I got a Pear from Hugh and I was so excited (my internet isn't compatable with WiFi, so I can't connect unless I change my internets). I planted it and it wilted and died.
I was told you don't have to water fruit trees, is this incorrect?

Nyet.
You don't have to water trees, but trees also don't have a 0 chance of growing. Also there are some places that won't grow trees.
Coconut trees can only grow near the beaches (not in the sand).
No trees will grow too close to the signposts since they interfere with new houses.
I think that trees have a higher chance of failing if they are too close to the water, either the river or the ocean.

Trees can not touch the rock areas (in front of your house, the town hall, Nook and AS), be right beside the river, ocean, or cliffs, can not be too close to any building or other tree, can not be by a signpost, and I recomend not stomping all over it. To keep your villagers away, stand guard with your ax. xd

No wonder my apple tree has died sweatdrop
I think my peach tree also died but I have at least two Palm trees and my Orange and Cherry trees took root. I've been chopping down loads of my pear trees to make room for my planned Orange Groves.
(I know I said I have all five fruits but I now dont since the Apple and Peach trees died lol!)

From what I've heard, too, You shouldn't plant them when it's raining or going to rain the first day of planting... Not sure if that matters, though.

I was told you don't have to water fruit trees, is this incorrect? You do I recommend you cut a tree down and grow the tree there
