's in NYC and carried it for 3 hours with no problems and a huge wooden wall hanging also in my hands. You just have to go looking, and feel the fans- some were heavy, and some weren't. Depends on the type of wood I guess, because they were all the same size. Just try different shops. My sis carried it for hours and had no probs. It's easier to buy than make big fans..

Since its a fan, you might want to try paper mache but you will have to fold it and spray paint it. Wonderflex, I dunno since its more for armor, sworlds, and roundish things.

Balsa wood is light, but it may be too fragile for this. Whatever you do, don't use cardboard.
