I received my special edition Negima! 301: Xebec still sucks and Funimation isn't beyond reproach either the other day. I don't understand why the Ayaka figurine came with one of Chigusa's little monkey shikigamis.
Anyway, episode 10 was painful to watch. Not literally physically painful, but close. Episode 10, c** tacent clamant (When they are silent they are shouting), roughly parallels chapter 12 in that it reveals Chisames alter-ego Chiu. Xebec manages to drag an entire episode out of that relatively minor plot point. I understood the purpose of the chapter was to show that Chisame hated the zany and abnormal behavior of her classmates while being rather far from ordinary herself, and also being ultimately powerless to resist Negi's good intentions. Xebec manages to get the point across, but gets distracted with fanservice so excessive that it supercedes the plot but fails to reach the quality of the manga. Also, at one point during the dub, when Chisame is riding the train to her apartment, the old ladies comment on her odd hair color. Funimation vs. Xebec - winner: everyone but Xebec.
Episodes 11 and 12 were the Baka Rangers expedition to Library Island. Those two episodes were fine, but they didn't improve on the manga, or even fully meet it's expectations. Time constraints seem to have cut out the question-blocked doors for escaping up the stairwell which implied the book made the girls smarter, and only the Baka Rangers were late for the test (Konoka, Nodoka, and Haruna were with them in the manga), so 2-A only made it to 2nd place after the adjustments. Funimation dropped the ball here, though. I'm still annoyed that they opted for "Dummy Force" in the dub, but the real fudge-up was during the Twister game. In the dub, the golem quizes the girls on Latin. xd The problem: the questions were completely irrelevant to the images shown. Funimation would have done better if they'd made the golem quiz the girls on Japanese. Having the girls spell out difficult in Latin audially and seeing them choose Japanese characters for it is just stupid.
The final episode on the disc features Negi and Konoka's "secret date" shopping for a present for Asuna. Again, it wasn't bad, but it was pulled off better in the manga. Firstly, the original purpose of the trip was to find a birthday present for Asuna. Because the way the series ends, Asuna's birthday needed to be moved, thus a new motivation needed to be created. So the episode begins by having Konoka down a catalyst potion, getting all funny, gushing over Negi, and accidently trashing the room (destroying Asuna's alarm clock in the process). Fine. This also gives Asuna the slight suspiscion that Konoka might actually make a move on Negi. The manga achieved this by tempting Konoka with a pactio card of her own. Unfortunately, pactio cards are never mentioned, and despite the incredible opportunity in the early portion of the episode, there are no efforts made to hint at Konoka's mage abilities. Regarding Funimations dub I have two comments: Firstly, Madoka. The manga notes explicitly that her voice is husky. Funimation gives her a typical, high girly voice. Yeah, that's well suited for the one stuck playing the guy. Two, they make fun of the fugly alarm clock Negi and Konoka pick out for Asuna. Xebec sucks, Funimation gets brownie points for making fun of them.

Dark_Mage13 Is it the American version and if so did it come with any pactio cards question Yes to the first, no to the second. Frankly, I'm glad it didn't come with the pactio cards, since the manga version ones haven't all been completed yet and the ones that came with the Japanese release of the anime were ugly.
