This is the signup/discussion thread for the upcoming COM Boardfic: The Seven Spacefarers. The fic will be a sci-fi adventure loosely inspired by Akira Kurosawa's "The Seven Samurai"
World:
The Ante Diaspora Correct (ADC) calendar was established in the year of our lord 2171, when the first message from the colony ship Golden Dream arrived on Earth. Since then humanity has expanded to over 300 planets and is spread across 400 systems. The Inner Worlds are rich and secure, but out here on the Fringe, men and women live on a razors edge. Firepower is the only law to be had. Pirates often rule entire systems. Only a few brave souls struggle to maintain order...
On September 21, 316 ADC, contact was lost with the Kyoto System. Note was made of this by several organizations, but trouble loomed elsewhere and the people of Kyoto's Aiko Agricultural Colony were left to fend for themselves.
It would be several years before contact was reestablished.
Characters:
This fic will be built around characters created and submitted by you, the Members of the Church of Mod. I cannot promise to use every submission, but will select characters based on their utility in the story and the quality of the information given to me about the character. There will be NO aliens.
Stats:
Basic information is required of every character submitted.
Full name: Callsign/nickname: Age: Gender: Occupation: (Free Trader, Mercenary, Privateer, Pirate, Naval captain, Courier, Crewman, Guild Shipmaster, Mechanic, Aiko Farmer, Bounty Hunter, Miner) Basic description of character: Any past history you want included: Preferences for your ship: (if you are submitting a pilot/captain type character)
Example character:
Full name: Shelly Rei O'Neill Callsign/nickname: Aiya! Age: 25 Gender: Female Occupation: Free Trader Basic description of character: Short, brown skin, short black hair, green eyes. Any past history you want included: A Free Trader since age 21, Rei, as she prefers to be called, served on the Starship WindDancer before acquiring her own ship, the Safrass. Preferences for your ship: Customized Light Freighter, heavily armed.
(Yes, Rommy aproved this)
THE SEVEN (CENTRAL CHARCTERS):
1&2) The Bondmates. Trained together from a young age, these two Warriors have been conditioned to fight in perfect tandem as a part of the Confederation's elite Maurauder fighter-squadrons. One of these two will leave behind family to follow her/his Bondmate again into battle. (Wonder if i can tap Eter for this...)
3) The Watcher. Extremely observant and obviously a veteran, this one jokes much but says little. Has a tendency to "read minds", and is razor quick.
4) The Old Miner. No so much old in age as in outlook, part of a Dying breed of idependent asteriod miners (Belters). A iniate of the "Polished Stone School", this one has precision that few can match.
5) The Children. (Probably tapping SJR and Kyraa for this) Youngster(s) in awe of character 1, and who wish(es) to learn the ways of an Elite Spacefarer. The most innocent amoung the Seven (Counts only as one.)
6) The Pretender. Claims to be a Elite Spacefarer, and though (s)he has teh potential and drive, isn;t quite there. clearly of humble orgins, but refuses to admit the fact (Will probably be in command of Carrier)
7) The Old Hand. Veteran, elite, and unmatched in skill, this one travels the most dangerous regions of the fringe to test his/her skills against the worst that fate can bring.
Go ahead and apply... razz
PLEASE DO NOT TELL ME WHAT WEAPONS YOU HAVE, WE WILL WORK THAT OOUT LATER TO AVOID CONTINUITY BUSTING. THANK YOU.

*is interested*
Will you be writing the entire fic by yourself, incidentially?
Anyway, here's a character proposition.
Full name: Lewis Howell Callsign/nickname: none Age: 58 Gender: male Occupation: Aiko Agricultural Colony Administrator Basic description of character: Howell is and old man, and is beginning to look it. He has spent too much time in Kyoto, away from the rejuvination clinics of the Inner Worlds, and now his hair is gray and his face creased, his once machine-toned muscles sagging on his skeleton. He wears an immaculate grey suit, embroided with the Kyoto Planetary Development Company logo. He is always shaven and his hair combed, attempting to radiate as much confidence as he can, given the situation Aiko is in. Any past history you want included: To Howell, Kyoto was a punishment. He was originally sent to replace a younger, up-and-coming corporate executive who oversaw Kyoto's foundation, and was thereafter removed to a more significant position in the company artillery. Howell, on the other hand, had just caused a minor PR disaster on one of the Inner Worlds, when a team of tabloid snoopers managed to get into his lessthan-perfectly secured private files, thus gaining access to some very sensitive data. He was sent to administrate a pissant, backwater hellhole smack in the middle of galactic nowhere, and while the subsequent years (he has been on Kyoto for more than 15 years now) have made him accept the position, if not revel in it, he has never loved Kyoto and Kyoto has never loved him. The same goes for it's citizens. Preferences for your ship: He has a standard-issue company roamer. While it is a rugged little vehicle, designed for the Fringe, it's offensive capability is neglectable.

Lovely Character, Axioma. Very nicely done backstory.
I will accept co-authors. I'm not the fastest writer.
I am however, pretty good at battle scenes.. *grin*

While I have to admit I haven't been the most prolific of authors, I don't think I've ever actually written a battlescene. You can have 'em.

I'm fairly good at plot and somewhat good at details. I'm better as a second-opinion and sounding board, though. But count me in.

Ooh, Character Propositions? Sweet.
Full name: David Archer Callsign/nickname: Bowman Age: 17 Gender: Male Occupation: Courier Basic description of character: His clothing is accured by happenstance, new garments bought whenever he needs them. As a result, his gaudy clothing bought with little regard for anything other than warmth, comfort and pockets resembles Colin Baker era Doctor Who: Gaudy, tacky, and incredibly colourful. His features are striking, but not memorable. The nose and eyes and mouth are deeply average. His eyes are most often a hazel in colour, rarely obscured by his orderly brown hair. He is of medium build and possessed of a head slightly disproportionate to his body. His normally colourful clothing is ripped, torn, and often stained with mud or food. Slung around his body is a bandolier containing data cards and disks, various forms of information storage, as well as a few small trade goods and fake jewlery. Around the other side is slung a worn satchel full of god knows what. Any past history you want included: David is, and has always been, a deeply shifty character. Although he makes his living as a courier, ferrying information and small cargo between individuals, cities, worlds, whoever needs it moved, He pays for passage by fooling the gullible and the avaricious with small time confidence games. The Spanish Prisoner, Pidgeon Drop, Find the Lady, The Engagement Ring, anything that pays for his passage as he carries his previous information and messages from place to place.

Oooh, this sounds nifty.
Full name: Pulaika Anne Cogsmith Nickname: Sparky (only among close friends/trusted customers) Age: 27 Gender: female Occupation: Engineer, mechanic, and occasional fence for weapons or ship parts.
Basic description of character: Pulaika is small and thin, which combined with her large-eyed, impish face and abundance of freckles makes her look a lot younger than she really is (with effort, she can pass for a preteen). Her wavy hair is light brown and usually kept braided. She has brown eyes. A chip from her right front tooth is missing; she lost it in a training accident when she was younger and never bothered getting it fixed. A tattoo depicting a many-toothed cog surrounding her initials is inked on one shoulder.
She dresses cheaply and simply, much of her clothes taken from the equivalent of Army surplus or thrift shops; she tends to favor sleeveless tops, roomy pants with lots of loops and pockets for tools, heavy work gloves, and steel-toed boots. Pulaika's tools, however, are top-of-the-line, regularly repaired or replaced, and frequently have custom paint jobs (her welder's masks in particular are decorated with practically kabukiesque patterns). She doesn't own much in the way of severe weather gear since she rarely heads beyond a five-mile radius of her shop.
Pulaika is neither abrasive nor precocious. She often speaks in a near-monotone; while she is hardly emotionless, it's very hard to make her laugh or smile. She has found her poker face to be extremely useful when dealing with haggling clients or authorities investigating things she's fenced. Pulaika has absolutely no qualms about dabbling in illegal activities as long as she gets paid. Her favorite food is fish and her favorite color is green.
Any past history you want included: "Sparky" has lived a relatively calm life--she's never even been off-world, though this is hardly guaranteed to last--repairing and designing equipment for the various farmers, pilots, and laborers nearby. She has a passing interest in shipwrighting but has never acted on it. Pulaika first began to deal in stolen or otherwise illegal goods at the age of fifteen. She inherited the shop from her father when he retired; both of her parents are in good health and write her letters from time to time. The same accident that damaged her tooth has left her deathly afraid of being pinned under falling equipment, and because of this every piece of machinery in her shop--whether her own or in for repairs--is triple-secured before she handles it. She is still a bit bitter over the loss of her most recent lover to pirates, but so far has not let this affect her business.
Preferences for your ship: Aside from a small cargo vehicle she sometimes uses for deliveries, Pulaika has to rely on others for transportation.

Character Sheet Kyraa authorized me to post hers
Full name: Arienne Danielle
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Occupation: Free Trader
Basic description of character: Roughly 5'9", slender, long red hair (usually in a braid or ponytail, often simply down), green eyes. Generally wears tank tops, pants, skintight sleeveless bodysuits with tasteful cleavage. Generally wears dark colors (blues, greens, black). Tall boots with a knife hidden in the right one. Combination utility/gunbelt. Small plasma burn scar on the left shoulder.
Personality: Fairly standoffish. Sarcastic; sometimes caustically so. However, she is immensely loyal to those who work their way past her defenses. She therefore has few friends, but would do anything for them.
Arienne tends to have spacer's smarts; she is very knowledgeable about starports and spaceships. She can make emergency repairs in the heat of battle, she's a good shot with a blaster, and can fly just about anything with an ion engine.
Full name: Celeste Danielle
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Occupation: Free Trader
Basic description of character: Roughly 5'9", slender, long red hair (usually up or in an elaborate braid), green eyes. Generally wears lighter colors. Tends to favor loose, flowing clothing. Skirts, pants, blouses, etc. Obsessive about matching. Keeps a purse which carries - amongst normal accessories - a small pocketknife her sister Arienne convinced her to keep with her, and a set of discs.
Personality: Bubbly. Child-like innocence. Doesn't like fighting, but can defend herself well if need be. Timid, but friendly. Makes friends easily.
Celeste is very intelligent; she can easily retain information she only heard once. She knows her way around any computer system made within the last hundred years.
Arienne and Celeste compliment each other fairly well.
Brief History: The sisters have been traveling around the galaxy since they were born. Their parents owned a freighter they won in a contest; it has been heavily modified since then, perpetuating the saying "There is no such thing as a 'stock' light freighter".
Their parents died of a rare blood disease when the girls were nineteen; they have been travelling alone since then. They tend to drift into a port, take on a "No questions asked" shipping or passenger job (which gets them into slight trouble at times) and move on. They have no home planet, only the Wisp.
After a recent altercation with some pirates in the Akran Nebula, the Wisp was left adrift for a few days. Arienne made some repairs and got the hyperdrive engine working again, while Celeste did some scanning of the region. She recieved a distress call from the Aiko Agricultural Colony in the Kyoto System, which happened to be a short darkspace jump away. They made the jump, and arrived in the outer system...
Preferences for your ship: Light Freighter, the Darkite Wisp. Arienne pilots, while Celeste navigates. They each have control over the plasma cannons and torpedo launchers, which can be used from the cockpit or operated manually from the gunwales located starboard and port.
